International travel on the cheap

Any ideas on how to move great distances at minimal expense? Specifically, I want to go from Toronto or Buffalo to Taiwan.

I love using farecompare.com -- it seems to be the only one that lets you see the cheapest flight for every day in the next few months with a single search. I managed to find a flight for $539 after taxes & fees. Are there any other good sites like this out there?

I've heard of people flying on the cheap by acting as couriers, or swabbing the deck on a ship in exchange for free board; but has anyone actually done this? How easy is it to arrange? I've seen some sites that say they will help you find someone to hire you as a single-instance courier, but you have to pay a membership fee just to see if there are any offers.

The courier thing sounds sketchy. You don't want to end up being one of those people caught unknowingly with drugs and executed.

Ya man you kinda of need to strike a balance between cost, risk, and comfortability. Dropping 550$ to get to Taiwan on a comforatable flight in 15-20 hours seems pretty good compared to being an indentured servant to a Taiwanese fishing vessel. All sleeping on rice sacks and getting leftover grissle to eat.
