The only issue with a ranged person taking it, dropping it and kiting is that it seems when dropped an enemy can simply grab it. Like, without killing the former-standard bearer.
This is true for everyone, however.
At least with a ranged dps/support option, that person can effectively stand back from the literal front lines and likely participate to near or full capacity, whereas a melee dps or tank either has to drop it back and babysit the ranged/healers (which might not be a bad idea, just something to ponder) or risk having it on the front lines. They wouldn't necessarily be free to kite, per se, but at least they could heal/buff/debuff/dps at range and adjust the flag's position as necessary.
I assume it will be a channeled (hopefully lengthy) action to pick up a banner. It'd kinda suck if someone could snag it in one click and run off.

The question on how we should decide who are standard bearers is an important one. The person carrying it is going to be the most visible member of our guild on the battlefield. As such they're going to have to probably be the member with an even temperament. I'm betting that standard bearers will be very big targets and more than likely die a lot. The last thing anyone wants is the most visible person of our guild loosing their cool and dropping F-bombs at the opposition giving the guild as a whole a bad name.
So, I think we would want the standard bearer to be the type of person we would want the rest of the server to think of when they see any TSM member. I think that skill and class choice should be secondary and tertiary to the type of person behind the character holding the standard, cause they really do represent the standard of our guild as a whole. Ok, so maybe skill is important to, we don't want anyone to think we're pushovers.
I'll probably be playing as a Chosen and because of that I can be taking a lot of hits and aggro from holding the standard and also be able to go pretty much anywhere on the battle field and not have to worry about the heat of battle from up close melee. The only thing I would really have to be wary of is being nuked from afar but as long as I am in the thick of things, even if I die there can be a chance that someone else within our guild can recover our banner.
The person carrying it is going to be the most visible member of our guild on the battlefield.
Well, there rest of us will hopefully have our cloaks dyed with the TSM emblem and whatever else they let us put the emblem on. No tabards though hopefully, I hate tabards. So I think it will be pretty obvious that TSM is smacking folks around.
And why is everyone assuming there's only going to be one person carrying the Standard around? People die in RvR, they die alot. Other people are going to have to pick it up.
There can also be three banners, so that's three people if we use all of them.
I can see us giving the banner to someone at the start of the night, but after some serious RvR it's going to move around and (depending on the mechanic for losing and getting it back) will probably be lost repeatedly.
Also, I imagine after a bunch of fights that person is going to want to actually kill stuff so they'll hand it off to the next volunteer. We can't very well designate someone and they become full-time Standard Bearer. I can't see anyone wanting to do that.
Honestly, picking a "person" to hold the standard is a poor idea. As said, people die, other people will have to pick it up. As far as an initial carrier? You just need to give it some time and find out who is actually good at it. Theres no reason to not have your best standard bearer carrying one.
I will make the blackest blackguard/black orc for the banner
Fixed!

Dammit you retards, stop putting huge images inline.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Because when you guys were talking about the damn standard it became all "WAR is serious bizness" what with deciding on who gets to carry the dumb thing.
Warhammer isn't "serious bizness" god damn it. And just because you can't hit shit with a crappy flag doesn't mean that the axe or sword or hammer you've got doesn't work just as good.
Because when you guys were talking about the damn standard it became all "WAR is serious bizness" what with deciding on who gets to carry the dumb thing.
Thinking strategically is "serious bizness"?
I mean, I'm kind of a Warhammer noob, and I get that there's humour and shenanigans involved and all, but watching some of those table top guys play, they sure seem to play to their strengths/against their opponents weaknesses.

I'm going to assume that you can't talk across realms. So mr Goody goody wont beable to understand whn you call hima slobbering nob gobbler, he will only read " So, and So says something in a language you can't understand" and that will be it.

I suppose so. Kind of a lame thing to do, but eh, not exactly game breaking.
Have they talked about what scenarios are going to be like? Because what if there is a 24 man instance, 12 people on each side, and there is one group waiting for the instance, but I don't want to be with them in the same instance. Will there be like a lobby system or something in place that will work with this?
Also, I still want to be the standard bearer.

Luckily, this isn't the tabletop game.
I guess I don't think there needs to be serious discussion about who gets to carry the flag. Clearly you'll pick on merit and skill and all that crap. But since only 1 guy seems to get to carry the standard, it just doesn't seem that big of a deal, but I guess it is. My bad.
I just want to wear the armor of the damned and smash stuntie faces in with a huge 2 handed axe. Or sever poncy high elf limbs from their wastrel bodies, raising their severed heads high in tribute to the Great Architect of Fate.

Are there not three banners for top guilds?
If we assume there should be a couple of reserves to save the banners if the carriers every go down, and there should be enough banner related jobs for everyone.
And that's without talking about who gets to carry around other guilds banners
Well, in terms of standard bearing, dont look at me. I'm not playing a tank, I play DPS. I kill people, kill more people, and continue killing until I get killed, thats the only way to go. You guys can continue bickering about banners while I revel in my massive slaughter.
