iphone doesnt ring

My dad gave me his iphone a few days ago because he never used it, and I got everything set up the way I want to EXCEPT that it seems that no matter what setting I change it does not ring when I get a call, or when I get a text message. Is there some hidden "silence all" setting I am missing? I know it is quite capable of making noise, because I can hear my ringtone on the Settings menu, but I've missed every single call I've gotten so far because it doesn't ring or vibrate at all when they come.

    It's stupid, but is the ringer sound from the side rocker switch turned all the way down?
