Harvest Moon isn't what it used to be. The NES version was the best of the bunch but over time it seems to be straying away from the originality of the games. I will put my favorite games in order from favorite to least.

    Harvest Moon.
    Harvest Moon: Back To Nature.
    Harvest Moon: Save The Homeland.
    Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.
    Harvest Moon: 64.
Harvest Moon: Friends Of Mineral Town.
Harvest Moon: More Friends Of Mineral Town.
    Harvest Moon: DS.
    Harvest Moon: GB
    Harvest Moon: 2
    Harvest Moon: 3

I have played more but those are the ones I have played the most.

the only problem I have with the girl version is that all the male suitors look like douchebags, so I have no desire to bother with courting one of them.

I was reading this post the other day and then it dawned on me; this is close to the reason why I can't stomach playing the girls version of any HM game. It's not some pent up homophobia nor a fear of identifying myself with a female avatar, oh no. I'm trained too well to hate the romantic rivals. I'm trained not to like these guys.

Though I wouldn't need any training to hate Rick in FoMT. What a douche. Complete turn around from his role as a bumbling inventor in HM64, he becomes a raging over protective dick in FoMT.

It seems that the only ones that like the female versions are well...females. But they also play the male versions. So I think that deep in the male mind, we are all homophobic.

So can anyone sell me on why to by HMDS Cute instead of Animal Crossing?

Edit: Haven't played a HM since the Game Boy Color days.

Because Animal Crossing gets boring after fifteen minutes and punishes you for not playing whereas Harvest Moon will last AT LEAST a month, and will allow you to pick it back up whenever you feel like it without finding that all of the villagers have left and your farm is covered in weeds and trash.

There is no NES version. Also having StH that high on the list is a borderline hate crime.

After reading this entire thread, I've requested Friends of Mineral Town from the Goozex trading site. I've never played a Harvest Moon game before, but this one seems to be recommended most by you folk. Oh god, I can't wait till someone offers it to meeee. :D

This might take awhile, as I'd imagine it might be pretty hard to get someone to give it up.

Yeah, I was thinking that in the back of my mind. There are three people who have it listed, but on hold. I've got my fingers crossed that one of them is insane. ;-)

This would be true for me as well until I realized that I was wrong. I had, in fact, beaten MM with a female.

However I did marry Jamie that time to get the disapointing ending, so it's basically a moot point. :P

Rune Factory, for me, opened up once I expanded my house and could smith & craft items.

That's when I started hitting a frenzy of activity. Then I beat the game. Then I thought about it and developed an annoyance that I was spending the majority of my day watering/harvesting plants when I had better shit to do like gather resources. Then over the course of a few days while playing it between calls at work the annoyance, it became intolerable.

You're doing it wrong. You should capture and train some monsters to do all the watering/harvesting for you, then you get to spend all your time exploring.

This. But they are probably talking about how you also need to grow in dungeons to advance later.

Yup, I never touched my main field again once I learned about the monster training.

What killed me after beating the game was trying to maintain all my fields in the caves. And by all my fields I mean just about every field in every cave.

The real pimp thing to do in Rune Factory is after you've unlocked every cave (and beaten the game, I suppose) is to just plant Phantom crops on every single possible space in the various caves. Took me the better part of a week.

I think one of them is the Major's favorite item so it wasn't for nothing.

After I had all friendship and all hearts up to ten is when I finally quit.

Of course you can have your own opinion! It's a free world!

I bet we could find two maybe three other people in this forum who liked StH.

It's a wonderful thing after all.

For those playing along at home, yes, this is the mysterious RF Wii.

Scheduled for a TBA release in Japan. This will put Natsume a good handful of games back from localizing all of the HM and spinoff titles.
