What would be the point of a swimming mount, really? There isn't that much water to even have walrus form for druids have much of a use (unless you like exploring the coastline of the continents).
It's entirely about priorities, I think, for instance crafting doesn't interest me at all so I haven't had to sink money into that.
It's not like you need to have both those zones left to afford normal flying. They'll net you about 3-4k gold, considering the drops etc. you'll get whilst there. I think the price of normal flying is a perfectly normal ammount of cash to have to hand by the time you hit 70, unless you've prioritised other things over it in which case there's nothing to complain about as you'll have your cool item or maxed proffession or whatever.
It's interesting to analyze Blizzard's theory behind this stuff:
Let's see, someone in Outland now has probably speed-leveled to 58 and doesn't have an epic mount. It should take until about level 65 to accumulate the 600 gold for training + mount, which puts them in Nagrand, the first really large zone with lots of travel where you'd like to have the increased speed.
Then it should take until about level 69 to earn the 900 gold you need for flight training+mount, which puts you in SMV/Netherstorm, the first zones where flight travel is required to finish some quests.
RE: Those Bleeping Kaliri. My own theory here is that Blizzard has decided Skettis's bombing run was too easy without an elite mount and is trying to encourage people to head for the money sink. I know *I* don't feel any pressure to burn 5000 gold, but then my only 70 isn't a gatherer.
That's just it though, once a bird is on you, they're actually *harder* to get away from with an epic mount. They fly as fast as you do, follow you *much* further than a normal leash point, to the point where even if you went straight up, you'd hit the world ceiling, the bird would still be aggroed on you and would dismount you plummeting you to maximum death. I should know, it happened to me the first time I had my epic mount on my Rogue.
And because of the way the rendering engine works (laughably), sometimes the birds don't actually appear until they're already about to fly into you, leaving you no way of avoiding them. Seriously, this change was completely unnecessary. Though I would say that for the most part I don't have any problems doing the egg bombing, it was more when I would have to fly back and forth across the whole zone to find the escort where I would get in trouble. Now that I just skip the escort, it hasn't been nearly as much of an issue.
My first 70 was my Warlock Tailor/Enchanter, I only recently worked towards saving up enough money for an epic mount, and when I did, I gave it to my second 70, my Alchemy/Herbalism Rogue. This has been amusing to no end, and not only can I actually farm herbs (if I want to), but I'm back up to about 7.7k gold across all my characters on that server now. I'm thinking of just saving it until my 65 Prot Paladin with Mining/Engineering hits 70, enabling me to rapidly farm Ore and Motes from gas clouds, whee! Though, because of this, I'm beginning to hate doing anything with my Warlock since it takes so long to get anywhere... though my Warlock *is* closest to being able to do those new Fishing dailies, hmm... 307 fishing skill or something like that.
I'd pay whatever they want if it means I could have 2 talent specs and swap between them whenever the fuck I want.
In EQ2, they recently added a crafted item that allowed this. It was a mirror, and you could store one spec in it at any given time. So when you wanted to respec, you could just go up to your mirror and swap the profile you had stored with the one you currently were using.

We are looking ahead to Northrend, which could potentially include large stretches of open water.

I don't think that has anything to do with Blizzard's theory at all, that's just your experience, or some hypothetical players'.
edit: basicly what I'm saying is normal flying isn't hard to come by at all, infact I've barely come across anyone who wanted it enough to not spend their gold elsewhere who actually had to go out of their way levelling to make sure they had it at 70, I think speedy flying is supposed to be a luxury but even so it's easy as hell to come by.

Yeah, I think you'd have to go out of your way to not have enough for basic flying when you hit 70, the day after at the latest. Rolling on one of those new servers at TBC release, I think we had enough for epic land mounts by 61 and normal flying at 69. And those servers had no economy. On established servers it is even easier since you can make mad gold selling ore as level.
Also, /nerdrage at Spinebreaker not being up yet or on the list of delayed servers.
I don't know whether this is a bug or not, but you don't get a mark if you lose a BG... fucking ass. I don't remember reading that in the patch notes, or did I skip something?
Maybe they don't want people to get 300 honor for losing 4 different BGs?
Which dismount and hamstring, which causes a debuff that causes you to sink, which causes you to drown. Of course, there will be some sort of time-sink quest involved in repeatedly treading these waters.
RE: 5000 Gold "not that big a deal". You folks amuse me with your assumptions sometimes :P
I started TBC without the +100% mount. I didn't get it until the mid-60's. I got my +60% flier not long after turning 70, before I was done with Netherstorm & SMV.
See, I've always been a crafter first; I consider "hat-tricking" my professions more of an accomplishment than hitting 60 or 70. I don't have gathering skills on my main, in fact I have what some people call the Poorhouse Pair (tailoring & enchanting). What money I've been able to make on my tradeskills has primarily been from disenchanting mats.
Most nights? I can either run my 5-6 dailies, or grind something for an hour. Sundays are reserved for the one night I can run instances. Lately, to be honest, I've been playing the alts instead on these days.
Where does my money go? To try and get the mats I need for what I'm trying to make. Right now that's my Spellstrike set, requiring 10 primal mights (900-1000 gold) and 20 Spellcloth (around 800 gold). Remember, I don't raid or PvP so these are likely the best items in slot I will see before the expansion.
So 5000 gold is a lot of money to me -- partially by things I can't control (my playtime), partially by things I can (my priorities). For me, right now, it's more than I care to spend on something that doesn't really help me that much. I can see where, with my priest (alchemy/herb) I may need to make it more of a priority because she'll be competing for herbs. RE: Riding in WotLK. What I'm betting on is a comparably massive expense at 78-80 to be allowed to fly in Northrend. Blizzard has all-but-ruled-out a faster mount, and I don't see anything suggesting the need for a water mount yet (frankly, I don't see this until we have underwater zones.)

