If anything, I would half expect an RPG to have to introduce new characters. You can't just have the story be just Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles vs Eggman and that's it. You'd have to have something like a new villain or something. Like what Super Mario RPG did to cite an example. Plus, it's an RPG. I'm not going to balk half as much as selecting Attack for a random anamorphic animal vs playing through a stage as ANOTHER hedgehog that isn't Sonic.
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
get out of the character crap people... watch the video again... something
you realize the the Bioware Sonic RPG is gonna have new characters (its a freakin rpg!) and some of them might not be "perfect character incarnate #37", they might be, like a normal NPC
People need to like good games. Yes I know 2D Sonic was good, yeah you grew up with it, well I grew up with SA 1 & 2 which are also good, so deal with it. I have never seen what amounts to pure nostalgia be so goddamn blinding.
Me neither.
I mean, yes, the SA games are decent. the Speed levels can be downright good, a few annoying cameras and glitches aside. They're bogged down by obnoxious treasure hunting, shooting, and fishing, however, and in the case of SA2, a plot far more broody and melodramatic than you could honestly hope for goofy cartoon animals to execute properly.
I could say more but I'm just going to assume that TSR is going to end up saying what I want to say far more articulately than I could hope to say it.
The speed levels in SA2 were alright. But it was just one path, and God help you if you wanted to rebel against the tyrannical camera. You will go forward, and you will do it with a smile on your face.
The shooter levels were actually kinda breezy fun in an arcade fashion. A bit too long and too much platforming, however.
Treasure Hunting is like being forced to poison kittens. Terrible music, no real need for speed but its there anyways! And Rouge is a fucking terrible character. The fact they made one of these levels timed was like switching the poison to explosive kitten food.

I have not been able to play the Green Hill Zone remake due to those god forsaken treasure hunt levels. Because basing your rank on time when you have to dig in the dirt on massive levels for randomly placed objects it an excellent idea.
Yeah, I checked it out as well. I was never really much for the Sonic games (Never owned a genesis) but that looks pretty bitching. I may have to pick that up when it comes out.
A were-hedgehog isn't an any more retarded plot device than Sonic traveling through time to fight an evil robot doppelganger of himself (now, as a gameplay mechanic, that's a whole other issue). But it didn't matter in Sonic CD because story wasn't shoved down your throat, and it lately has been in Sonic games. If I can press a button to skip cutscenes, it'll cease to be an issue. I'm just hoping it doesn't throw off the game's pace too bad.
The gameplay video basically looks like a next-gen Sonic Rush with Secret Rings bits thrown in (pretty seamlessly, too). It's promising, but Rush wasn't much at all like the older 2D Sonic games (intuitive sense of momentum was replaced with virgin's vagina-tight controls to help you cope with all the shit that you flew into from off-screen--or didn't, like floors). Show me some less linear platforming and I'll get more excited about the revival of old-school Sonic (now, if the were-Sonic is an excuse to slow down the game for the express reason of including precise platforming, then everybody wins).
Edit: I just watched it again and noticed that when he takes the jump off that ramp at 0:34, there's another ledge he could've landed on below the one that receives him. High-/low-roads confirmed? NOW I'm fucking optimistic.

I have heard of TSR killing people for saying stuff like this.
This might not be the case either. Like TSR said, there are clearly several alternate paths you can take. It might be my mind playing tricks on me because I really want to see this, but in the fly-by of the tree video you can see a section of platforms going up like you would in the older games to get onto one of the alternate paths.
But I might just be really, really hoping this game is good because I want a really good sonic game ._.
Multiplatform release. Wii, 360, PS3. Screenshots are from the 360/PS3 version.
this gets me hopeful for the wii version (which is the only current gen console I own...though I might have a 360 by the time this game comes out...)
I feel the one thing that limits the wii the most is whenever its a ps2 port. When that's the case, of course its going to look like a shitty last gen effort.
So is it odd that when I read about all this on Kotaku this morning the first thing I thought was "Wonder what TSR has to say?" And thanks for reminding me about the Bioware game, I somehow forgot about it .
I'd be more excited for this if both Sonic Rivals games hadn't demonstrated that 2.5D Sonic is still very, very easy to fuck up. It could be good, of course, but this isn't the first polygonal sidescrolling Sonic game and the previous ones have blown pretty hard.

Well, to be fair, Sonic Rivals was made by some group of chucklefucks and this one is coming from Sonic Te---
Yeah, that point might be valid if Sonic Rivals sucked.
But it didn't - it was fucking awesome. Especially Sonic Rivals 2.
They were the clumsiest 2D Sonics by far, excluding some of the later Game Gear entries. All the wonderful physics and momentum based gameplay that makes the 2D entries so great was missing, and the level design was pretty dire.

Bullshit. They replicated the physics of the old games pretty well, and the level design was actually a step above Sonic Rush's. Especially Sonic Rivals 2, which actually included a few classic levels.

Not to be nit-picky, but 10 years ago was when Sonic Adventure came out. December, 1998.
Still within 10 years, though.
Yes it was good when you were actually playing as Sonic
Or the snowboarding/sand-surfing.
Oh, the fond memories.

Shadow's got a gun and a car, and now Sonic's a pimp. At least they'll finally be a use for Amy.
Not all of us and get the Green Hill remake unlock and need something to comfort our inadequacy.
New title, video link, someone (TSR) post the screens they want, I'll take care of it ASAP.
Seems they are taking the idea they showed at the focus group but instead of frankenstein, they are doing a werewolf...
I'll post screens later. Just change the title to "Sonic the Hedgehog Unleashed: 2D next-gen Sonic"
Naturally.
They always wait to unload the Wii screens till after the hype, since they inevitably look like shit next to the other platforms.
I have heard of TSR killing people for saying stuff like this.
You'll notice 3/4 of the posts are "Holy Shit Awesome" and 1/4 typical "LOL Sega".
It's like 1993 all over again.

I really, REALLY want to believe this will be good. But for now, I just can't. I've been burned so many times...
BUT 2D!!
...
I'm so torn.
I am not going to let myself get too excited, however.
wait till you're a little older
