I find the whole scientologist thing to be so completely played out. If the movie looks good then go see it.
I'm pleasantly surprised that people are saying Hancock was good. I'll probably check it out now.
It's certainly not played out: as long as Scientology is scheming millions and millions of dollars every year out of not only rich celebrities, but also more working-class idiots who have been duped, then it'll still be relevant.
It's never "played out" that an organization is a vicious, predatory collection of scumbags founded by a liar who explicitly vowed that if he ever wanted to be rich, he'd found a religion.
That said, I see no reason not to watch a movie with an actor who is scientologist, any more than it's appropriate to not see another movie because a cast-member is a member of some other religion.
Besides, I don't see a scenario where you only have $10 available across like 2-3 weeks.
oh i'm glad you're planning my budget for me.
honestly guys, if you're all gonna cry so much about it, maybe i'll get it on netflix when it comes out, but i'm just not interested in the movie for a number of reasons, so i'm not going to blow ten bucks on it when there are way better things to save my money for this summer.
I saw Hancock earlier today and I loved it. There were some bad parts, but I will definitely pick up an unrated blu-ray if/when they come out with one.
I really, really liked how they did the ending. And Servo, if you won't see it because Will Smith might be a scientologist, you are a douchebag
keith you love lots of bad things
your opinion on something with will smith in it has got to be biased somewhat

As I said, there were some bad parts (usually the comedy that didn't involve Will Smith), but I still really liked it. Not even my "oh this is bad but whatever" liking, I don't really see why it has like a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes

pretty clever, sars_boy
That is a pretty grievous attack on your credibility...
Keith is right, it's Champions Online, based on Champions the role-playing game.
Whoa now, what? For serious? Because Champions is pretty much the best tabletop pnp superhero roleplaying game, if they make the character creation anything like that then it's a must-buy for me.

Holy shit, I wonder how similar it's going to be.
I've never played the PnP but supposedly Champions online is a completely open system now. No classes, just powers to pick from. It sounds like the more powerful you make one type of pwoer the more weaknesses you have to give yourself, or something. There hasn't been much details.
We do know it has power customization, at least with the color of the powers (and maybe animation origin), and you can choose your characters walking animation. Want to walk on all fours? Do it. The costume creation sounds disgustingly deep. Each costume piece can have three different colors on it. You can pick the type of design that is on it, like CoH, but you can also pick the material and even what type of bump mapping is on it. I think it will take me 6 months to design my first character.

Yeah, that's pretty much how the pnp works. There's like 10 different stats, about 30 different powers, lots of power modifiers, about 50 skills, and everything is variable in power depending on the points you put into it...it's pretty fucking open to customization. They're obviously going to have to pare it down for the game, but using any of it at all has me fucking stoked.

Saw Hancock over the weekend and it was okay. Not mindblowingly great, but also not 30% rotten. It really does feel like they had two really awesome ideas, and decided the best way to approach them was to just squish them together and see what happened.
I mean, the whole idea of an asshole superhero is something they could have really done something with, as I liked Smith in the role but kept wishing he was just more of a jerk.
And the whole second half reminded me of a bit like Powers. Too bad it's dripping with way too much melodrama.

Eh, I'm in the same boat. I should really be saving my money, and that $10 is better spent in Dark Knight/Hellboy II.
Why does Mary Jane tell Peter she's getting married in a church? Is there suppose to be some meaning behind that?
Earlier in that conversation Peter tells her he always imagined her getting married outside on a hill, undecided on who her groom would be. The conversation takes a turn for the worse and she throws the, "I'm getting married in a church," thing in his face.

it has a 72% from the community on rottentomatoes. but shit, wanted has a 72 from critics and an 80 from the community and that was one of the worst movies i have ever watched, so who knows.
I liked Hancock. My only real complaint was that it seemed to skip along a little too briskly; I'd have liked to see more focus on Hancock as a proper superhero, and a little more information in regards to his origin. But I remember hearing a lot of stuff was cut for the theatrical version, so that could explain the fast pace.
I felt like it lacked a memorable villain too, but given the more grounded setting, it would have been difficult to give him a real comic-booky archenemy that would be a credible threat.
Wife and I just got back from seeing Hancock and we both liked it. Didn't blow us away but it was solid enough. I didn't like how it seemed to be a comedy for the first half and an action drama for the last. I'm all for movies that mix genres together but I want it mixed throughout the entire film. It kind of felt like two different movies for that reason. It will be interesting to see the director's cut, that is for sure.

shaun of the dead was the same way.
hilarious, then straight horror, then a little comedy to finish it up.

Er...no it wasn't. Some of the comedy in Shaun is a little subtle (references to some fairly obscure films etc) but it's there all the way through. You tell me one scene in that film that's straight horror and you might have a point, but I'm struggling to think of one.
If the Charlize Theron was advertised as part of the premise, rather than just a drunk asshole super hero trying to change, I would have enjoyed it more. I came to watch that movie, not the superhero movie about immortal god pairs and their adventures. It felt weird and carried a lot of baggage because now they're thousands of years old and there's all this vague history to it. They could have just put the part where she throws him into the fridge and threatens him in the trailer/commercials, it wouldn't have felt like such an awkward twist.

Some of us like being surprised by movies.
Frankly, I haven't seen Handcock yet (but I accidentally spoiled the entire movie for myself a while ago, so I know the twists), and I like the idea that you get to the movie and there's something more than what was in the trailers.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want a complete shift: if I go to a comedy, don't try to make me cry, and if I go to a drama, don't try and by silly, etc. The twist in Hancock, on the other hand, sounds relatively organic to the trailer's premise.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but just that there are different tastes in how people want to be 'sold' on a movie.
Man, Hancock was a mess. The whole last half was disjointed and silly as heck. The only redeeming part of the 3rd act was the "Tell me you did not" scene.

All the stuff with the group's last stand at the bar, and each of the ensuing deaths, all felt pretty much like straight horror/drama.

particularly the bit where
shaun's mom is turning and the glasses jerk wants to shoot her and shaun is crying and begging them not to shoot his mom. that part always makes me
There is plenty of comedy in there too. It's not like it goes to straight horror with no jokes what so ever. It just gets darker as you get to the pointy end at the Pub.
Also, anyone who enjoyed Shaun of the Dead owes it to themselves to watch both series of "Spaced".
you are correct, sir!
i met nick frost and simon pegg and edgar wright at a thing for hot fuzz when it came out (a double feature of that and bullitt, which remains one of the most fun nights i've ever had at the movies) and they're all crazy nice. i told them i liked spaced, and i got their autograph. Unfortunately the only thing i had on me was a copy of the autobiography of malcom x, so now it's signed by the guys who made shaun of the dead