I want WAR to be good so hard.
But I don't know if it will be the "wow-killer" people claim it to be.
WAR needs to come out soon though, cause I hate WoW so much right now.
At this point I'm really hoping that the timelines sync up so that WAR will fill in the boring period after we've got Sunwell on super-farm but before WOTLK or the patch leading up to it arrives. Then by the time I get bored of all PVP all the time in WAR, I can go back to fighting scripted bosses for the Professor Plums in WOW as I'm generally more inclined to do.

Someone in the other thread copied a developer post that Northrend flight might not be enabled until Level 78, probably by paying a vendor a heap of gold. So there is your sink.

You're saying 5000g is hard to come by if you spend it on other things first... of course it is.
I was talking more about making 70 gold a day doing the same 5-6 quests as all I can do that day for a couple of months. Given that in order to earn the money for the mount I'd be doing *nothing* but those dailies 5-6 days a week for 2-3 months, it's not worth it -- so I'll spend it toward my Spellstrike set. Is that clearer?

Ahaha, that's hilarious if it's a legitimate change. Thank christ I got the 30 marks from WSG for my pants when I did. Fuck that game and fuck the BGs.
So I still don't get why the epic flying mount is so fast compared to the regular flying mount. Sure it needs to be faster, but the massive increase sort of shuts them off from making an even faster mount at a later point, since it would need to be stupidly fast

I read that too, but I think it'd have to be more than that, because telling your players who've paid out the ass for the epic flyer that they have to spend another boatload of cash to get to do what we've been doing for the past (what will be) nearly two years is, well, not a very good idea.

That's what I was saying before about priorities, crafting isn't fun to me but being super speedy is so I chose that over crafting. If you have spent alot on other things epic flying will be harder to come by, but normal flying (which is the only thing I'd describe as necessary seeing as you don't have access to alot of content without it) isn't something you really ever have to go out of your way to obtain.
If Blacksmithing was nearly as cool as tailoring I'd have chosen that over epic flying, most likely.
Being able to log on for 20 minutes a day and come away with 70g is still an awesome thing though, dailies.
I'm getting the strangest lag. I lag out really bad and die in Thousand Needles. Then it allows me to rez right there, with no rez sickness. I keep going and kill a few guys, and then I get teleported to the graveyard with full health and no sickness.
Every other day I play this game it runs fine. But when they do the 'maintenence' it breaks the shit out of the game for me.
I may have been too hasty in saying "losing doesn't give a mark". I won a WSG and it never said that I got any, but they were there in my bags. I'm testing a BG out again, hoping we lose, to see if I'll get one.

The skies of Northrend are probably infested with Tikbalangs. That will knock you off your mount, and dispel your slow fall effect, whatever. Probably at level 80, you can buy an expensive item from a vendor, oh, I dunno who, that will protect you from these creatures.
I think we're talking past each other slightly, 815615. In the runup to 70, my money went to tradeskills (because I was more worried about 375^5) -- your "priorities" point -- and catching up my mount to flying. It was about a week after hitting 70 for me, roughly 8 hours of /played time.
I'm saying that after that, trying for 5000 gold would require me to do *nothing but my dailies* 5-6 days a week for a little over 2 months. My priority is playing a game to have fun, and doing the same 5-6 things a day for that long does not constitute my definition having fun. So it's not so much that I've been buying other things and that's keeping me from getting a mount, it's that the 5000 gold is too much money for too little benefit for this character.
Having said that... I'm likely to be doing nothing but the new dailies for the next couple of months for that slim chance at a badge. Having to depend on PuGs for heroics and only having one night a week to do them puts a crimp in that... Then again, with Nether's being BoE now maybe I can just buy them off the AH.
You could use the money gained from dailies (plus your proffesions) to speculate to accumulate, seeing as it's essentially free money it's pretty much no-risk (I tried this but my knowledge of the game and economics wasn't good enough to make it worthwhile for me).
I just think there are enough ways in the game currently to make enough gold for anything anyone could want, really, having no crafting to do made getting epic flying considerably quicker though, yeah.
I hope Spinebreaker's down until 9PM just to spite all (one) of you while I work here.. all alone.. with no 100% pushback reduction from icy veins to comfort me.
I may have been too hasty in saying "losing doesn't give a mark". I won a WSG and it never said that I got any, but they were there in my bags. I'm testing a BG out again, hoping we lose, to see if I'll get one.
