This. Seriously. Out of the box, the PS3 seems a bit washed out on HDMI, but once you change these options under Screen Settings, the colors and contrast are so much better.

Doesn't this depend on if the source and hardware support it (super white) and how you are hooked up, via DVI / HDMI (rgb range) ?

It might but all I know is I plugged in my PS3 with the HDMI cable and initially the XMB looked a little washed out. I went in and switched those two options and the colors seemed better and the contrast range certainly was improved. Of course, this may just be because of my set-up, so YMMV, but it can't hurt to toy around with the Screen Settings if you have a HDTV.

Full RGB range is 0-255 .. which is what the pc uses .. whereas normal rgb for recorded video is 16-235.. if the source vid you are playing doesn't have that missing RGB info, then its useless.

The XBM might look better, does does anything else ?

    Yes...

My friend didnt touch any of his settings, makes black look grey. RockBand looked all washed out. Changed the settings, and the colors popped oh so much more.

Problem there is that colors aren't really supposed to 'pop', they're supposed to look natural. That might be fine for video games, but for movies and the like you want to get as close to natural colors and contrast as possible. Also, as far as setting RGB to full, it'll depend on the tv but some (maybe most?) will cause black crush when set to full vs. limited. Black crush is when you loose details in shadows. So you get more 'pop' from setting it to full but end up loosing detail in the end.

I've been screwing with the settings since I set up my PS3 yesterday and I noticed that RGB Full Range looks great for games and animation, but like others have said you lose details in the shadows which I've noticed with live action shows and movies (popped in Batman Begins and it was pure black with no details in the shadows).

So I just picked up the MGS4 bundle yesterday and started playing through MGS3 from the essentials collection. The emulation seems pretty good, but I'm being plagued by save problems. When I try to save to an internal memory card I made in the PS3 dash, the game says something about "No data was found" after trying to save. This happens randomly, and then when I'm looking at the data in the dash, it has 'corrupted data'. Sometimes I can load it without problems anyway once I'm in game.

Is this a sign of something bad going on? I've read that sometimes PS3s just corrupt save files for no reason, but I'm wondering if this is just a PS2 BC issue, and what would be the best way to get around it.

it's a problem i had with mgs3 and only mgs3. question: have you updated to firmware 2.3 yet? if not, do that immediately because it fixed my mgs3 save problems completely - even the old data that had been 'corrupt' started to work fine, and i finished the game without a hitch

I haven't tried my MGS3 Subsistence yet, but it seems like a backwards compatibility issue, there are apparently other issues too. Check out the compatibility status on the Playstation site.

I've updated to the latest available firmware, according to my PS3. I don't know if it's possible to apply the update and not have it 'take', but some of the issues I've seen are exactly like the ones described on the PS3 BC page that are supposedly 'resolved'.

Then again, I can load the 'corrupted' games just fine so far? Maybe it's not really anything more than a naming or file recognition glitch? I could deal with it, so long as it doesn't mess with my MGS4 saves when I finish this game and get to that point...

I picked up the 80gig today, I am very happy.

I am not quite sure if this should be in a thread about The Orange Box, or in this.. but I shall ask it here!
I haven't played The Orange Box at all, because my computer is pretty crappy, but now that I have a PS3 I was thinking about picking it up. I'd really like to play Portal and the other games but I've heard that it's not very good on the PS3 (Unless they've changed that now??). I don't THINK I would mind Team Fortress being a little wonky, but I also don't want to spend my money on something that is complete crap.

Could anyone that has the Orange Box give me some advice?

I have a bt headset. My EB Games just got a used copy of Warhawk, I'm so tempted. The thing is, I want to wait till PSN cards come out and the expansions are bundled cheaper (I can't remember where I heard this, but I think it was confirmed- both for $7.99 or something). But it's not that easy to find, and that copy might already have been sold...

I think I need to head over there tomorrow.

Ok, so it appears the my PS3 is dying. Yesterday I had trouble with MGS4 around the end of Act 3/Start of Act 4, I figured it might be just a bad game disc.
However, occasionally when trying to start up other games (GTA4, Lego Indy, Heavenly Sword & DMC4) I would get a 80010514 error.
So I tried a full system restore and the problem remains, worse still trying to install GTA4 failed a couple of times (it eventually worked) and DMC4 won't get beyond 25%.

It's a European 60 gig, and I know if I send it back to Sony I'll just get the 40 gig version sent back to me.
So, is there anyway I can fix this without sending it back? Replace the HDD maybe?

Are you sure you'd just get the 40 gig? I wouldn't think you would. I sent in my first chipped 60 gig here in the US when those weren't in stores anymore and I got back a chipped 60 gig. I'm pretty sure you'd get a 60 gig back.

