Spirited Away DVD weirdness

OK, so I purchased Spirited Away on DVD and am disappointed that on my LCD television, the picture seems to be pillar-boxed. Zooming in slightly fixes the pillar-boxing but absolutely wrecks the picture and the quality as a whole seems to be shit in general, especially for such beloved material. Essentially this is abhorrent practice for a DVD that was released in 2003.
Is this under-scan unique to the region 1 release, or is this a worldwide problem? Are these movies planned for blu-ray any time soon? Lastly, are Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle the same way? I'm just extremely disappointed in the picture quality presented here.
