The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The topic is pretty simple. I may get to meet with Gamestop CEO this weekend. If you could say one thing to him, what would it be? I will pick one from the thread to say to Mr. Fontaine on behalf of G&T. If I don't end up meeting him, I will have my boss pass on the "one thing" in my stead.
Stop opening new games, letting employees take them home to sample them, then selling them to someone as new. I do not want, nor will I ever want, to pay for a brand new game to find it's actually been opened. That's why i don't buy display items FOR A DISCOUNT at other stores.
How can you say that without including a pic? For shame. I'm probably going to go with the PC/Steam angle on my own at some point, so count your opinions included SithDrummer.
I'd tell him to use some of his ridiculous profits to fund indie devs and release their shit either cheap or free through GameStop as well as Xbox Live with limited advertising. It would pay for itself if the games were good enough and it would alleviate some of their satanic corporate image. They could sweeten deals and pre-orders with 'not only do you get a magazine but you get THIS' or make like a 'Game of teh Month' club giving members a fun free indie game. Anything, really, to make it look like their priority is games or gamers instead of $$$$$$.
His business model is ultimately hurting the industry and, in the long haul, GameStop. The preorder bullshit intentionally drives sales towards used games, even within days or weeks of a game's release. This lessens profits on new releases, which sends the message to publishers that their games aren't selling well even if they are.

What the FUCK are you talking about?
Pre-orders give money DIRECTLY to publishers/developers.
The industry, as it currently exists, COULD NOT survive without Gamestop and its ilk. If they were gone, all you'd have left is Madden and GTA. There'd be no market for riskier titles.
Evander you are wrong. The used game market is terrible for the industry.
Not at all.
Developers/publishers just like to bitch because they don't directly get a piece of the pie, but they are NOT actually being hurt by it.
And without it there would be no Gamestop, which WOULD hurt them.
Seriousoly, though. I hope that EVERYONE who bitches about used games pre-orders all of their purchases, because pre-ordering is the only way to ensure a 1:1 ratio between games purchased in store and games ordered from a distributor. When you just buy a new game off the shelf, the developer gets ZERO dollars, because that copy has already been sold to the store previously, and the store DOES NOT re-order on a 1:1 ratio.
Used markets exist with ALL MANNER of products; why are video games some how special?
yeah really. the pre order system is designed to drive people to purchase USED instead
And the Bush administration caused September 11th?
Seriously, you're free to believe in your conspiracy theories, but don't state them as fact.

What can you possibly say that will penetrate a massive wall of used game profits?
Not that profit is BAD, mind you, it's what a company does.
But when you're surrounded by a protective wall of money, it muffles the cries of the anguished gamers done wrong, and instead sounds like a chorus of people saying "you're doing everything right, please keep selling us abused products and pitching your discount card and other special offers to us at every opportunity".
I think GameStop is a lost cause anyway. For most of us offended by their policies, it doesn't matter because we have other (more preferred) methods of shopping anyway.
The three stores in my area either don't carry the type of games that I play (PC games) or they can't be relied on to have the titles in stock that I want (DS games). So I don't bother.
Where do you see videogames heading in the next 5-10 years, and where to you see your stores going in 5-10 years.
Hey everyone else is bitching (not that there is anything wrong with that), I figured I would through out a question. Though some may not value his opinion, I think it would be interesting to see what he thinks.

Gamestop is actually on a REAL "customer experience" kick right now. Stores are actually ranked based on responses to customer experience surveys.
The key is that they are looking for the issues that matter to the mainstream of consumers; not to small groups on the fringes, especially when those concerns go against what the mainstream wants (The mainstream LOVES the used market; they don't want to see it done away with.)
Seriously though, folks, if Gamestop wasn't necessary for the industry then why don't all of these developers and publishers being hurt stop selling their games there? If they could do just as good, or better, without them, then why don't they?
Instead they spend EXTRA money on promotions that work WITH Gamestop.

Well as a matter of fact they did in a way.
And also
"hey do you have game X?"
"did you preorder?"
"no"
"then no, but we have the used copy for $5 less over here"
That only happens when a game sucks so bad that folks are trading it in within the first two days that it is out (pre-orders are only held for 48 hours)
If a game sucks that bad, then used game sales are the LEAST of the developer's worries.

And then tell him to get a haircut.
Or perhaps 7 billion?
Fuck your couch.
(tell him the new ad campaign is stupid)
Maybe an exploding high five.
About the haircut thing.
Damn hippy.
I can dream.

and sell the one copy for a discount because it is no longer new.
never ever sell an opened game as new. if it has been opened, but not sold yet, discount it and label it as opened.
only let employees take home games that have been traded in (used)
Infinity Mog 21 and over Free Company Sargatanas Server. Recruitment currently closed.
Seriously, this will be to the benefit of EVERYONE. A specialty store just doesn't work when you are hiring minimum wage folks who don't care.
This is a good one. Staff that gives a shit about their well-paid job will do a better job for the customer.

Until they rampage and kill us all...
and USED is not good for devs/pubs
and the market could so survive without EBstop. I get all my riskiey titles at BB or online (amazon anyone) anyways.
