Mazes of Fate DS
Mazes of Fate DS

Hundreds of years ago, the land of Akhiel was rich and beautiful under the blessing of the gods. The land was fertile and humans lived happily. But humanity took prosperity for granted, abandoned the temples and began worshiping powerful Archmages. With heavy eyes did the gods see this and their blessings were withdrawn. The land hastily became barren and misery followed...

Centuries later, in the Kingdom of Karsh, hope returned. The prophet Harlac transmitted a message of redemption from the Heavens. Harlac gathered his people to show them their mistakes. He established the Road to Redemption and was proclaimed King. The Netherlings, an evil force that lurks in the Underworld, helped by the so-called Rebellion, stopped his plans by stealing the Redemption Stone. Harlac, trying to fulfil his plan, wandered restlessly around Akhiel fighting Netherlings and Rebels. People have suffered ever since. Some have given up hope; some believe the everlasting King will succeed.

The land is in dire need of a Hero...

Command And Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath
As the expansion pack to Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, this Real-time Strategy game returns to the Tiberium universe with Kane at the center of an epic new single player campaign which allows players to experience a new story that spans 20 years – from the rebirth of the Brotherhood of Nod after the Second Tiberium War through the dramatic events of the Third Tiberium War and beyond. The story is told through a new set of high-definition live action video sequences starring a celebrity cast. Joe Kucan, the original actor who portrayed the character Kane in Command & Conquer games over the last decade, reprises his role as the megalomaniacal leader of the Brotherhood of Nod. Kane's Wrath also features a new strategic layer to gameplay that allows players to establish bases, build customized armies, and attack their enemies on a global scale – and then dive into the frenzied tactical combat where their skills as a commander makes the difference in battle. The game introduces six new sub-factions and a wealth of new units, structures, and powers to the armies of the Global Defense Initiative, the Brotherhood of Nod, and the enigmatic alien Scrin. The Xbox 360 version features a revolutionary new radial interface designed specifically for console gamers. Taking RTS controls to a whole new level, players utilize the command stick to build, deploy, and attack. [Electronic Arts]

Guild Wars Platinum Edn
Guild Wars takes the best elements of today's massively multiplayer online games and combines them with a new mission-based design that eliminates the tedium of those games. You can meet new friends in towns or outposts, form a party, and then go tackle a quest together. Your party always has its own unique copy of the quest map, so camping, kill-stealing, and long lines to complete quests are all things of the past. Within a quest you have unprecedented freedom and power to manipulate the world around you: your magic can build bridges and open up new pathways, or it can burn down forests and tear the ground asunder. You don't have to spend countless hours on a leveling treadmill to get to the interesting parts of the game, because combat is designed to be strategically interesting and challenging right from the beginning. You don't have to spend hours running around the world to prepare for a quest, because Guild Wars allows you to instantly travel to the beginning of any quest that you've previously unlocked. You'll never spend days playing only to discover that choices you made early on have left you with a permanently uncompetitive character, because the unique skill system in Guild Wars allows infinite experimentation but doesn't allow bad decisions to ruin a character. And you'll never meet new players only to discover that you can't play with them or compete against them because their characters are on a different server than yours; in Guild Wars, all characters live in one seamless world. Guild Wars Factions Pltn Edn
The stand-alone Guild Wars Factions is the second campaign in ArenaNet's massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The Factions campaign, which can be played either connected with the regular Guild Wars or as its own separate game, includes new regions (with an entire new continent), professions, skills, missions, and monsters, along with expanded options for both Cooperative and Player-versus-Player (PvP) play, and enhanced features for guilds. New content includes a number of the skills added to Guild Wars: Factions, including some of the deadly skills of the Assassin and the arcane spells of the spiritual Ritualist. Factions will also introduce a new PvP continent, Battle Isles. Battle Isles will introduce players to new PvP experiences, new and expanded arenas, new quests and a new explorable area as well. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3

Turn playable characters into more powerful ninja of unprecedented size or summon giant creatures as allies with the new Summoning mode. In addition, NARUTO fans throughout North America can experience the game in both English and original Japanese voice over. In keeping with the tradition of the series, an exclusive and original story has players exploring the massive 3D rendered Hidden Leaf Village, participating in battle royale matches and completing more than 55 missions. The experience doesn’t stop there as tons of unlockable content are available to offer loads of replay value including movies, music and cards. [Namco Bandai Games]

Universe at War: Earth Assault
Developed by Petroglyph, this combat-intensive real-time strategy game enlists players in an epic struggle to prevent total alien domination of planet Earth. Universe at War: Earth Assault is set in the near-future when multiple factions from across the galaxy have come to Earth to wage epic warfare. Containing numerous features and customization options never-before-seen in the RTS genre, Universe at War: Earth Assault creates an exceptional strategy experience for single-player and especially multiplayer battles. The game employs a unique balance system called "Tactical Dynamics" that allows players to retrain and customize units in the midst of battle to better cope with enemy forces and tactical situations. Weaponry and defenses can be modified in true real-time to take advantage of constantly shifting battlefield conditions. Players from around the world battle in persistent-style online campaigns for ultimate faction supremacy across a virtual representation of the Earth. As you can see, I'm a bit lazy this week, and I've created a section for each system, rather than just listing them all and noting which system each is released for. This actually saves me valuable web-surfing time, believe it or not.

