remember, if the thing zonks out and you're desperate and out of warranty, at the very worst you can pay sony for the repair service. but my ps3 was out of warranty and they didn't even ask questions, they just fixed it
pretty much, yeah. i rang them up, told them the issue, maybe acted a little coy and uncertain when the whole "when did you buy it" question came up but i certainly didn't have to lie or argue my case. they paid for everything
Otherwise the repair is something like $150, and what they told me over the phone is "if we can't repair your PS3, then we would (because I asked if I would get a referb back when mine zonkd) replace it with a referb, but with an all new shell on the outside" ... just fyi.
Alright, PA, I need your collective advice. You seem to steer me wrong less often than most other sources.
I've decided to purchase a PS3. Madness to many of you, I know. I have also resolved to purchase this item from Best Buy as I've managed to accrue a fairly large sum in Best Buy gift cards. I've chosen it over the cheaper 360 because I simply can't bring myself to get over the RRoD issue. I know the more recent 360 revisions seem to have resolved the issue, but... I just don't want my console to die. Irrational, I know, but it's where I am.
Anyways, to the questions. I believe the PS3 comes with a one year warranty from Sony. Lovely. Best Buy also offers a three-year replacement plan for $59 (I think). Is such a plan worth getting? And if I do need to exchange it at Best Buy in a couple of years, what becomes of my downloaded games/DLC/horse armors/whatevers? What are opinions on here about such things?
Secondly, I'm stuck with a SD TV for the reasonably near future. Are there any cables that I should purchase that aren't included or should I be fine out of box?
to the guy asking about PS3 warranty and all that:
I've got the 360 and the PS3 and honestly I just get more use out of the PS3. The interface is tons better, the media functionality I get more use out of (mp3 usage + using a thumb drive to dump everything I want on the PS3 = win), and the exclusive games on the PS3 are the ones I get more play out of.
Anyways, your question relating to getting a Best Buy warranty. It can't hurt, but also the PS3 is far less likely to shit the bed on you, so if you can safely afford the 60 bucks for 3 years instead of the sony one, I'd say go with it just to be on the safe side. I mean, you could wind up getting the one PS3 that breaks down. yaknow?
As far as cables go, you get the red yellow and white cable with the PS3 so if you're using an SDTV then you won't need any other cable. The only thing is, on an SDTV, PS3 games do look really bad in comparison to the same game(s) in HD. I know that's an obvious thing, but really it's kinda a big difference. Admittedly it's more of a difference on PS3 than the 360.
as far as what happens with trophies/DLC etc.. you can have your ID handle on the PS3 deactivated should they need to fix it or send you a new system due to the warranty, so that when you recreate your handle on the new system/new HDD then you should be able to get back what you had. Also, with your handle + email addy + credit card info (for DLC purchases) you are allowed 5 instances of any DLC you get from PSN, so you can share the downloads with friends. In the instance you need to replace the HDD for defectiveness or any other reason (like, you're getting a bigger HDD or something) then deactivating your account will grant you the download back as if you had paid for it, but didn't DL it. It's their way of assuring the customer that you get your DLC back if the need arises.

I dunno if replacement plan is worth it on ps3. There isn't enough data out there on failure rates to tell you if its a good buy or not. I can tell you that ps3 repair from sony out of warranty is $150. (I didn't buy a plan, I'm a gambling man)
For anythning bought Sony gives you unlimited downloads to 5 ps3s. So if your ps3 dies, and best buy replaces it just log in with same psn id and redownload. (Also good for multiple machines in same house or to "share" with trusted friends) (The one exception to this is Singstar songs where you have to call and explain your ps3 died and they will allow you to redownload)
PS3 comes with composite cables and works with any ps2 cables you might have, so you should be set. (Though if your TV support S-video you may want to get that)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I'm not sure about how Best Buy works, but I bought my PS3 from GameStop and paid the extra cash for their warranty. It's a one time deal, but basically if anything happens to the PS3, then all you've got to do is take it in to the store and they give you a new one on the spot. After that, you've got to buy the warranty again (think it's like $60 bucks) but I've got through 2 so it's been pretty worth it.
Best Buy sells replacement plans and maintenance plans. If it's a replacement plan they just replace the broken item. I got a PSP replaced on the plan once. If it's only a maintenance plan it means they repair the item for you.
I'm the perfect person to answer this guys questions
So dude, I bought my 60G PS3 from BestBuy in Jan 07. I do believe they have different replacement plans (in terms of how long the replacement plan is good for; ie: 2 years or 3 years at different costs)
I also had purchased a 2 year replacement plan from them for several reasons. The most important reason is just incase the PS3 dies, easy to swap out and don't have to deal with mailing stuff in, etc. Secondly, with BestBuy, if you purchase this PS3 now priced at $399.99 and lets say before your 2 year replacement plan expires and you happen to swap it out (you can say many things to the customer service desk in the store like... its not loading as quickly, making funny noise, or w/e) if the price of the PS3 has dropped, BestBuy will not only replace your unit, but also give you the price difference in in-store credit.
So just last week my PS3 died. (I guess in a way it makes me kinda lucky, because my replacement plan was soon to expire) I took it back to BB, they replaced it with an 80G and also gave me a gift card good for $200. So I went ahead and used some of that gift card to purchase another 2 year replacement plan on this new 80G... so if it breaks I'm covered, but also, if the PS3 price drops again in the next 2 years, I should not only be able to get a new PS3 but the price difference.
OK as for PSN content. If you purchase a game/movie from the PlayStation Store, that content can be downloaded to 5 different PS3s (intended incase you have to swap out a PS3, Sony put the cap at 5, because most people won't ever have to go through that many) but once you download and activate that game to a PS3, if you ever have to clear space or reformat, you can download that content unlimited amount of times to that same PS3.
If you're going to be playing on a SDTV, the cables that come in the box should be fine.
I only have a PC monitor with VGA and DVI connections. Currently my 360 is connected to VGA and my PC to DVI. What solutions are available to me if I wanted to hook up a PS3 without having to connect it to my 12" SDTV? :P
Also I imagine that it would be prudent to wait for the launch of the 160GB this month before buying one?

