Guys I have a friend who has enjoyed every 3D Sonic game except Sonic Rush, finds the old 2D Sonic games inferior, enjoyed both Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, found Shadow the Hedgehog's plot good, thinks Sonic meshes well with realistic humans like Elise, and thinks Shadow's cool.

While he is a massive problem, he doesn't warrant nuking.

He says he's going to email me a bunch of Sonic x Elise photos.
Well, probably not romantic ones, but still. The price I pay for bringing up the topic.
Also this game has also gotten me slightly excited for a Sonic game again. I loved the 2D Sonics of old. And as much as I hated every 3D Sonic thing except for the Sonic/Shadow segments in Sonic Adventure 2 (including Sonic and the Secret Rings, that game... wasn't too good), this looks like it could be interesting.
Of course, I'm sure Sega will find some way to screw it up, but I'll keep my eye on it.
So, from watching this video, it looks like this is almost positively Sonic Rush 3D. Awesome.
I've never played the original, but I would strongly urge anyone to play Sonic Rush Adventure (I would also strongly urge them to skip all the cut scenes). It's true, there are very many "hold forward" moments, but interspersed are some actually marginally difficult and fun sections. I would be very happy if that was the sort of game we get.

Okay. The Genesis Sonics (Excluding 3D Blast, but including Spinball) were pretty much, the best non-mario 2D platformers of that generation. Sonic 3 + Knuckles is probably my favorite single player 16bit game. Hands down.
Sonic Adventure was okay. Sonic Adventure 2 was better. Sonic Heroes had some REALLY good ideas, but was so glitch-ridden/buggy that it was damn near unplayable. Sonic 2006 I never played, but I'm curious, what made it so bad? Shadow The Hedgehog was outright unplayable due to it's controls. Like, I seriously just couldn't get the game to like, work. Secret Rings started out great, but eventually felt pretty buggy, and mission objectives almost NEVER seemed clear to me. I still have it, and I still intend to eventually like, finish it.
As far as I am concerned Sonic begins and ends with Sonic 3+Knuckles.
Sonic 1 and 2 are also classics. There were also some other great sonic games near to those, sonic 3d etc, but everything from sonic adventure onwards has been utter garbage.
sonic is not an on rails roller coaster speed game.
also, whos fucking genius idea was it to expand the cast of characters to like eight times the original cast. god.
I agree with everything in this post
Also the new game looks like a great return to form.
Holy shit @ The Load Times Video
and I guess like, okay, if you take any of the second video sexually, gross. The whole Sonic and Humans interacting thing has never really bothered me though, cause it happened a lot in the comics, which I loved as a kid.
I keep wanting to go buy all the 3D Sonic games and beat them, so I can form a better educated opinion as I've only played to completion Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 out of the 3D games, but when I tried to play Heroes, I kept falling through the ground, which was, frustrating, to say the least.
If anything it's the opposite, the old Sonic games were constantly stopping your momentum with unseen obstacles and unfair deaths, penalizing you for going fast unless you've memorized the level. Leave the fancy platforming to Mario, Sonic games should be about speed.
Salmoned for the opposite of truth.
The complexity of the old Sonic games is what makes them good. They make being able to blaze through a level a sign of skill rather than the game being designed around holding down the D-Pad.
That's why it's so much fun to do speedruns through levels like Labyrinth Zone and Star Light Zone - because you have to figure out the "best" ways of getting through the levels, dealing with enemies (sometimes using them to maintain your momentum), obstacles (like those see-saw things you drop weights on), etc. Speed in old Sonic games is something you earn, not something that the game locks you into. The former is awesome and what Sonic is about; the latter is boring bullshit and based only on a very superficial (and wrong) understanding of what Sonic games are.
The screenshots and video look pretty cool so far (I definitely like the Sonic model; much improved from the horrors of Sonic '06), but I'm withholding judgment. The video made it seem a bit too much like the game is simply guiding you while you hold right and run really fast, but those might just be limited segments that they decided to showcase because they look cool (which they do). Sonic 3 had segments like that, after all, but they weren't indicative of how the game as a whole played.

What makes Sonic so much fun to play is because there is skill involve in the game. You have potential to go fast, after you take the time to memorize the stages. Remember the first time you play Sonic 1, stage 2 (emerald whatever zone)? It used to take me forever to get through that stage with all those tricky jumps and everything. But after awhile I was jumping across that stage like the real Sonic the Hedgehog would. The same can be said for any stage, once you figure out the best route you're the ultimate cock, the fastest mother fucker around, and there's nothing to stop you (except for that jump you mistime by a tenth of a second).

Is it possible that Sega has finally realized that we want a real Sonic game? That video might have restored all the collected hopes of Sonic regaining his roots.
Man I actually liked the route they were taking with Sonic and TSRs. I mean, yeah, that game had a lot of fucking problems and poor design choices, but playing through the levels (not silly extra missions) after you got some good upgrades was really enjoyable.
As for old Sonic 2D games, I don't remember really ever going fast unless I knew the level, otherwise it was hidden spring in the face.

People also seem to forget that Sonic's main villain, from the very first game, is a human.

Yeah, but they never show Robotnik and Sonic being all romantic-like.

Well, not in game. I'm sure Rule 34 is in full effect here.
As long as the friends are ONLY Tails and Knuckles, and they have very similar levels (If not the same) to Sonic's. . .the game still has hope. Amy and Shadow. . .maybe (As, unlike most people, I don't mind Amy and I tolerate Shadow). But, if we see anymore, the game floats off my radar.
Except for the RPG. I'm giving that a chance regardless of friends.

Two good Sonic games at the same time.
Someone check the Bible. I think that might be in Revelations.
It's a 360/PS3 game too.

I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

This actually looks like its trying to be like rush and secret rings not heroes 2.
I never asked for this!