Ninja Gaiden DS was supposed to come out last week, but DIDN'T. It BETTER come out this week like it is SUPPOSED TO.

Mother fucker.

As a side note, the Wii and PC are also getting a good chunk of shovelware this week, like MiniCopter: Adventure Flight among others, so I neglected those.

Notify my of any good releases I've missed and I'll add them to the OP.

Side note 2: Let me know if these PC games are worth anything:

Tales of Pirates

Sword of the Stars

Aggression - Reign over Europe

Australia Zoo Quest

Belief & Betrayal

Escape from Paradise City

And I'll add an entry.

Me? I'm looking forward to NINJA GAIDEN DS if it FINALLY COMES OUT... other than that, maybe Octomania, maybe Opoona, but also Crisis Core is now out! Woo!

Obscure is a maybe...

C&C3 should be good, so maybe should Harvest Moon and Viking.

AH!

Dark Sector!

That was one of the FIRST "next gen" games to be revealed, if you can all remember way back when. It was the first trailer for a game released to be for the PS3/360. Lots of hype back then.

Now that it's out.. people seem to... not give much of a crap. Because it looks 'meh.' Well, we'll see.

Sword of the Stars (PC)
Sword of the Stars Collector's Edition brings all of the Sword of the Stars universe together in one package and further expands it with special bonus materials. Well, I've been making these threads for a few weeks now. So you should know about most of these games, if by no other means, a few days in advance (on Sunday nights) by checking these threads... :P

Incidentally, Ninja Gaiden DS was supposed to come out last week, for some reason, but was pushed to this week. No idea why; but I posted it in the last week's thread.. so you'd have over a week's release notice!

Anyway, these threads are a good reminder for people that are so busy playing games or dealing with real life that they let the less-marketing/advertised games slip in under the radar.

I find that every single week since I've been doing this there have been at least 1 or 2 great games coming out that I'd like to get, or would if I had the system for it.

    No.. buy NG-DS immediately!

We must get that game good sales. So that more games of its kind are released on the DS and handhelds in general.

Rarely do we get a handheld game wherein a great developer actually puts real time and effort into it.

Outside of first party titles, that is.

    ?

    Two threads?

I'll ask the question again, since it technically refers to a game "coming out" this week (for download on XBL).

Is The Longest Journey necessary if I want to download and enjoy Dreamfall?

Octomania sounds good - it's a puzzler that's supposed to be similar somehow to Puyo Puyo, and it has local and online NWF multiplayer.

Opoona, I'm going to have to hear some feedback on that game before buying in..

There are 2 threads, one for last week and one for this week.

I'm actually glad for these threads, because they do remind me of stuff that comes out. Props as always, slash! :^:

Ninja Gaiden DS unfortunately will be relegated to "buy later" status; the only must-buys for me in the near future are Crisis Core (woo-hoo, THIS WEEK MOFOS!) and Mario Kart DS. Note that anyone who wants to buy Crisis Core, if you buy it at Circuit City this week you get a free $10 gift card.

Also, I find myself mildly interested in Dark Sector, believe it or not. The general vibe I get is a blatant Gears/RE4 ripoff, but I was listening to 1up Yours today and they seem to be pretty positive on it. I mean, it's terribly derivative, but as long as it's fun and it's a well-executed ripoff it might be worth a bargain-bin buy down the road. Hell, I bought Stranglehold. :)

The Naruto game is really, really good. I played the import to death. Probably my favorite in the series, since the next two just seemed to add characters and didn't evolve the gameplay much.
It's probably the closest one could get to Smash on the Ps2.

The new Command & Conquer expansion looks fun, but I only do single player and I'm still struggling through the original game. I had to drop the difficulty down to easy and it still took me about an hour and a half to beat Sarajevo as the GDI.

    I'll get Kane's Wrath eventually.

I'm sorta on the fence about Ninja Gaiden DS. On one hand, it's getting such rave reviews and I adore the Xbox game, but on the other I hate the anime-style changes in the character art and still doubt how such a precise, demanding game can be controlled well with the stylus. Not to mention the "real" next entry in the series is coming up this summer...eh.

