I've got two questions: One, is http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/onkyo-tx-sr805-black/4505-6466_7-32430613.html?tag=txt a good receiver?
And also, when putting in devices such as an Xbox or a DVD player, do they plug straight into the TV or into the receiver?

Well if you're taking about audio then definitely go to your receiver if you're talking about video go directly to your TV. That's just me. I've never bought any receivers that improve the video signal.

Oh! I just clicked the link. You can't go wrong with Onkyo. They're a great value. The one I have right now is the model from almost five years back and it's still working perfectly and I've never had the urge to upgrade. I absolutely love mine. To get an increase in your sound you'd really have to pay a lot more money. It's an excellent but.

Do they sell component cables that could go from my TV to the xbox's cables, sort of like a component extension cord?

All you need are RCA couplers, theyre 2 female ends that join RCA wire together. They also happen to be super cheap.

Fun Fact! Any cable with an RCA style plug in end (Red/White/Yellow, RGB Component, Sub Cables, etc etc) are interchangeable! So rather than buying another expensive pair of component cables, get the red white and yellow cheapies and theyll do the same thing.

Are you building a sound system to power a movie theater?

If so buy that receiver. Onkyo is amazing but that an 805 is a wee bit much for most people, IMO.

edit: Also, as for plugging things in:

Generally you have one cord going from the receiver to the TV for both video and audio. Personally I use HDMI. You then plug everything else into the receiver and set up the input options so that everything upconverts through the one HDMI cable and you get your audio/video. If that makes any sense?
