I'm in a temperate rain forest. It's, in fact, warmer than Michigan. Which is kind of nice I guess. But it's...you know... rainy. So that's less than stellar.

You know, if you have a tribe of close friends where you live, you could use them as a "second family" for the photo.

Yeah, thinking about it now I'll probably hit up the huge Thanksgiving where all of us lonely 20-somethings that are stuck on the island through the winter will be having this year.

This honestly sounds like such a fun thing to do. I love being isolated, and just somewhere I can relax. It's gotta get pretty lonely, though eh. AT LEAST YOU HAVE INTERNET FAMILY

Both(!) entries are very nice. I am in a training class right now (all week) and do have something to add, but it will have to be next week. Also, time for a new topic. Standby, new topic in a metter of minutes...

    Photo Exercise #9 - Sleep
    Duration: Month of December

Winter will officially be upon us this month, and the world is shutting down. It seems a good time to for us to shake off our seasonal lethargy and try to catch some sleep. As always, I encourage you to shake it up a little and see how you can illustrate this simple word in a way that challenges your creativity. Try to not merely sleepwalk thorugh it. ;-)

Prosp - only issue is that burnt out corner on the right. It's value is so high that the detail in the face is getting overwhelmed and my eye keeps going to the highlight.

Hey, didn't notice you were in OKC too. I'm guessing based on Projecks response he maybe as well? Currently my camera is in for repairs, mirror lockup but I guess thats acceptable for a 40 year old camera

    Photo Exercise #11 - Composition "Rules" #1 - Lines
    Duration: Month of February

For the next few months, let's practice the basic 'rules' of composition. I put the word rules in quotes because we all know that (1) following these practices does not guarantee a good picture and (2) failing to follow them does not guarantee a bad picture. But it's better to be familiar with how to use these guidelines before deciding to ditch them, so why not practice them?

For the duration of these assignments, I'll be following this site (http://asp.photo.free.fr/Composition/photoProgramCompMainClass.shtml) as it has a good list of the basic rules of composition as well as some good descriptions and info. Check it out!!

For the first in this series, let's skip Simplicity and go straight to Lines. <--(that's a link there, by the way)

Which of the assignments is this for? If it's lines, would you explain what lines you are using? I see several in the image, but am curious what your intent was when taking the picture, so it'd be cool for you to describe how you think it fits the assignment.

Oh, and to make sure I am not coming off the wrong way - there is no 'right' or 'wrong' in these as long as you are shooting pictures specificially for the assignment and not merely looking through your archives for something you took in the past. So as long as you're taking a picture with an intent to meet the assignment (however you choose to interpret it) then Yes! You're doing it right!

I was trying to use the lines to point toward the center of attention (the apple core sitting in the fountain) as well as create a more interesting composition.

Composition is one of the things I feel I'm weakest at. At least, weakest at knowing what makes a good composition.

I think a slight problem in that is that the lines kind of miss the apple, though if the apple were higher, I think that the lines of the drinking fountain would do the job very nicely, and they form a nice curve, as well. Also, the trees in the background kind of distract from the lines, kind of like the guide link's first example.

I think in terms of learning composition, they say the best way is to study works with good composition, but that is kind of hard to learn from without someone showing you what makes the composition work, at least at first. At least, that's been my experience; I didn't understand what to look for until a teacher showed me.
