I just downloaded the demo because of all you guys with the game in your sigs and holy crap this game is amazing. The art is beautiful and the gameplay is actually original and fun. I am definitely picking this up when it comes out.

Chance's incessant shilling of this game on every fucking thread led me here and all your whole-hearted recommendations have convinced me to buy an Ethernet cable to finally get my PS3 online. Now, where do I get the demo?

Score one for incessant shilling! Great review, thanks for the linkage :^:
Make no mistake, Valkyria Chronicles is a really, really, really good tactical RPG, and fans of the genre should pick it up without delay, but beneath the inviting exterior and thoughtfully designed battle system lies a game with a few too many clunky inconsistencies which directly impact the strategic heart of the experience.
Reading the review, they really liked the game a lot but had to knock it a couple of points because of AI, cover system, and explosion inconsistencies. I realize the quote above sounds kind of negative, but read the review, its pretty positive.
I also like how the game has an OPTIONAL install, and that supposedly the load times are still pretty good even if you don't do the install. (I will install. I didn't buy a 320gb drive for my ps3 for nothing.)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
PSN Store -> all demos/games -> alphabetical, or something along those lines. It might still be under 'New Releases' on the US one if you scroll down.
The PSN Store is really simple to navigate, it should be easy to find it.
I made a UK account and only found a VC trailer when I looked for it under V, which is kinda why I asked. Upon further investigation, however, I found the demo under 'Latest' so all's good.

I'm not too surprised. The odd rules of sandbags giving even standing soldiers a form of near-invincibility from explosive attacks is weird, and reminds you "oh right, tactics game" instead of keeping you immersed. Really, the complaints are similar to what what's-his-face mentioned earlier in the thread about why he didn't like the game.
Arguably, you should be able to lob a grenade behind a sandbag wall, even though you're in front of it, and blow up the guy behind it. If the radiator of a tank is "weak," a direct tank round to the rear should blow it up. When things don't work in a logical sense, it reminds you "oh right, there's numbers behind the scenes." Which is a good reason to knock a few points off a score.
I haven't really read anything in the reviews that you can't glean from the demo, which is nice.

My shameless whoring has infected yet another heathen!
Soon, the Valkyria believers shall count in the hundreds! I know that's shooting a little high, but the game deserves the attention! Muahahahahahahahah.

I other news, IGN UK gives Valky a 91! The Sixth Axis tosses it an 80, and there's a rumor that Edge Magazine UK gave it a fucking six, but I haven't been able to find any official confirmation of that.

So, played the demo. Really fun. Solves two of the biggest issues I have with turn based strategy.
A: Getting raped by that one unit who has 1/100 of health left getting a full turn and obliterating you (Counter fire during enemy move turns is a GOD send if you have your units dug in).
B: Accurately hitting the enemy without percentages or stupid timing minigames. If you have a percentage based game, you will ALWAYS miss that critical 80% hit shot while your enemy will ALWAYS make that clutch 20% hit shot in my experience.

October's issue didn't have it (though it did have a 10/10 LBP review) and the next issue doesn't come out for another couple of weeks, so it sounds like bullshit.
Here's the reviews I know of:
OPM: 4.5 (out of 5)
OPM UK: 8 (out of 10)
IGN: 9 (out of 10)
IGN AU: 9.1 (out of 10)
RPGFan: 88 (out of 100)
Gameplayer: 8.5 (out of 10)
Evilgamerz (Dutch website): 9.5 (out of 10)
JeuxVideo: 18 (out of 20)
Eurogamer: 8 (out of 10)
Anyway, I just found out that Hitoshi Sakimoto (FFT, FFXII, Vagrant Story) composed the soundtrack. Oh man, this just makes me even more excited. Looks like LittleBigPlanet's going to be sitting on the shelf until I finish Valkyria...

Random accuracy still happens in the game, hence the cone of fire with most rifles. If you get unlucky with the RNG it may all hit wide of the target unless they weight the shot to the center or something. I know the sniper gun seemed fairly inaccurate even crouched using maximum zoom to aim -- aiming for the headshot doesn't seem worth it with such a high chance of missing wide even from nominal distance.
What was most silly to me though was how little damage the MG on the tank does to infantry. I drove the tank up like 10ft away from a guy and rip into him with the MG and the burst is like half a second and did like 1/4 of his life. The turn before that I had fired a mortar round on top of a guy and also did little damage. Running them over doesn't seem to have much effect either lol...
Hang on, this is out today in Europe?
But what about Fallout and LBP next week and, and... all the other stuff?
Fuck you, game publishers, I don't have the time or money for this shit!

The tank MG shreds things for me, except lancers (they're really heavily armored)
Running people over does nothing, they just dive out of the way. Yeah, I think everyone TRIED it
I agree that the sniper rifle was dicey at any respectable sniping range. Hopefully it's a level/shitty gun thing.
I haven't played this game yet, so what would you guys compare it to? Conflict? Advance Wars? Shining force? Final fantasy tactics?
I personally got a Final Fantasy Tactics vibe from it, but i've played so little games in the genre, its probably not an accurate observation.
I'm off to buy this in half an hour. 8-)8-)
It borrows from a lot of different SRPG conventions. The res your fallen allies in three rounds or they die reminds me of FFT (and others). The non-grid movement is like Phantom Brave (and Makai Wars I think). I like that the camera is down behind your characters.
Just got my copy. You really wouldn't know it was released here, unless you went hunting for it. My game store had two copies, and they were under the bloody desk.

Ugh. So, I'm totally going to pick this up next week. But between Fallout 3, LBP and L4D, I'm not sure I'm going to have much time playing it till next at least December.
A demo for Valkyria Chronicles hit the PSN, and I wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't been madly refreshing for the Mirror's Edge demo. I'm really afraid this game is going to fall through the cracks, even though it's almost the only game of its type on the Playstation 3 - a smart, tight take on tactics with a striking watercolor aesthetic that it nothing short of triumphant. Must, must, must buy.
I would like to congratulate the continual shilling for this game by certain forums members - usually I find it annoying, but for once it made me pick up a game I probably would've missed in this busy release season.

Wooo! That's like, ten million times the amount of attention I could ever hope to shine on this game. Thank you Tycho!

Interesting. There's no way in hell I can play this now. But in a few months we'll see.

But dammit Sega, why releas eit now of all times? I'm nearly broke with gaming purchases as is!

This. All of it. I played the demo last night and I badly want to get it, but... the monies... they are gone.

It helps that there isn't much in the Store.
Best be a 6 out of 5.

The art and music are friggin gorgeous too.
So, it's on the Christmas list. 8-)
Edge has had some odd scores lately, they gave saints row 2 a 5/10.
Its not like they never give high scores either, other games that month were rated 8's and 9's.

Someone earlier said something to the effect of Full Spectrum Warrior-lite gone Japanese. I would say that this is a fairly accurate assumption.
Only cos the game follows the general Japanese-game convention that female warriors wear skirts :P
Doesn't it apply everywhere?

This pre-order "artbook" isn't quite what I expected, but isn't bad. It's a nice primer for the game's setting and story.
Good to know!