I would hope so but the fact the PS3 picked my birthday to start this shit gives me the feeling my luck has run out.
Like I said if there is a way around this without sending it back, I'd like to explore that option first.
I should add that the PS3 was bought in November so it's still under warranty.

Personally, I'd just send it back to them. They know what they're doing and will be able to fix it far better, and you may void a warranty or something by messing with it. That said, I guess you could change the HDD. That won't void the warranty or anything, and I guess it does sound like an HDD problem anyway.

Huh. So for the first time I'm trying to put a comment up on PSN and it is the most infuriating thing I've ever tried to do. The buttons simply don't do what they say they do- I type a word, press triangle for space, and it erases the word. I type a word, press R1 or L1, and it erases the word. Backspace is square and I haven't touched it, yet I actually can't figure out a way to finish this word.

Is there a way to fix this other than using cell phone mode? Am I hitting a character limit I don't know about?

I'm going to hook up a keyboard at my first opportunity, but this is still really frustrating.

EDIT: Yup, character limit. Way to design, Sony.

I don't have Orange Box for the ps3. But from what I've heard the single player games all play pretty well, the only real issue is loading times. However I would write off Team Fortress, Valve does do any updates for it and I think the community is pretty damn small anyway. So yeah I would get it if you want to play the single player stuff and avoid it if you are mostly interested in the multiplayer.

This is my impression of the Orange Box as well. It gets knocked because the community is small and Valve really only cares about multiplayer on Windows. If you really want to play Half Life 2 & ep 1, and Portal, go for it. You may simply want to wait until you get a new computer, though, and pick it up then.

Is there any alternative bluetooth remotes to the sony one? I read the discussion on the IR to bluetooth device, but are there any other native bluetooth remotes out there?

Top o' the line if you care about power on & off. there are some cheaper solutions if you just want all other controls. I don't recommend them though.
Can you charge the controller when the system is in standby? There are no lights on it to indicate a charging process, so I assumed no.

Apparently one of the more recent FW updates turned off the power to the USB ports while the PS3 is on standby or sleeping. The charge cord is a standard USB --> mini USB .. so anything with a USB port will work. Personally, I use my TivoHD which is right next to it to charge it full time.
Any other misc tricks and tips for the PS3?

Get HD :) Check out the PSN .. a good majority of the download games are awesomesauce. Super stardust, Pixeljunk monsters, etc. Personally I am craving a few more puzzle games.. or the price to be a bit cheaper... but so far everything has been worth it (Except fucking Rampart )

If you delve into the world of BlueRay.. make sure the ps3 is set to output Linear PCM rather then bitstream.

Actually, with the HDMI connection to my TV, I need to leave it set to bitstream in order for my TV to recognize it as Dolby Digital. (Not that my TV can output true 5.1, but it does something to kinda fake it.)

I think this might be the right place to ask. I haven't read through the whole thread, so I'm not sure if this has already been answered, but..

I'm a new PS3 owner who bought one of the 80GB MGS4 bundles last week. I'm loving it so far, but every time I turn the console on or off, it disrupts my whole internet connection for a few seconds. It's not a huge problem or anything, but it is starting to get on my nerves.

I've tried to connect to the internet with both WiFi and the cable that came with the PS3, and both cause disconnections. Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

My router is a Linksys WRT54G with my PS3, my PC, and my Printer hooked up to it via cables. My Wii is also connected to it all the time over WiFi. (I'm starting to wonder if the Router might be the cause of the problem. I've had a bad history with Linsksys routers doing strange things a few months after purchasing them, so.)

    I had that router once.

I threw it out. I tried the open source firmware and it fixed some of the problems, but it was still unreliable for wireless internet.

So is the next big PS3 exclusive going to be Wipeout HD? Isn't that supposed to come out in a few months?

Next month actually on the 16th.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

Once this one dies I think I'm going to search for a different brand. I think this is the 4th or 5th one I've gone through. It's a lot like the stories of people who lost their 5th xbox to the RROD. I'm already to the point where I have to restart it every few days because the wireless stops working.

This is off-topic (or maybe not, since it could be related to my problem), but what's a better brand/model to buy?

Man, fuck those Linksys routers. I had one of their original 802.11b routers. I got over 5 years of service from it, but there was always something wrong that required fiddling with the settings. But never wrong enough to warrant replacement. I can't say what's currently the best, but I got a Buffalo router late last year and I find it to be much, much better than the Linksys in terms of being very reliable and trouble free. The downside of the Buffalo I have is that it does not do WPA2. But even WPA (AES not TKIP) is better than WEP.

Since I can't find the 80gb MGS bundle, I think I'm going with plan B: I ordered the MGS4 LE (the game, not the gray bundle) so I can have the fancy second disc with the separate movies (at a slightly higher res, according to someone from Kojima games who was on 1Up Yours) and I'll just eat shit and buy the 40gb PS3.
