What's a good media player?

Does anyone know a good alternative to iTunes? I've used it for so long I don't even know what's out there anymore. I just got a new laptop and I want to know my options before I start importing my old music.

Just something generic to play .mp3s?

    can't go wrong with Winamp.

I finally went back to Foobar. It's looking a little better than it used to and it's pretty darn lightweight.

Screenie of my setup. It's one of the defaults with 1 minor tweak I think.

Yeah I second that. Also if you are looking for something good to play almost any movie file I'd recommend VLC Media player
or my personal favorite CCCP which basically allows you to play movie files in any player of your choice, oh and it comes with Media Player Classic.

I've used winamp for many years and been very happy with it. I've been tempted to try foobar, and I think I'm going to since someone linked it again.

I tried WinAmp...hated it. Too cluttered and clunky. I'm still looking for a good media player too.

I'm a fan of musikCube. It's fast, well designed, reasonably attractive while fitting in with Windows, and also easy to use.

musikCube looks nice and in the vein of Foobar, though perhaps a little more organized in the way of the library by default.

It used to be that Foobar looked boring and terrible at the get-go and it took a lot of studying tutorial articles and downloading plugins to make it look like the epic masterpieces a lot of people have. This is no longer the case. You'll love it.

Also, there's one currently in development called Songbird. They take an interesting approach, but it's still in mid beta and it's a little slow and buggy at the moment. Podcast support also seems to be flaky atm.

Regardless, here's a little video that shows what it's about:

Note that the version shown there is an older one, and the interface has changed slightly (some buttons have moved, and the colors have changed a bit).

That does look pretty cool...the one thing that turns me off it completely is the fact that it doesn't disregard the "The" at the beginning of artist and album names when sorting. That may make me anal retentive and OCD, but I don't care. I want all my "The Beatles" in the Bs and "The Flaming Lips" in the Fs.

I think the idea is to take the good if iTunes (the views, layouts, and smart playlists) and get rid of the bad (slooooooow and huuuuuge).

Furthermore, I consider iTunes itself to be pretty damn ugly. Especially since it doesn't fit in with whatever windows theme you're using, so it looks horribly out of place to boot.
