Man, I don't know about you, but I am totally recruiting the first chance I get, no matter what her potentials are. Hot.
Fraudia York, if you want the name.
Looking good with the reviews. I have to say I expected it to be totally average, but that's only because of my pessimistic outlook on games. It's nice to be pleasantly surprised. I hope this helps the game's publicity, since it really needs as much attention as it can get.
Slightly irked about that comment in the RPG Land review, where he said that overwatch firing was a new thing in tactical RPGs, when it was in X-COM, Jagged Alliance, Close Combat, etc, a decade or more earlier, but it ain't a biggie. Here I am rattling off about stupid Western tactical RPGs again. Ignore me. What's important is that the game got some nice reviews and hopefully, some public attention.
Well, I guess they are technically correct since all the games you listed are considered Turn Based Strategy, not Strategy RPGs. A small distinction, but one that makes their statement accurate nonetheless
A fair assessment, but the line between them is rather sketchy anyway. X-COM has units that gain rank and get better as they participate in combat, but in a decidedly less detailed manner than what Disgaea does. Does this make X-COM a tactical RPG or just a turn-based strategy game? I don't know. To be honest, I just like to call them either real-time strategy or turn-based strategy, for less confusion.
Regardless, overwatch firing has been done before in turn-based strategy games. That's all I was trying to say.
I imagine that's also how I'll decide who to bring to battle.
I don't know if that's internet sarcasm, Chrono - but this is not: I will totally field a full squad of super-hot anime-style gun-babes (unless there's a compelling tactical reason not to do so).
'Course if it turns out (which is likely) that I'll need to mix-and-match, for example, to get three soldiers shooting as one, well... another time. But for now the dream lives!

No, not you Chrono. No, not you Haikira, Darksteel or Pook. No, not you Carbon.
You, you PS3 owner lamenting the lack of RPGs on the system! Why aren't you reading this thread? Why haven't you tried the demo and gotten you friends to try the demo?
Why aren't you singing from the rooftops that, 2 years after launch, you're finally getting the RPG you deserve? What happened to you, man? You used to be cool. Now you're just playing first person shooters and trying to choose between Resistance 2 and Legendary.
There's another path, man. Come, walk with me. Let's deploy an intricately chosen squad of stylin', personality-infused manga character designs in a turn-based RPG with bogglingly gorgeous art direction and brain-teasing, tactical gameplay.
It's okay, it's okay. Not everything has to be action-packed. Not everything needs procedural animation and realistic gore physics.
Try it, you bastards!

Ugh, yeah. I am such a weeaboo faggot for this art style. This and that Naruto game are fucking beautiful on PS3. Almost makes me want a second PS3 (since mine is permanently used by my parents as a netflix DVD/BR player).
I played the demo and while it was quite fun, this game really doesn't seem right on a PS3. Everything just screams "handheld" to me. Advance Wars was the perfect game to play on the DS, and I really think they should have made this a PSP/DS title instead. Looking at the graphics, it wouldn't have been too hard either!
I can't see myself sitting in front of a big screen to play a turn based game like this. It's a shame really.
So stoked. This just quenches my thirst for a different kind of RPG. I even resorted to playing through the first few Dragon Warrior games just to play something that was "Different". Sounds like this one is going to deliver.
Hey, so I am playing Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway right now. Not exactly the same genre, but it's a tactical game so hey. And they share the WWII theme. Hell's Highway is in Holland, Valkyria Chronicles is in Fantasy Holland.
What I'm really surprised with is that the graphic design for this game is really good. It's not super brown or anything. It's nice and sunny and colorful. I was stricken with the similarity of the look to Valkyria Chronicles. It's bright, has a varied color palette, and has windmills!
The game makes me hope there will be some sort of reference to Operation Market Garden in Valkyria Chronicles.
edit: haha I forgot I have a Valkyria sig. Fanboy points +50 for this response.
Well you have to admit, having cel-shaded style graphics are easier to pull off on a low spec system than gritty realistic graphics. Textures can be much lower resolution. Model complexity is not a big deal on a handheld screen, since the viewing area is smaller you can lower the polycount significantly without impacting the game experience much.
That's what I was referring to :P
Also I do agree that stylistic games are far better than gritty realistic ones - biggest example for me was when Unreal Tournament 3 came out. I had been waiting for that game for years, and built a brand new PC just for it... ended up playing it for a few days and then never touched it. Team Fortress 2 on the other hand I played for months and months.
How is the multiplayer for this game? Does it feature any kind of hot-seat mode for play on a single console? I'd rather play a slow paced strategy game against someone I'm sitting next to, than online.
Holy shit, did you see that weapon Rosie was using? Range, accuracy, and damage through the fucking roof.
Yeah Rosie and Selvaria both used it, and I think I saw like a super-rifle in there. The only thing that makes me wary about this DLC (which hasn't even been announced for NA/PAL yet) is the fact that all the Empire soldiers look identical. A bunch of dudes with heavy armor and no face - how do you imbue them with personality?
Body language, that's how!

Think of your family, dude! How can they be happy if you're sad about not having Valkyria Chronicles? Think of the song, man!
:whistle:Have yourself a merry little Christmas...
It's obvious, if you read between the lines, Bing Crosby is telling you to buy this game from beyond the grave.
Had I not already paid this game off, I would be compelled to by your perfectly tuned arguments. Honestly, it's science, and who argues with science when combined with Bing Crosby, Christmas, and teams of hot soldiers fighting in Holland? Nobody, that's who.

By giving them personality, if you know what I mean.
For anyone who still hasn't tried the demo(because you don't have Qore or a Euro account), according to the Playstation Blog it hits the normal PSN Store today.

Yep, it's up now. So if you're one of these funny people who were too damn lazy to make yourselves a Euro account to try out what may turn out to be the best JRPG this year, hop onto the Playstation Store!

Should probably change the Thread Title to make sure everyone knows you don't have to jump through any "lolsony" hoops to try the demo anymore.
Damn you bastards. I fully had my holiday game purchases planned out and then I see this thread and the sigs, so I decide to look more. Yeah... I'm going to have to get this game. I made a UK account just to download the demo, so unless that turns out to be balls, I'm gonna have to scrounge up $60 some time soon for this.

At least Sony didn’t wait until a month after the game was released to put up the demo.

While multiplayer would be cool and I’m sure lots of people would have fun with it, it\'s not something I’d ever player because I know I’d get destroyed and that’s no fun!
Ha, I told y'all that they'd put it up outside of Qore. I'll download this tonight.
Yeah, we all expected it would go wide release eventually. It was retarded to put a demo for a game like this in Qore, rather than something like the Resistance 2 Beta which already had significant hype.

Glee and glory! What do you think of that, Doctor McNinja?
Well said.
And add me to the list of people that are going to field a squad of hotties.
