Some preliminary details about the next Stargate spinoff series have been
revealed by Brad Wright, executive producer of SG-1 and Atlantis.
It's all just a rough idea at this point, and they've said that they'll probably wait until Atlantis finishes up its run before even starting it.
The basic concept is that millions of years ago, the Ancients sent out an automated ship to seed planets across the universe with Stargates. A while after that, they sent out an inhabited ship to follow after that and explore around. That's pretty much it so far. They haven't said who is going to be on the ship, if that's where the central story originates from, or even what point in time the show happens.
One more detail is that using a 9-chevron address will connect to the original ship that was sent out.
They're saying that the idea will be expensive, (probably through more on-location shots and more special effects) and that they won't go through with it if they have to cut corners.
It'll be interesting to see if this show ever actually happens and what they do with it.
UPDATE, 3/22:
Here's the first picture of the SGU main cast:
Filming for the new show started a couple of months ago. Sources point to the premier airing on
October 2nd with a two hour show, and then running back to back with Amanda Tapping's show,
Sanctuary, on Friday nights.
As far as we know, the story is still pretty much planned as what I said above, except it will still take place in the established universe and timeline. The SGC will discover how to use the 9th chevron and a crew will go through the gate and get stuck on the ship called Destiny, set up a pre-determined course, following the Stargate seeding ship. Due to the nature of being stuck on a ship in another galaxy, they're likely to not have much contact with the SGC. It's going to be generally a younger, less experienced crew, but the creators have promised it's not going to be Stargate: 90210.
There are rumors that Michael Shanks may have a guest appearance as good ol' Dr. Daniel Jackson in the premier.
It's going to be a three-part premier, with the first two hours of it (titled
Air) running on one night, and the third on the next week.
The general description is as follows:
When a research team is forced to evacuate their secret base, they find themselves on board an Ancient vessel that is millions of years old -- with failing life support and no way to gate home.
They're going for a theme with the first few episode titles, with the next ones being
Fire,
Water, and
Earth. The next few continue the single-word title convention, being
Life,
Time,
Justice, and
Space.
Here's the lowdown on the crew:
Dr. Nicholas Rush
Played By: Robert Carlyle
When a group of scientists and soldiers find themselves trapped on an Ancient ship in the far reaches of space, Dr. Rush works to unlock the mysteries of the Ancient ship Destiny and return the group home. But evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.
Colonel Everett Young
Played By: Justin Louis
Colonel Young requested to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he commands a secret off-world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him to be prepared for anything.
Lt. Matthew Scott
Played By: Brian J. Smith
Green and rough around the edges, Lt. Scott is thrust into the role of leader well before he is ready for the responsibility. He must learn to command, earn the respect of his people through action, and manage the diverse personalities aboard the ship.
MSgt. Tamara Johansen
Played By: Alaina Huffman
Beautiful, tough, and from a modest background, Tamara joined the Air Force when she couldn’t afford medical school. With only paramedic-level training, she ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship — but is overwhelmed by her lack of knowledge and experience.
Eli Wallace
Played By: David Blue
Eli is a total slacker … who just happens to be an utter genius with anything he puts his mind to, be it computers, mathematics, video games, or anything else. A lack of confidence has left him with an acerbic sense of humor.
Chloe Armstrong
Played By: Elyse Levesque
Stunning and sexy, Chloe is the daughter of a U.S. Senator. She had a silver spoon upbringing and is a little spoiled … but politically and socially savvy. She dreams of following in her father’s footsteps, but the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character.
MSgt. Ronald Greer
Played By: Jamil Walker Smith
Sergeant Greer is a Marine with an explosive temper that he finds hard to control. His past is a mystery, but it’s clear that something dark formed the hard shell around him. He seeks out enemy combat for the thrill and release of killing.
Camille Wray
Played By: Ming-Na
A caustic representative of the international body that oversees the Stargate program and all related projects. When she is taken to the Destiny against her will, she is furious and certain to make her opinions on command decisions known.
Colonel Telford
Played By: Lou Diamond Phillips
A lifelong military man and the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition. It is not yet known if Phillips will be a full-time, permanent member of SGU’s cast or if he’ll be a recurring or one-off guest star. Stargate Atlantis launched with a big guest appearance by Robert Patrick (“Col. Marshall Sumner”), whose character was killed off in the pilot episode.
From the looks of the teaser that was aired during BSG's finale on Friday night, it seems that they're trying to set a different tone with this series.

In other news, an Atlantis movie is in the works, as well as a 3rd SG-1 movie, which will focus more around Jack.

Didn't they rape that IP hard enough yet?
Atlantis may not have started out too hot, but it's gotten very good.
SG-1 didn't start off too hot either.
I just watched Ark of Truth recently but haven't watched any Atlantis yet
Steam
I'm not really into Atlantis at all but I don't mind if they want to pull a Star Trek on this and just keep making it more and more elaborate.
Worst Movie Ever
I kinda liked Gary in it.
But yeah, it wasn't... it wasn't... wasn't...
My brain halts when I try to think about it.
I was nine when that movie came out
I remember it pretty clearly
it was so bad
I remember the line "that's one cold fish I'd like to fry"
Dicks cumming everywhere.
Yeah I...
I saw that in theaters.
me too
to be fair I was nine
edit: Lost in Space, not Stargate, I never got to see stargate in theaters, but I think I was 12 or 13 when that was in theaters
wow
I was like 10 when Stargate came out in theaters. I don't think I saw that back then but I definitely saw it on video shortly after. I really, really liked the concept of ancient Egyptian aliens for some reason.
I was 12.
We have a cd shaped like the stargate in front of the pyramid with a few songs from the soundtrack somewhere. It came with the vhs tape of the movie.
What's wowable about that?
You really, really suck at math.
I loled.
i'd have captain joey and boba fett duke it out while giant singing gorilla (the mayor of the town who rode around in his kickass dump truck) would tell them to set aside their differences so they could stop buzz lightyear and batman
I was twelve or thirteen when I saw it in theaters, and was just beginning to really see girls in a different light.
So basically I had the hugest crush on
at the time.
But yeah I totally dig StarGate and would be interested in seeing where they could take a new series.

They are working on one right now.
Lost in Space.....well, there's not much to say about it really, wasn't the best film in the world...
It'll be about how a rebel group of Jaffa escaped their Goa'uld overlord and accidentally dialed the gate address that sent them to the land of the Tau'ri. Desperate and alone, they set up a bakery to create and sell replication of their traditional dessert delicacies. The most loved of which consists of a small cake-like cookie with citrusy flavoring gel covered with the sugared extract of the beans of a cocoa plant.
Oh, just the fact that Stargate was in theaters. Ima noob when it comes to movies that don't involve matt damon for the action or J-Lo for the sexy..ness ( not porn)
Casting calls have gone out for the main cast. These are very broad descriptions at this point and also the names can easily change. Rodney McKay started out as Dr. Benjamin Ingram.
They want a known name for the leader of the team, and mostly unheard-ofs for the rest of the cast. Kinda like how SG-1 was cast.
Also, where is my fucking Jaffa?
Also, the Jaffa are just enjoying the good life now, free from slavery, and rollin' on tretonin.
