Silly thread topic, I know but I'm sitting here playing Super Mario Galaxy late into the night and I'm actually smiling which hasn't happened for me while playing a video game in a long time.

What other games do you guys get this sort of feeling from? It's really refreshing when a game can rely on straight-up gameplay vs an empowering type of feeling or perverse sense of humor. I'm a big fan of RPGs but a lot of times they rely on the want to hit someone for 10 instead of 8 to pull you along. (I'm not going to pretend that sappy story lines are the reason to spend multiple dozens of hours grinding out a level.)

Which games have made you think, "Man, this is why I play video games. This shit right here!"
More recently I think Oblivion, although more for the beautiful atmosphere than gameplay, has done that. Also in the past, the original PoP and SoT did this too.

What about you guys? What are the real gems that make you happy to play?

Definitely great examples up there. I whole heartedly agree with Ouendan and Katamari Damacy.
I just now got to the first galaxy where you do the Super Monkey Ball like area. Haha, that was just fun. I mean I don't think I've ever thought, "Wow, I can't wait to get into that cave or ancient ruin in Final Fantasy." Not that those games aren't fun in their own right but this is just different. : )

I haven't gotten around to getting Galaxy for my Wii, just No More Heroes, but this is the most persuasive thing I've heard about it yet. I think I'll go pick it up.

Gleeful fun... actually No More Heroes had me jumping up off my couch, going "YUS" occasionally. Sometimes it takes a game that's willing to be stupidly fun to hit that level. Something that doesn't take itself seriously. I mean, I'm playing Lost Odyssey now, and I'm loving it, but it's not... that kind of "weeeeeee!" feeling. It's more like reading a serious novel, in terms of my personal responses. Sometimes it's nice to just PLAY a game, and perhaps that's one reason why Mario has always been so great. It doesn't try to be anything but a fun game.

I rented No More heroes and it definitely is a great game but yeah I didn't even think that SMG would be this much fun. I mean I just got the Wii a few weeks ago. I played the hell out of brawl with some friends, I rented NMH, did the whole Wii Sports thing. It wasn't that I was skeptical about SMG I just didn't have it at the top of my list but wow. It is just fun. I mean you just look at the galaxies and you think, "That looks like fun to run around in I'm going there first." Every place that I've gone through so for just feels great and fun and you want to explore everywhere but at the same time you want to see a new place. I know there won't be anything that I say positive about this game that hasn't been said already but it really does live up to the hype for me.

I loved NMH but I only had one problem with it. I wish that you could pull off the killing blows with a broad arm swing. It really seems like they finessed it down to a wrist flick so you didn't have to swing like crazy but that's what I wanted! I mean sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. the horizontal seemed to detect it more often but if I was doing an overhead swing I almost always just ended up doing a wrist flick at the end. Were there settings that I could maybe adjust? Maybe it was just me. As my first Wii-control title I just wanted to really get into it. I was standing there all goofy and acting out the sword movements but they just wouldn't register sometimes.

Yeah, maybe it's just that I'm an older gamer but it was really something to think that Mario was back on top again (with the rest of Nintendo, actually.) It's really amazing that this character gas been in so many groundbreaking games. A lot of it has to do with the Wii controller but I think that it would have been an amazing game on the Wii too. Well... let me think that one through again. Even though it only uses the Wii-mote sparingly it really uses it to great effect. Flicking your wrist to smack an enemy doesn't seem like it's going to get old. : )

Also, for any more prospective buyers. The screenshots and even the video clips don't do this game justice (as I suspect with most of the Wii games) I still wasn't very impressed even after seeing trailers and such.

I don't have the time to tell ya that with five minutes with Super Mario Galaxy will privide ya with more inventiveness than any o' these games manage in twen'y flabbin' HD ready levels ... ah.. if I had the time I'd prolly mention at this point that this game doesn't feature an assassin or a space marine or a soldiah or rapist or a guy that sticks a screw drivah into people's necks;

It's just about a wee fat man, floatin' about in space, havin' the time o' his life.

Want me tell ya how one can't conceive o' how the ver' o' poss'ly have such wondrous notions such as these.. how I got the time? You want me to tell ya about how this game makes every other game least o' sheer look like sally jolly bobbles from gaggly baby mani' ac' I ain't got time to tell ya tha' and frankly I don't know what that sentence means.

If i had the time I would probably add at this point that nothing has ever looked like this game and nothing probably ever will look like this game again except that we play.. in the afterlife...

For me, my moment would be getting the second airship in FF6. Everything has gone to hell. Just about everything that can go wrong has. Everyone in the world is miserable and it seems like there's no chance of anything getting better. But getting the airship, that's the point where things go from "all hope is lost" to "we just might have a chance." I dunno, probably a little cheesy, but that scene really works for me. Everything just kind of comes together so that when the airship takes off and the music starts playing, it brings a smile to my face.

Nah, I know what you mean. I think that FF2 (IV) was the first JRPG that I played. My friend insisted that I play it even though I didn't have an SNES and he let me borrow his and I know I said earlier that I've never been excited to go on a dungeon crawl in any FF I was still excited to get into the next town exploring to see what it had. Plus, the Big Whale? How many Airships go to the fucking moon? Four words. Big Mutha Fuckin' Whale.

Haha, nice. On a slightly related note, have they done punching in a game as well as they did in the Chronicles of Riddick game? Is it better in these new Condemned games? I tend to shy away from horror-type games so I don't know. What I do know though is that in CoR when you let loose on someone with Vin Diesel's fist you beat the ever loving hell out of them. I'd rented it and my roommate was watching me play it and the first time you got to punch someone I wasn't really sure how to do the controls but whatever spastic movements I did with the control sticks just let loose this insane two-punch combo that looked like the guys neck broke just from the speed of it. We were just cracking up at how brutal it looked out of surprise. : P

there was a moment in uncharted; i snuck up around a guy hiding beside an underground staircase, but he noticed me. i got into a fistfight with him while another baddie far off noticed us and shot off a rocket. the rocket hit a nearby wall just as i was beating down this fat guy with a shotgun slung over his shoulder; it lit him up in orange as the camera went to slow-mo for the final blow.

it was such a beautifully cinematic moment but something that could never happen again, even if i tried to make it happen. it was those kind of moments that made uncharted such a fucking blast

Phoenix Wright games. They make me so, so happy to be a gamer.

Crysis, which I'm playing through now, has moments that make me go 'oh shit YES'. Like when I'm driving a car up to a military checkpoint and I jump out before I reach it and I shoot the car's gas tank just as it approaches the dudes at the checkpoint and it blows up in a glorious ball of fire, taking them with it. That game has the sweetest explosions ever.
