    MGS4 bundle get!

Went to a 24/7 Walmart and got it without any real problems or obnoxious lines. Almost didn't get it though. I found a clerk and asked him about the bundle, he told me that they were waiting 'til 7am to sell. No biggie. So I started to make my way out when I heard a couple people by the main entrance/exit saying that they heard they'd be selling them at the front checkout. I looked at my watch and it was about 11:45pm, so I figured I may as well wait a bit to see if it was true. Lo and behold, the manager opened up a lane just for MGS4 at the checkout 15 minutes later. So I'm glad I stuck around a bit longer. I'm also glad I don't have to get up early and waste half my day off driving around the god damned city looking for the bundle now too.

Unfortunately for some people, they left immediately when they were told it wasn't being sold until 7am. =/

At the Wal-Mart I went to, we had to convince the worker to go get the bundles from the security case in back for us. There were like 3 people (who were there for the gift card deal), so we all ended up checking out at about 12:45.

    MGS4 80gig Bundle Secured!

2 bundles? Ouch. The Wal-Mart I went said they got 11 in. I only saw three being brought out to the registers so I don't know how true that is.

As I walked out I heard to people talking about buying the bundle. I told them they only got two in stock and they looked at me and the other guy with the bundle beside me and said, "FUCK!" and left.

To those of you who have already been to midnight releases and such, what does the demand look like? I didn't manage to secure a preorder for the bundle, so I'm wondering if I can just show up at a Target tomorrow morning a little while before they open, or if this is just wii-level-frenzy (i.e., don't bother).

Oh, and for those of you out there who can stand to wait a few days longer, Newegg seems to be selling the bundle as well. It's been in and out of stock when I've checked today, but it'll probably get back in stock soon if you can wait over the weekend. Should've bought one from them, but I'm just too impatient I guess.

I live in a very gaming averse town, and there was nobody at our Walmart. I think there is a correlation behind that. I'm going to check in the morning... if only to stare at the bundles I can't have. I'm guessing they'll be there for a while however. Like I said, nobody in my town gives a crap about the latest gadgets.

Maybe I can convince my dad to want Blu-ray bad enough to get it.

Edit: Oh wait father's day is coming up. PERFECT :D

It'll be the bundle 'from now on', but who knows if they'll be making more than the limited supply they have right now...And for how long...

I'm happy mine is on it's way from Circuit City and will be here tomorrow. Nothing to worry about...except for maybe FedEx not wanting to bring it to the apt office and me having to wait until I can sign for it...but if they do that, I'm going to yell up a storm at them...

Just wanted to ask here just to make sure (You can never be too sure).

Does the PS3's slot drive have the same problem as the 360's tray drive when running the console vertically? Is the general rule of thumb still to run the console horizontally?

I ask because I'm actually running out of space on my media counter, and running the 360 horizontally is taking up most of the surface area (I've got all three consoles hooked up. Mighty person, or sad excuse of a human? You be the judge!).

Yes, if only because running it vertically makes it look awkward. The only reason to do so is if you're using the built-in wireless, as the antenna is located at the right side and has poor reception.

Just make more room or buy a couple entertainment towers. Embrace your pathetic digitally focused life!

    Don't freak out. Heh.

The reason I asked was because of the problems the 360's drive has with grinding discs. My paranoid self just wanted to double check if the same problem existed with the PS3's slot loading drive, heh.

There's no risk of disc-eating. Worst you can do with the PS3 vertical is put a disc in upside-down.

That or knock it ass over teakettle while running, which will fuck something up.

its not so much doubting the awesomeness of a BT remote... its the fact that every other remote (read, universal) WON"T work with it.

and the PS3 remote SUCKS. Sure, it has all the handy buttons, but the button placement is awkward, and the lack of lighting on it really sucks.

Try using fast forward, then play, in a darkened room watching blueray... see how many times you hit 'chapter skip' instead.

Even now the vast array of universal remotes, such as my lovely and hundreds-of-dollars Logitech Harmony, don't use Bluetooth.

I've found a hardware hack for $100 to fix this problem, or $10 if you don't want a silly feature like power on and off, but this is pretty dumb for a piece of hardware that wants to be a big player in the home theatre scene.

Edit: and i get that this is old news, but I just became interested in the PS3 scene and since its not much discussed anymore it flew under my radar.

This is the device to fix the problem: http://www.schmartstuff.com/ps3irpr3.html

Yeah.. IR2BT is hands down regarded as the best solution to the problem... but i would rather not spend another $100 on top of my harmony One cost just to do it.

When i get sick of using a seperate remote to control volume, i just might consider it

the sony BT remote is horrible, but cheap.

