Thank fucking god. After what Sega did with that Tennis game, really, it hammered home the point that if a game has both a Wii and a PS2 port, the Wii port is going to be terrible.
I think the Sonic Rivals games (I haven't actually picked up the 2nd one yet) would have been much better if they weren't "racing" games. I have a tendency to rush through the levels and I end up dying a lot more because I'm too busy trying to get to the end before my opponent.
I really like some of the bosses though, even with the whole "beat it before your Rival thing."
Oh, and what's this about Rivals 2 containing classic levels?
Looks too much like Sonic Rush instead of moving on, but not a bad thing, all the same.
Not as excited as I am for Chronicles, but this should be fairly worthwhile.
And the best thing Sega could do right now is pull a Casino Royale and just pretend that all those new characters from, well, 1998 on never happened.
Nah. The best thing they can do is to have Sonic grab a chainsaw, walk over to Cream, Rouge, Shadow, Blaze, Big, those stupid bird things, and Silver, and cut their heads off.
going back to 1998 eliminates everyone except knuckles, tails and amy as far as "important" extra characters go
Amy is pushing it....
Amy almost predates tails.
My bad, allow me to clarify.
Amy is pushing it because, you just know that Sega will either incorporate the character as an even more crazy stalker bitch or will use the character in some sort of horrible sonic love triangle.
How come in all of the new Sonic games, it's about running as fast as you can?
Why can't we have levels like the first five (StH 1-3, Knuckles, CD) games, where platforming is just as important as dashing forward through a few shuttle loops after spin dashing into a spring?
One thing I noticed about the newer games, including the DS games, are that it's all about running as fast as you can...
For example, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, there's Mushroom Hill Zone, which would be about jumping on mushrooms, grabbing those pulley-things and tapping the down on the D-pad to go up to another part of the level, etc.
I wish they would incorporate some of that into the newer games, too.
Not to say I don't buy the newer games. Mostly because I really like Sonic, and hope that the gameplay is not all about constantly running fast.

Wow. This... this almost looks like Sega is finally LEARNING.
Cutting back on the "eXtreme"-ness (an actual word Sega once used to describe Sonic), more focused yet branching paths, etc. Very, VERY promising.
Mind you, they still have plenty of opportunities to shit this up with pointless non-speedy new characters, horrible controls, etc. But the fingers are crossed.
I'm okay with the werewolf thing as long as the transformation doesn't turn the game into a slow-ass brawler or something.
Looks nice, but the problem I have with it is this:
Yes, I understand Sonic is the fastest thing alive. I do.
I really do.
However - the beauty of say, Green Hill Zone 1, or Sandipolis Zone or Casino Night to name but a few is that they can be rushed through at breakneck speed or platformed through slowly as if Sonic were.. well, Mario.
Either can be achieved. Some, like Sandipolis with it's Ghost/Light gimmick and Death Egg with it's Gravity changes actually encourage you to move through the level a bit more slowly.
While Sonic Rush and Sonic Rivals were both great, this seems to make the same mistake as these - it's focused almost purely on speed.
And this I don't mind - I really don't - this game looks great - however, until they learn that Sonic can go fast but doesn't have to, they'll never best the Mega Drive entries.
If this has Sonic Adventure-style gameplay mixed with classic 2D gameplay control schemes I can see where it could get a little confusing at points if the transition isn't clear enough, but at the moment I'm pretty glad that something new is finally being shown without adding yet more pointless furries to the cast.
Although:
KILL IT WITH FIRE
I was hoping for yet another 2D game though, but this time with HD sprites or something. All the cool sequels are doing it! Yes, horribly impractical, but it'd be pretty cool if it did happen.
e: also the vid music was pretty cool, though I'm ok with the Crush 40 thrash rock. If I ever needed my oldskool fix I can hit up ocremix, but it's nice to see a change from the COOL COOL COOL approach that SEGA's been taking to the series.
If a quarter of the stuff posted here were in the SB Brawl thread there would be jailings front right and center.
As far as I'm aware, your report button works fine. Rather than derail the thread further into "oh man this is such a double standard why can't the brawl thread get a break" why not use it.

I have to say I'm not seeing the fuss. It's still nothing like an old school sonic game, and for a game that fast you're not really in control. What's the point in a game where all you do is tape the stick to the right and watch Sonic run?

That's pretty much my feelings. Some of the best moments in Sonic 3 for me was flying around as Tails trying to find new areas (or trying to get where I wanted to go but messed....)
Still...It is very pretty. Oh so very pretty...

We've seen what, a minute and a half video and a few screenshots. I really don't think we can say much about how the game will play from those.

Ask the people who liked the old Sonic games.
I hear those ones even had you press the jump button once in a while.

I'll let TSR explain it better but just to summarise, Sonic games (classic ones, genesis etc) were not about speed. They were complex platformers. You didnt just hold right the whole time.

I guess I just played and always interpreted them wrong, then. I certainly wouldn't call it an exploration platformer, though...the controls were so damn loose and slippery that running was the only thing that felt right.

If anything it's the opposite, the old Sonic games were constantly stopping your momentum with unseen obstacles and unfair deaths, penalizing you for going fast unless you've memorized the level. Leave the fancy platforming to Mario, Sonic games should be about speed. The hard part is doing level design that keeps it interesting without being unfair. Maybe they should add an early warning system like the Battletoads bike segment or something.
nintendo really should just go ahead and give ROB his own game, since they seem to have such a hard-on for him lately
Haha, I am just being a jerk, I grew up in the Sonic days, had both a genesis and a SNES. My favorite sonic level of all time remains Ice Cap Zone Act 2 : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lTOYI_6VA3Q
As far as I am concerned Sonic begins and ends with Sonic 3+Knuckles.
Sonic 1 and 2 are also classics. There were also some other great sonic games near to those, sonic 3d etc, but everything from sonic adventure onwards has been utter garbage.
sonic is not an on rails roller coaster speed game.
also, whos fucking genius idea was it to expand the cast of characters to like eight times the original cast. god.
Guys I have a friend who has enjoyed every 3D Sonic game except Sonic Rush, finds the old 2D Sonic games inferior, enjoyed both Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, found Shadow the Hedgehog's plot good, thinks Sonic meshes well with realistic humans like Elise, and thinks Shadow's cool.
