iPod Shuffle Trouble

CliffjumperCliffjumper Registered User regular
So it was my mum's bday yesterday, so I decide to buy her an iPod shuffle. I said I would sort out putting songs on it and that for her because she's not good with computers.

I connect it, computer recognises it, upgrade the software on it, drag and drop songs into it as normal. It syncs up fine. I disconnect it after it's fully charged, press play...

...nothing happens.

I can hear it's turned on through the headphones, but no music will play. I look at the flashing light on it's side and it changes from green to orange to green to orange again everytime I press something. Except when I hold down the play button and put it into "hold" and out of "hold".

I restored factory settings 5 times, put different songs into it, used different headphones, checked the damn thing was on, but nothing.

Any help would be appreciated, really not looking forward to the hassle of having it replaced and stuff.

    From apple:
    Error light
If iPod shuffle has an error, the front status light will blink orange and green when you press any button. If you see this, try turning off iPod shuffle, waiting a few seconds, and then turning it back on. If you still see the front status light blink orange and green, it could indicate that you have no songs on your iPod shuffle to play. Use iTunes to add songs to iPod shuffle and make sure the songs you are adding are compatible.

If you still see a blinking orange and green light, use iPod Updater 2005-02-11 or later to Restore iPod shuffle, and then use iTunes to add songs. If you still see orange and green, your iPod shuffle may need service.

Think your gonna be returning it sorry.

If this is the gen 1 gumstick style ipod shuffle, then download the ipod shuffle reset utility. I've had that happen to me a few times on my 512MB shuffle, and it fixed it every single time

If you know that the songs are on there then yeah - sounds like a return to me as well. My Shuffle only does that when it's empty.

I appreciate your help guys, and the links (I tried them out, unfortunately they didn't work). Looks like I'll have to get it replaced.

    Thanks anyway!

You make no mention of using iTunes. A shuffle doesn't work (at least the two I had) like a generic MP3 player, you can't just drag and drop files onto the drive that appears. You have to add them through iTunes so it can build the library.

Hopefully you see this before you go to the store, just in case this little nuance was the issue!

Ah yeah, sorry, I did use iTunes.

Actually would the fact that I had iTunes already installed on my laptop (the most up to date version), and it being used with another iPod already (mine, which syncs up and plays perfectly fine) have any bearing on the Shuffle's performance?

It shouldn't. I used to have an iPod and an iPod shuffle managed by the same machine.

Shouldn't be a problem - like Satan. we have 2 shuffles and a Nano all managed by the same machine. When you hook up the Shuffle does it show in iTunes that there are songs on it?

    Yeah, it does.

And everytime I drag and drop something or remove something it says it's synced up fine and that it's ok to disconnect,

Have you tried other headphones, and have you tried those headphones in another device?

Also, have you checked its set to shuffle and switched on (shut up, I know I know)?

Nah, it's cool man, I appreciate everyone's help with this.

But yeh, I checked it's set to shuffle and it's turned on and that.

    Checked the headphones too.

Looks like I'll replace it tomorrow.

Definately replace it. When the wife and I bought our shuffles last year we had one (mine) that wouldn't turn on at all - kind of like it had no connection to the battery.

Yeah, I replaced it this mornin (was easier than I thought it was gonna be). The new one works perfectly fine, which is a relief.

But yeh, thanks for your help everyone!