I prefer to use the normal ps3 controller. The only problem I have is that the analog L2 / R2 buttons are pretty sensitive.. so you have to be careful when putting it down, lest you make the movie skip ahead.

Is it ok this time to leave the Master Switch flipped on with the unit on Standby?

Just got my PS3 today, have a few observations/questions.

The system is alittle louder then I hoped for. It's not as loud as the PS2(original pre-slim) or the 360, but I think it is louder then the xbox, and defiantly louder then the wii. Not a huge deal, but I noticed it doesn't idle down much, if at all, when it's just sitting there playing dvds. Alittle disappointed in that regard.

Holy shit this thing loves dust. I think if my playstation 3 every broke, I would use it as a heavy replacement for a swifter.

The dvd player is night and day compared to the 360, way better in every regard.

I tested it out first on my brother's hd then moved it over to my sd. I was freaking out when it didn't work initially, but apparently you need to hold the power (while the system is off) and it will beep twice to reset the system settings. Had to google this as it wasn't in the manual, that I could find, not the greatest design by sony here.

Looks like crap at SD, it's not unplayable, but I think I can't go back to sd after playing my brothers 360 at hd for so long (used to live with him when I lived at home). I had to go on amazon and finally buy an hdtv tonight. It's funny, because the Wii never bothered me at SD.

Is there any alternative bluetooth remotes to the sony one? I read the discussion on the IR to bluetooth device, but are there any other native bluetooth remotes out there?

Can you charge the controller when the system is in standby? There are no lights on it to indicate a charging process, so I assumed no.

I loaded up my PS2 memory cards fine with the memory card reader, however my PS1 cards refuse to read. I suspect it is because they are non-sony cards, despite being the standard size. Any work arounds for this? I don't really care, but my girlfriend is going to be pissed because she is mid way through Legend of Dragoon (I think that's at least 30 hours).

I was also messing around with the PS2 compatibly and I'm having issues with the right analogue stick acting crazy. It treats it like it's always being pressed/spinned. This happened in multiple games, and I tried turning the controller on and off to recalibrate but no luck. Is this a known issue?

Any other misc tricks and tips for the PS3?

I was able to get the bundle last night, the wife still gives me the same smile, and its OK. I have things mostly set up, I have been playing around with stuff, just now I started up a remote play with my PSP, and played a bit of FFVIII, this feature will be really really cool I think.

I started off playing untold legends, began realizing why I got it so cheap.

I want to start playing MGS4, but I have never played the series before, not sure if going backwards in the series is a good idea.

I downloaded Pain but then it wanted to an update, and 3% into it it locked up, and now I cannot get it to redownload, I wonder if I should delete pain and redownload it again.

All in all I am happy with the purchase, as long as I can get my PC and the PS3 to talk nicely, it will be a great media player.

Top o' the line if you care about power on & off. there are some cheaper solutions if you just want all other controls. I don't recommend them though.
Can you charge the controller when the system is in standby? There are no lights on it to indicate a charging process, so I assumed no.

Apparently one of the more recent FW updates turned off the power to the USB ports while the PS3 is on standby or sleeping. The charge cord is a standard USB --> mini USB .. so anything with a USB port will work. Personally, I use my TivoHD which is right next to it to charge it full time.
Any other misc tricks and tips for the PS3?

Get HD :) Check out the PSN .. a good majority of the download games are awesomesauce. Super stardust, Pixeljunk monsters, etc. Personally I am craving a few more puzzle games.. or the price to be a bit cheaper... but so far everything has been worth it (Except fucking Rampart )

If you delve into the world of BlueRay.. make sure the ps3 is set to output Linear PCM rather then bitstream.

This is how I felt, and is the reason I now own a HDTV. My parents actually got me the 60Gig at launch as a present, because of them, I had to go out and get the upgrade on the TV.... just finished paying that bitch off the other day.

This happened in multiple games, and I tried turning the controller on and off to recalibrate but no luck. Is this a known issue?
Never had an issue, which titles you trying to play?

Any other misc tricks and tips for the PS3?
I'm not sure what the default feature is on the current PS3's, but its always good to dig around through the settings. I turned off Auto Disc boot, sometimes I'm just turning on my PS3 to listen to music, not play what ever is in the drive.

    I limed for reply.

If you're using HDMI make sure that 'Super White' and 'RGB Full Range' are turned on. It makes a big difference.

Edit: If there isn't a 'Master List' of PA Forum PSN Usernames perhaps we should make one?

This. Seriously. Out of the box, the PS3 seems a bit washed out on HDMI, but once you change these options under Screen Settings, the colors and contrast are so much better.
