I'd really love to just play an MMO that was all about exploring and nothing else.

Just one stupidly big uncharted world.

And yes, the reason to play Guild Wars was the PvP.

Like, charting, exploring unknown places, establishing settlements, trying to survive and fighting off fearsome locals/beasts?

That could be a cool idea, a MMO that develops and actually changes over time.

*nods* I'd like to think so.

What kind of setting are you thinking about? Futuristic with finding new planets and terraforming? Maybe a settlement colony ship crashlands on some random planet and you have to do whatever on the planet.

I'd love something like Mass Effect, without combat. And with much more involved artifact-type interactions. Also, more varied planets.

But yeah, I like shooting stuff, but I like exploring just as much, if not more.

But I wouldn't want an MMO because oh god I don't want an MMO.

I was leaning towards an older setting. Sail powered ships, musket type technology. Or maybe even lower and let people advance technology to that level.

But, thinking about it, the crash-landing futuristic setting is a pretty good one. Assume most of your technology is knocked out during the landing, forcing you to to have to re-discover tech, hmmm.

    Kinda like Trigun maybe.

Yeah, maybe the starting tech level of Trigun with the ability to go up from there, a decent springboard for the setting at least.

WoW has that minor issue of being a job instead of a game.

Though, I guess that only applies if you're looking for "fun" in your MMOs.

Guild Wars was the best MMO I'd seen that you could have fun with over the last five years or so. I know I had fun with it.

I'm not nearly competitive enough to enjoy a game based almost entirely around PvP, so I didn't try it.
Buh? The fuck game did you look at? It had plenty of PvM.

If it did, not many reviewers were talking about it. What I was reading on the game seemed pretty focused on PvP.
I don't do PvP. It had tons of PvM that reviewers loved to ignore, I guess. PvP was not the only reason to play that game.
Didn't they add most of the PvM after initial release? I'm pretty sure it was focused on PvP on release--that was it's gimmick, so to speak.

When I played UO the stratics boards used to get spammed with threads advertising that you could "Play Ultima Online like a job!". I can't think of anything less appealing than taking a source of fun and converting into 9 till 5 tedium.

The thrust of the game was PvP, though. I mean the game is called "Guild Wars" for a reason. You could play it and enjoy it as a PvE game for awhile but I think you'd only be able to get a few months of enjoyment out of it that way at best.

Yeah, that's basically what I thought. It's been a few years since I'd read anything on Guild Wars, but I did remember something about it having a low level cap, and that the reason for leveling wasn't to fight bigger rabbits for better loot, but to fight other players. I don't know whether there was PvE endgame, but it didn't sound like it from anything I heard.

Than feels physical pain at the very mention of WoW and reacts accordingly

That would explain why he's always so grouchy about it when he does show up.

Because WoW is evil and anyone who plays it is a bad person for playing it. If they like it they're probably also copycat-BTK killers.
