I'm trying to log into my an FTP server that I have set up over a local network. The server is running OSX 10.4, using the standard FTP sharing built into the OS. I can connect to the server using STFP, but attempts to connect via FTP time out without fail. I don't have any firewalls turned on, and as far as I can tell there shouldn't be any issues with the router, either (Netgear WNR834B, if it matters). Are there any troubleshooting steps that I can take to find out exactly where the packets are getting lost? The machine I'm trying to connect with is running 10.5, if it matters. Thanks!
[Edit] I tried FTP over a crossover cable, and it works. The router is definately blocking the connection somehow, but I still don't know why it would block anything that is entirely over the local network.
I don't think the router would block it. Try some more troubleshooting, like try to telnet into the FTP port. Open up terminal and type 'telnet (SERVER IP) 21', see what you get there.
SFTP runs on the same port as SSH, so it would be port 22, but I would think if you router is blocking FTP, it would block SSH\SFTP as well.