Hopefully my roommate will get it and I can just borrow his copy.

I seriously doubt Ninja Gaiden DS will really control anything at all like Phourglass. But I d'no.

What I do know is that it looks like it should have the same amount of challenge, variety, and satisfying gameplay as the console Ninja Gaidens.

That alone makes the game worth it to me, regardless of the fact that it controls with a stylus - something that my mind is very open to right now, given all the positive hands-on feedback for the game.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey on XBox Originals (1200 MS points) and TiQal (800 MS) on XBLA this week. TiQal is a puzzle game that looks derivative of just about every puzzle game out there, but I'll hold judgment until trying the demo. Dreamfall is an Adventure game.

Dark Sector looks kind of interesting from the videos I've seen of late, wonder what the reviews will be like.

I added Sword of the Stars because KoolEagle mentioned it, and I checked it out--

I'm interested in both Dark Sector and Viking. Viking sort of came out of nowhere, and it looks much more complex and in-depth than I thought it was going to be.

I just think that Dark Sector is amusing because it was the very first "Next gen" game that was hyped with an "in-game" teaser. Way, way back before this generation launched. There was so much buzz about it.

And then they realized that their concept was too weak, so they implemented that tri-blade weapon to try and make it stand out amidst the glut "me too" action games on the 360/PS3.

And now that it's finally out, it comes out with a whimper, rather than a bang. I just find it so amusing for something that everyone was ogling over, that all the media sites/magazines were posting images/videos of, for so long and making a big deal out of before this generation launched.

In that time, we've had much, much better games announced, hyped, released, and gone on to sold millions, in the time between Dark Sector's initial "unveiling" and it's ultimate release.

You're right, it is really fascinating. At this point I barely remember the buzz around the time of Dark Sector's first announcement. I think I vaguely remember thinking "Yeah right the game won't actually look like that." Of course in the time since then games have gone on to look even more polished.

Also, it's completely crazy that the game looks just like all the Gears Of War Me Too Unreal Engine games, and doesn't even run on the same engine. Digital Extremes has always been a great developer and they deserve to have a huge hit, and I think the game is just a little too samey to do that for them.

I'm still really curious to see how it plays though.

Been playing Ninja Gaiden DS in moon language for a little while now - I wanted it quite badly and figured it was worth biting the bullet (do people really play NG games for the story?).

It's a hell of a lot of fun, looks good - despite not looking quite as good as all the reviews imply - sounds excellent (the soundtrack is a thing of beauty) and controls really, really well. And I got so, so tired of Phantom Hourglass... I wouldn't say the controls for PH were bad per se but they were so very, very dull, pointless and lacking in any real finesse. Ninja Gaiden DS and The World Ends With You are miles better as far as DS control schemes go.

But anyway, on the other hand - NG DS is way, way too easy (EDIT: though as the reviews mention, there is an unlockable harder difficulty I haven't yet tried), nothing like as complex as the full-blown games and extremely short. Sorry. Definitely worth a purchase, but do not go in convinced it's going to be just like the XBox/Sigma... you'll very likely be disappointed.

    Short? How short?

This is a portable game, so I don't expect any portable game to be over 4 hours in a single playthrough.

In fact, 4 hours is like, the norm for handheld games, outside of RPGs.

I'll be getting Ninja Gaiden: DS and maybe Viking pending reviews.

Also, nitpicking, Ninja Gaiden has been slated for March 25th almost since they announced it. I dunno where you got your info about it being last week, but they was wrong.

You like short, you'll probably be okay. :) I haven't finished it myself - too many games to play at once... I'm about two and a half hours in, on chapter 5 out of I don't know how many. I've read it can be clocked in five, and I doubt that's rushing it... some of the chapters have been over really quickly... literally a single simple puzzle and then straight into the boss.

I'm half and half, personally. I still love Soma Bringer, and I want to give that multiple plays as well as buy it in English, but my God is it becoming a slog sometimes. I wouldn't necessarily criticise NG for its length, just saying - if you want some lengthy epic, you're not getting it here.

It's still frequently excellent. Clearing a roomful of enemies with perfect Izuna Drops using the stylus is the kind of gaming fulfilment Phantom Hourglass never gave me and shouldn't even have attempted. I know one's far more action-oriented than the other, but NG would be a very different game without the stylus in my mind, whereas I'd barely notice the difference with PH.

Yeah they were. And thus I, and my last thread, were too.

But in my defense, keeping up with all of these releases and info gets mind boggling and I often find myself having to delete something or add something in Editing the threads as I make them, so things are inevitably bound to seep between the cracks.

