So i went on vacation and brought my router. 2 PCs connected to the router, connected to the cable modem...pretty standard stuff.
I initially: ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew
Instantly got a new IP address and both PCs were able to access internet. 5 minutes later, we lose connection (not physically), but our internets just like...dies.
Im sure this is a common problem, but does anyone know? (PS: unplugging router power, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging back in results in temporary internet to both PC without doing anything special)
ISP: Charter
Router: Linksys 2.4 GHz (Wireless-G as well)
standard 192.168.1.xxx (one PC is 100, and mine is 107)
NIC's set to Obtain automatically on IP And DNS
youre going to have to walk me through any router configurations. All my life ive been a pretty cut and dry guy when it comes to routers. Maybe ive just had the best luck, but all ive ever need to do is plug my PC into the router and im done. This is new to me.
old school memory FTW! i typed "192.168.1.1" in my i-net browser, and guessed the username and password (this router isnt even mine).
DHCP Server: Enable
Starting IP Address: 192.168.1.100
Maximum Number of DHCP Users: 50
Client Lease Time: 0 minutes (0 means one day)
Static DNS 1: 0.0.0.0
Static DNS 2: 0.0.0.0
Static DNS 3: 0.0.0.0
WINS: 0.0.0.0
upon further investigations, i find that DMZ is "disabled"
ever since i went into the router configurations, i havent dropped yet....
I will run the repair next time it happens. My dad suggests to call the cable company because it seems to be a problem stemming from the modem, and not the router. Agree? Disagree? (ps: thanks for helping me so far.)
I actually do agree with your dad. Its just good to look at everything on your end first before going through the hassleof calling them. Now here is a question
Has it been raining a lot since the problem started?
the problem started about an hour ago.... i made this thread right when it happened. I *just* set up this .."network" for lack of better words. But no, it hasnt rained.
As far as I can see from what you've posted your router looks alright. Now when I first moved into my new apartment I was having the same problem you are having and it ended up being bad shielding on the cable coming in from the box outside. If your problem has cleared up it might just have been a hiccup in your service which happens from time to time (especially from Charter) and sometimes a new router can hiccup now and again. If it keeps happening call the cable company and make them come out and check your line.

Also, are you using DMZ or any port forwarding?

192.168.1.1 and a name/pass box will pop up. your name and password should be admin/admin.
Then look for a tab for setup or settings or configuration and take a screen shot.

This can be locked now unless some miracle worker posts about this problem.
Its a Wireless Router - so MAKE SURE you have the security turned ON.
The fact that there are 6 Ip's between your two computers is bothersome.
