Ok, just read the first issue. J'onn is really dead? That sucks.
Also, it didn't seem to follow that well off the end of Countdown. Didn't everyone realize that Orion fought Darkseid, Darkseid died, and the New Gods were no more? And what's up with the Monitors? It seems like a lot of time had passed for them. What's an Orrery? I thought more universes than just Universe 51 were destroyed in Countdown.
So many confusing things...
I think only the entire universe of Earth-51 was destroyed. I know Prime destroyed that Zod Earth, but I guess he left the rest of the universe alone?
Orrery: An orrery is a mechanical device that illustrates the relative positions and motions of the planets and moons in the solar system in heliocentric model.
(There was also an orrery as an add-on to Oblivion, which is where I had seen it).
The monitors do seem a bit different, since they've apparently had time to fully establish identities and even develop romantic relationships.
Here's a question: who is the black guy who wakes up to the news of J'onn's death?
Where are people getting the idea that Nix is going to be OMAC? I have seen it in quite a few places, and I don't understand. Was it something in Countdown? I didn't read that.
I haven't been able to shake the notion that Connor Hawke could step up to New Godhood. He's in a good position for some deux ex machina to come save him, and he's viewed as redundant with the more popular Green Arrow running around. Plus, every pantheon needs an archer.

But isn't the Earth the centre of the universe, post IC? I thought that if the earth of any universe was destroyed the rest of the universe goes boom as well.

No, it all goes boom if New Earth goes boom. All the other realities are built upon New Earth as the foundation/keystone.
Didn't the Sinestro Corp Wars have a line that said something along the lines of; Oa may be the center of our universe, but Earth is the center of the multiverse?

reading through it again, something libra said to vandal savage kind of stood out, when libra like makes fun of him because everyone's been waiting 50,000 years for vandal savage to conquer the world and savage gets all pissed. i thought that savage did conquer the world every once in a while but it's a lot of work and he just gives it up sometimes to reconquer later if he feels like it. he's only been having a little trouble the past hundred years or so because of these damn superheroes.
not like it's a complaint or a plot point or anything, i guess. i just thought it was odd, especially since i'm pretty sure i heard that about savage from one milliion which morrison also wrote. i guess savage could have just been lying about it.

He's also not averse to the taste of human flesh, sir!
By the way, how canon is DC 1,000,000? Like, did it portray the true future of the DC universe? Can I expect that my post-awareness infobody neomind will be reading about a Batman who is the warden of a prison-planet when the 853rd century comes around?
To reiterate, hopefully for the last time, when we started work on Final Crisis, J.G. and I had no idea what was going to happen in Countdown or Death Of The New Gods because neither of those books existed at that point. The Countdown writers were later asked to ‘seed’ material from Final Crisis and in some cases, probably due to the pressure of filling the pages of a weekly book, that seeding amounted to entire plotlines veering off in directions I had never envisaged, anticipated or planned for in Final Crisis.
The way I see it readers can choose to spend the rest of the year fixating on the plot quirks of a series which has ended, or they can breathe a sight of relief, settle back and enjoy the shiny new DC universe status quo we’re setting up in the pages of Final Crisis and its satellite books. I’m sure both of these paths to enlightenment will find adherents of different temperaments.
Neither Death of the New Gods nor Countdown matter.
Damn, I was just typing that. Morrison had Final Crisis scripted almost a year ago, gave the Countdown... team Final Crisis plot outlines and asked them to not interfere with Final Crisis.
Once you’ve had the image of Dr. Light hammering away at Sue Dibny’s ruptured rear end burned into your neurons

Also:
As we’ll learn, when we see Darkseid’s ‘Fall’ from the world of the New Gods - as depicted in DCU #0 - he’s falling backwards through time. In DCU #0 we’re watching him fall back through the present, into the past of Seven Soldiers where he finally comes to rest in the body of ‘Boss Dark Side’, the gangster from that story.
if I was a DC fan who bought those titles I would be pretty goddamn pissed
I don't think any rage should be directed at Morrison though. The editors are to blame, not the creators. He was given Final Crisis and went to work on it before Countdown was even conceived. Well, maybe the creators who didn't pay attention to the Final Crisis outlines, but an editor should have reined them in.
He did say something about Death of the Gods or whatever still kind of mattering. Orion's injuries when Turpin finds him in the dumpster are from something that happened in that title.
Interesting interview. I'll admit to kind of skimming it while doing other things. I am going to read it more closely later today after work.
Final Crisis #2 opens with Sonny Sumo and the Super Young Team-- sweet!
Frankenstein will show up! Fricking sweet!
I hope we see more of Aurakles, the Neanderthal super-hero.
Man, if what I read of DotNG is any indication, I'd be pissed more if it did count. I was kind of embarrassed for Starlin, it was (to put it charitably) far from his best work. It's a shame too, because ten years ago I would have thought he was the only person for a project like this.
There’s certainly that aspect to it. Once you’ve had the image of Dr. Light hammering away at Sue Dibny’s ruptured rear end burned into your neurons, it’s hard to write him as one more cackling gimmick villain. I thought it was fun to play up his priapic nature and I enjoy writing super villain conversations but yeah, we’re hoping readers will cheer loudly when they see the fate Greg Rucka and the Spectre have in store for randy Arthur Light.
You know, I kind of want to be pissed at the rather crass, disrespectful way he phrased this. But then I remember that Identity Crisis was a shitty story completely undeserving of respect, and I feel better. I do disagree with his opinion that making Light a rapist elevated him above "cackling gimmick villain." If anything, he became an even bigger joke of a villain after Identity Crisis, relying even more on his new gimmick; rape. He was much more multi-layered as an extremely powerful, cowardly, buffoon.
I really hope the the Spectre kills him in the most amusing way possible.
I kind of have a feeling it may be a fakeout though. Like they're going to tease out the idea, and then not do it.
A lot of people seem to viewe Dr. Light as, for whatever reason, a successful reinvention of an old "lame" villain. I don't think DC editorial would want to kill him off. Maybe the Spectre will make him into the new Doll Man.
"Doll Man? Well, that isn't so bad. I'm gonna shrink or som-WHERE IS MY PENIS?!"
because Identity Crisis is only good if you don't know the characters too well.
Yeah, to be honest, we were both pretty new to comics when we read it. It will always have a special place in my heart because it introduced me to a lot of DC characters that aren't A-Listers. It sparked my love of Green Arrow. You have to admit, it really had its moments.

The outcast Monitor.
I bet he's also OMAC.
No real evidence to back this up, just a hunch.

that has actually basically been my reasoning.
it's the fact that he kind of looks like omac coupled with the abundance of OTHER kirby characters being highlighted that makes me think it, really
I imagine the Zod Earth Monitor only failed once

Basically, what I'm asking is can I assume that

Neither Death of the New Gods nor Countdown matter.
There you are then.

other than that though I agree his "new persona" has not been very effective
