Dad's Laptop, RAM, and Me

Ok, my father wants to install a program on his laptop, but he doesn't have the minimum specs for it RAM-wise. I figured I could just hop on Newegg and get some, but it seems as if there are a ton of different RAM types out there, even for laptops. It's been a long time since I've built a machine and have really been out of the loop for a while. I'm basically trying to figure out which type of RAM he needs.

He has an HP Pavillion zd8000. As you can imagine, HP zd8000 RAM hasn't been the most helpful search in google. So, people of PA, can you all help me figure out what type of RAM he needs (or if all of it will work the same)?

Your dad doesn't actually have a zd8000 that is his model series. Look carefully on the back on his computer on the serial number sticker and look for something like zd8050us or something like that.

Here are some sites to find some ram:
    http://memoryx.com/
    http://www2.pny.com/homepage.aspx

And here is the hp page with all the models, you can read their tech specs once you have chosen the right model:

    http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-001&h_query=zd8000

If you don't want to order online, make sure to take a print out with you to the store so they know exactly what you want.

you can also use a program called cpu-z (google it) and it will tell you exactly what kind of ram you have.

Yeah, cpu-z or PC Wizard (they're the same folks) are great. It will also tell you the max module size, which is important on older laptops (no need to spend more money on 1gb sticks if it's only going to recognize 512mb per slot).

Crucial has an online scan tool as well, so you don't need to install extra software. It'll also tell you how many free slots you've got.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Thanks, I'll do this as soon as I get in. This seems like it would be the easiest method.

    Thanks for the help, all.
