Despite knowing that it's usually a bad idea, I spent 2 hours on the phone with my dad yesterday trying to get his new sony video camera working with his with video editing software of choice (Pinnacle Studio 11).

In the end, I had him

- update his directX (via the downloader from microsoft.com)
- install .net 2.0 (from microsoft again)
- install newest ati drivers / catalyst control center (from ati.amd.com)
- patch the pinnacle software (from pinnaclesys.com)

This mostly seemed to fix the problems, but still ending up with desynched audio/video (without giving any errors, I could not find a reason for this).

However, just now he called me in panic: His PC doesn't boot anymore into windows, or in safe mode. He was formatting a DVD rewrittable when he got a system error, and the message that windows was restarting. It restarted, but just after the Windows XP logo comes on, it restarts, and goes to the "Windows has not booted correctly menu, do you wish to boot normal/safe mode/last known working configuration etcet menu". None of these options seem to work.

He is afraid he got a virus from installing the patches (IE warned him the pinnaclesys.com patch was "unsafe", but I really dont think that's the issue.

What would be the best path towards recovering the system? (He has an XP disc and can get into the recovery console there, but I have no experience with that).
