Small file-size games?

What are some computer games that could fit on a thumbdrive and are good on LAN or singleplayer (since online play doesn't work on school computers) and preferably free. I've got a pretty good thumb drive, so I've got around 1.5 gigs of useable space

Quake 2 is always good. I love that as a LAN game. Make sure you get Rocket Arena and CTF as well.

Soldat is excellent, as are the various Liero clones.
If roguelikes are your thing, then NetHack, ADOM, Incursion, etc. etc. are all small executables as well. Dwarf Fortress is another option if you're fine with ASCII games.

You could install Starcraft to your thumbdrive right? That would be pretty fun.

Go classic. Doom. People used to install it on comp lab machines at my school all the time.

How restrictive is your network? Could you access stuff like FunOrb, InstantAction or Urban Dead?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned .kkrieger.

Weighing in at 96kb, while it might not be the best for LAN gaming, it certainly deserves to be mentioned just for its sheer tininess.

I can't access quotes from Shakespeare!
I think the net-censoring software they use was made by the 3rd Reich...

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is always a good choice, but it's multiplayer only. Very fun to play on a LAN.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

Doom, Doom 2, the Unreal Tournament GOTY demo, Halo demo, and definitely Soldat. If you can get a bunch of friends into it, there's no more exciting game.

    Roguelikes!

I love Nethack and IVAN, personally. IVAN is probably easier to get into but be warned that these are hard and frustrating games. I haven't even come close to beating either of them. Fortunately they are extremely replayable.

I have TotD on mine, but it's not free, and it's ridiculously finicky about latency (I can't get very far on a wireless network without desynchronizing). Still, I've put more hours into it (mostly singleplayer) than anything other than Freecell and Minesweeper.

Good god, I remember when I came back to PC gaming and people were using mice and I thought "oh man, left doesn't turn me around, how the hell am I going to do this..."

    I can't unlearn what I have learned.
