Spotlight, Then Denied "MS Screws Another Gamer"
"First off, we would like to say congrats to "Cow Moolester" for being on the Xbox Spotlight on Xbox.com. When we first saw the name, we couldn’t help but laugh at the GamerTag. However, due to the new popularity, it seems that all is not well…
While we don’t usually post Spotlights here on the site, we decided to make a special exception for Cow since we feel that he is being treated unfairly. After recieving the spotlight, someone actually complained that his gamertag had "moolester" in it, which he claims means "to disturb, interfere with, or annoy." Whether he is telling the truth, we don’t really care, since what kind of reward is to be spotlighted and then told to change his name?
So, 360Sync is standing up for Cow, and hoping that the fine folks at Xbox can undo this mistake from happening."
No. No sympathy at all. Asked to change his name? How the hell does that warrant an internet campaign. Does he lose his hard-earned gamerscore? Does he lose the Live account at all?
If it's just a petty name change, then goodness me some people need to get some priorities.
He didn't break the TOS. Molest means to annoy. Just because someone has a sick mind and automatically goes to the other definition doesn't mean he broke the TOS. And Burty, the is Bacon Bits.
Back in Everquest days, you could make your last name whatever you wanted when you hit level whatever. Twenty I think. My friend would pick the most foul name he could think of until a GM would ask him to change it, so then he'd change it to something more foul and coast for a couple more months.
But still, you broke the rules, you change the name. I hate that backtracking, he knows why he picked moolester. To annoy? Pleeeaase!
Just because someone has a sick mind and automatically goes to the other definition doesn't mean he broke the TOS.
Ooohhh, Bullshit and you know it.
I mean come on.
Cow is my friend. I know his intentions. Someone got jealous of all the attention, so they got their friends to report them. Do you even know the definition of molest?

Yeah, no.
MS own, operate and run the service. If they deem a name to be unacceptable, they have every right to ask you to change it.

You're being obtuse. You're trying to tell me that if someone were to call you a child molester, you would first assume that they're just worried about you being annoying to little boys and girls?
Language carries weight regardless of intention. Faggots literally mean cigarettes, you know.

Don't go down the dictionary defenition route. It sucks that your friend has to change his name, I know you can get pretty attached to your GT. But if you're genuinly telling me that you don't understand why he would be asked to change his name, then you're choosing to be more ignorant than those people who "Don't know the definition"
There is absoloutly no way "I am referring to cow annoying" cuts it in this argument.

Yes. And no one really uses the "to annoy" definition anymore, just like no one uses "gay" to mean happy anymore. The few times I have with the former, I got a few raised eyebrows.
He got a sophomoric giggle out of it for a while, but now it's time to move on.
shutup about definition. popular usage connotates a bad SEXUAL touch
Yea, POPULAR USAGE! That doesn't mean those were his intentions. I'm through with everyone here. I'm just sticking up for a friend.
And that's all well and good, but seriously, they've asked him to change his name. Is it a free change? Some people pay $10 for that.
Deal with it, it's really not that big of an issue.

This thread title is misleading as its more "Stupid ass name got changed after being featured" than "M$ SCREWZ ANUDDA GAYMER"
He certainly wasn't "screwed", but he didn't deserve to be made to change it. It's a harmless joke, a play on words. I mean, the intent is obvious, here.
No! I am referring to the act of rolling my tongue over, and tasting the plumage of the common everyday passerine bird. Not my fault you have sick minds.
I don't see how its offensive. How is the term Cow Moolester offensive?
How many people know people who molest or have been molested by cattle? Its a bloody joke and censoring what is after all a play on words is unfair IMO.
If they are going to do this to Cow, they should change all the other gamertags that are remotely like offensive words.
Cow has been using this gamertag for 2 years, Ms made him an ambassador, did a gamer spotlight on him and then told him his tag was offensive. I'm sorry but the former points are an acceptance of Ms employees that his gamertag is not deemed offensive by Ms.
A complaint by a small number of users on the issue should be ignored as it would be in many other cases if only a small number of people complain.
Changing one letter in a word to bypass a censor is a common tactic on both forums and television and playing on words has been occuring for decades and has been acceptable for decades so I don't see how this is different especially given it has been acceptable for the past 2 years.
That's my take on it. Cow is a good member of the Xbox forums and a lot of the staff know him so they would have highlighted when they first met him if they felt it was against the TOS. You don't reward someone and then kick them in the face. Not if you have any manners anyway.

I generally believe that people should just be able to "take a joke," or whatever, but this is not a big deal at all. Who cares. If MS told me my user name was off limits and they would change it for free, I would say, fine, big deal. Who cares. This isn't a kid having his Bungie-signed Xbox360 getting wiped clean of its priceless signatures.
That said, I'm going to take the devil's advocate side here:
Cow Moolester. How can that be offensive?
Well, first of all, it implies sodomy, which is offensive to some people.
Secondly, some religions like Hindu consider the cow to be sacred. So it might be offensive there.
Third, it just has a general negative sexual connotation that might be offensive to people.
Also, if something is against policy, and is not caught until later, even after dealings with people in the company, that doesn't automatically make it inline with policy, and immune to being remedied.
None of this is a big deal anyway. Like I said, I feel like people should be able to take a joke. But I also don't feel like the gamer involved is being 'screwed' at all and this is not a big deal.
If he had been charged $10 for a name change, or had been banned from Live or something, yeah, then he'd been "screwed." But this is just not a big deal.

The fun thing about the English language is that it is always evolving, heck all language evolves definations change as the people use the words or connotations get attached to words. Your friends use of Cow Moolester to everyone else in the world says Cow Fucker. It would be the same if he called himself Haulin Faggots or Feelin Gay. Both words meant something completely different orginally but not are just terms (one being derrogitory) for Homosexuals.
I appauld your friends clever name but his prize is a name change and he shouldnt be surprised.
I wonder if "Gay Swastika Fagot" would be against the rules as well. What an inane discussion. He knows what the word primarily means; just because there is a secondary definition doesn't magically make it okay to use in an environment where they have rules against profanity or harsh language in gamertags.

That's what he gets for having so many gamer points. Just goes to show you... If you have a name against TOS, don't get the spotlight. Stay mediocre and you'll be fine.
Besides, it sounds like the guy should be doing stuff outside anyway...

I named two of my EQ characters "Drezdar Fastercastermaster" (which I thought was just funny if very long) and an Iksar Monk named "Ssassassissassi Ssassissassissassis" which, I admit, was really an attempt to annoy people.
I never got flagged for it. People found it very funny for some damn reason. So I failed.

Back "in the day," I knew a guy in Asheron's Call named Cupid Stunt.
Took them months to catch it, and by that time he was around level 55 (in the first couple years of the game, that showed dedication).
Also, Cow Moolester is a fuckawesome name.
