First of all I live in the United States. This morning, I woke up and listened to some voicemails from my fiancee. Apparently her mother told her a Carbon Footprint Tax is being implemented, that it would cost x amount more money, that we would't get to vote on it, etc etc. At first I was a little concerned, seeing as we are getting married this year and the thought of paying more money isn't great, but actually, with our living situation and vehicles, it probably wouldn't be too bad.
But the real question is, is a tax like this even being put into effect? I have heard the idea thrown back and forth before, but seeing as how her mom put it, it is going to happen, apparently soon. I did a quick google search and didn't see anything, so whats going on?
The only carbon tax that will be put in to place in the near future is on companies. No one would dare touch consumers first, because they have to be eased into it by attacking the "evil" corporations first. Once everyone is okay with it being real, they'll move on to taxing the average joe. Much like income tax.
What people don't seem to realize is that when you tax corporations, they don't really pay it. It is passed on to the consumer in higher pricing good, outsourced jobs, or migration of company headquarters.
So to answer your question... not just yet. Lieberman-Warner are still pushing their idea.
P.S. It is unlikely that they'll call it a tax either. It will probably be a cap and trade program.
Your mother-in-law is one of those retarded people who believes everything she reads on the internet, or believes everything told to her by someone who read it on the internet.
