OK here's the problem:
I recently installed Gears of War PC version and was looking to host a co-op game. Problem is, it won't let me, it keeps telling me my firewall settings won't allow it (I can
join a game just fine). I haven't had this problem before. Gears of War is fully updated as far as I'm aware (I think there's been another patch since I last played it).
Now I've got two firewalls here, first is the one on my Router (BT Homehub) the other is Windows Vista firewall. Both are running.
Now I've forwarded the ports to Live in my hub (ports 88 and 3047, TCP and UDP), and done the same in the windows firewall. This didn't work.
When I disable the firewall on my hub, doesn't change anything, the game still won't allow me to host. However, when I disable my
Vista firewall, the game will allow me to host for some reason. So I'm guessing that's where the problem lies.
I don't understand why this is the case. In the exceptions tab for my firewall, Gears of War is listed there, and it's ticked. Just to make doubly sure I made separate entries for the ports 88 and 3047 and have those 'exceptions' ticked as well. Still doesn't do anything when the firewall is active.
So am I just forwarding the wrong ports? Is Gears
PC version making use of different ports to the Xbox version (those ports are actually to access "Live", not Gears specifically. I don't know whether there are separate ports for PC users but I haven't found any mention of them so far), and even if that's the case, why is it listed in my exceptions and still not going through?
Is it actually safe for me to leave my Vista firewall off and just make use of my hardware firewall in the router? From what I understand hardware firewalls are always the safest option, but I just want confirmation on that. Who knows, maybe I didn't even have the Vista firewall running the first time, and that's why it worked without me realising it. For preferance though, I'd prefer to be able to port forward this game through my Vista firewall if at all possible. Maybe I shouldn't be running a hardware firewall in conjunction with a software firewall in the first place?
So, any help?