This sounds like you've got battles that are nothing but deathmatch using your micro skills. Oh man, I've waited for this in an RTS for so long.

Just tried this week's XBLA game: TiQal. It's like Lumines minus the cool visuals & music but with more than 2 colors, Tetris-style blocks, and power-ups. The demo was fun, but I'm not sure that it's $10 fun.

I'm sure when I first saw Dark Sector, it was some kind of sci-fi looking trailer with a dude sneaking around on a spaceship. Then it looks like they played Painkiller for a weekened, decided that was good for a laugh, and threw the old plans out the window.

Crisis Core is made of liquid sex so far. Anyone with at least a passing interest in FF7 should definitely get this or borrow a friend's PSP to play it.

I don't know much about Opoona but it reminds me of the third-tier SNES RPG Paladin's Quest, for some reason.

Yea, they changed the setting pretty drastically about a year after that teaser trailer. They apparently made the move because they thought the 'space marine' genre was overcrowded, which I guess was true at the time. Now, aside from Aliens: Colonial Marines, I can't think of any offhand.

Well I ended up getting Dark Sector and Viking, both for PS3. They're both pretty decent games so far, and both very light on load times which is always nice.

Dark Sector plays very much like Gears plus the glaive, though I'd say the shooting combat is a hair slower and more tactical than in Epic's game. Also, sometimes things are just a little bit too shiny, but the same could be said of many games these days.

Viking is a whole lot like Fable, but with Vikings and a ridiculous amount of violence. It's more or less linear, though there are some optional sidequests and objectives which haven't been too hard to track down. I've played halfway through the first island so far, and apparently there are three islands total.

Wow, this week fucking sucks. So much in fact that I'm not wasting a new thread on it.

Next week sees some good stuff, though.

    3/30 - 4/5

    PC:

    Civil War Mysteries

    Great War Nations: The Spartans
Control the elite Spartan warriors in this Dreamcatcher strategy game.

    picture.jpg

    Overclocked
The classic point & click adventure game breaks new ground in order to tell a story revolving around psychiatrist David McNamara and five young patients. These patients are found barely clothed, the apparent victim of a traumatic act of violence, in the rain-drenched streets of New York City. McNamara is called to help as an expert psychiatrist. At the Staten Island Forensic Hospital he is tasked with treating the young patients – who all suffer from severe amnesia. Dave begins to carefully probe their memory, trying to reveal their obscured past. The story-telling approach of Overclocked sees the player take on the role of the patients as they are questioned, playing and exploring their memories one by one. In reverse chronology, the player makes his way through the shards of their past and experiences frightening events that seem incoherent at first. The insights gained can then used back in the role of Dave McNamara to piece together the interconnections between the victims and open up new lines of questioning. [Anaconda]

    Riddle of the Tomb
You are in the middle of a civil war in ancient Egypt, pitting Cleopatra's supporters against those of her brother and husband, Ptolemy, who is ravaging the country. You are a young apprentice to Akkad, Cleopatra's chief astrologist and astronomist and you fall in love with your master's daughter. You discover that both of them have been kidnapped. You learn from Cleopatra that he has a prophecy that holds the fate of Egypt. You set out on their trail through the ruins of Egypt, including such legendary sites as the Library of Alexandria and the Lighthouse, all while meeting a whole host of mysterious characters. Can you save Egypt and its Queen, too?

    PS2

    281884b.jpg

    Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis
Mana Khemia is the 5th entry in the Alchemy RPG series that began with Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. The game is a quest based, classic style RPG where players adventure on to various missions to complete the game. However, unlike the ordinary classic style RPG, alchemy is the main focus of the game. Meaning players will discover and create items, weapons, and even character stats through the use of alchemy.

    * Mana Khemia takes place at a campus setting. Players can participate in academic courses to improve your characters.
    * Battles that resemble fast paced fighting games. Combo hits can go over 100!
    * Hit the O button at crucial moments in battle for your support characters to help you.
    * No more leveling up by experience points! Power up your characters by “learning” new skills and stats of your choice.
    * Everything you find in the field is used to craft items with alchemy. You can fish, hunt, dig, and search for new ingredients. Over 400 items/ingredients available.
    * Up to 7 major characters that you can interact and simulate a high school campus life.
    * Depending on how you interact with these characters, the outcome of the game will change.
    * Over 20 main dungeons, each with hours of exploration.
    * Over 150 ways to customize your character growth.
    * Up to 34 different alchemic lectures you can attend!

    PS3:

Eye of Judgment: Biolith Rebellion (Set 2)

    XBox 360:

COD4: Game of the Year Edition

This is the first time since I've been doing this where a single week has literally had jack shit to come out.

Unless one of those PC games, or that PS2 game, is some kind of sleeper hit gem in the rough.