Remove the PC Cable? Even then your monitor will need to support HDCP or use a HDFury or similar. I had the same problem, but my monitor has component inputs as well so I just ended up using those and setting for 1080i, I tried various switchers and kvms and they all reduced quality or made it to awkward to be worthwhile.
If anyone is interested in buying a PS3, I highly recommend doing the live.com 30% rebate on eBay purchases. That's how I just got my 60GB. Wound up being around $290 shipped after rebate.
Just go to live.com and search for something like "gold coin" and there should be a sponsored "Live cash back" link to eBay up top. Click there and you should have a 30% off banner in eBay. Applies to Buy It Now purchases only– just search for what you want and pay with Paypal. Rebate comes to your Paypal account in 60 days.
There's a maximum of $200 per rebate, maximum 6 rebates per eBay / live.com account.

Anyway, is replacing the HD on a PS3 pretty straightforward? Is there a handy guide somewhere you guys recommend, or do you recommend not messing with it?
Anyway, is replacing the HD on a PS3 pretty straightforward? Is there a handy guide somewhere you guys recommend, or do you recommend not messing with it?
It's easy, and I'm pretty sure there's a guide in the PS3 manual. If not, there's about 10 billion youtube videos showing how. There's basically no reason not to upgrade to a larger HD unless you are like me and are very lazy.

Nice, I'll likely do this once mine fills up a bit. After the PS3 purchase I'm a bit strapped for cash. Here's hoping they give more games the Greatest Hits treatment soon. I need Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank!
So as I understand it, HDCP protects both audio and video, so unless the device I'm sending it to supports HDCP, I won't get any video, no matter what HD connection I use. I can split out the audio on the AV cables and connect them to my speakers like I already do with the 360 but if I want HD video I need a new monitor.
So in order to get my PS3 up and running, I'll need to buy a new TV as well, unless I run in SD, correct? There's nothing that will allow me to convert HDMI to DVI and remove the HDCP requirement? If there were, would those devices be illegal/restricted at all?
EDIT: Looks like those devices are crazy expensive, so fuck that. I presume one of these fellows would work no problem, though? 360 through VGA, PS3 through component, spit it out through VGA and switch manually between the two. Would I get any video lag through this?

@vgreminders - Don't miss out on timed events in gaming! @gamefacts - Totally and utterly true gaming facts on the regular!
You might be able to use a straight hdmi to dvi converter. You would probably be restricted to 1080i or 720p and won't be able to upscale dvds though. Also the audio isn't a problem since you can set separate output for that.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
So wait, the fact that my monitor doesn't accept HDCP doesn't necessarily mean it won't accept video from the PS3's HDMI output? Does HDCP only apply to 1080p?

Oh hey also - if I borrowed a friend's PS3, when I return it would I be able to keep all of my information (saves, profile, etc.) on a USB key and keep it safe for when I got one of my own? Would I run into any problems with that?

Here's a question: WHERE THE FUCK CAN I GET AN MGS4 BUNDLE?! :P
Ok, now that my frustration is out of the way, I am annoyed beyond belief with Sony. I want a PS3 with PS2 B/C. Where's the best place to find one? eBay? Every time I check there, the prices are jacked PS2 B/C is very important for me as I don't have a PS2 anymore. Hard drive isn't an issue as you can obviously replace it. Any thoughts on where to get a PS3 with PS2 B/C?
I got this from avs forums, but I have been unable to verify this anywhere, so this maybe hearsay. If I had a hdmi-dvi adapter I would test this.
It was mentioned in the PS3 as a BD player thread that HDCP isn't applied to the HDMI output unless it's set to 1080p. Have you tried using 1080i through HDMI, and letting your TV deinterlace it to 1080p?
As far as profile, if you sign into psn whith your profile then your trophies will be saved on the sony server. All other data would need to be manually copied over 1 by 1 via usb flash drive or sd card or something. (There is a backup utility but I don't think you can just backup one profile.)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
That's interesting. I'd still have to fuck around with switchers but it gives me more options, for sure.
But yeah I've kinda given up on B/C. While PAL regions are even more SOL than elsewhere on the B/C front, I've found it ridiculously prohibitive to try and find a decent price on a B/C PS3.
To be fair, until right this second, I hadn't factored in the resale value of my PS2 as deductible from the price of a 60GB PS3, though, which makes me a fucking idiot.

Yup, MGS4 bundles are gone, as are any new PS3s with BC. If you really, really want one, you'll have to go to, you guessed it, ebay or craigslist and pay through the nose.
Honestly it would probably be easier to just buy a used PS2 at this point.
If the hdmi thing doesn't work this component to vga adapter gets pretty good ratings from reviews. Its $60 retail but you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

Argh, forget it. I'll just get a PS3 when I finally get an HDTV. I want BluRay more than PS2 playability. It just kills me that I'll never get to play MGS3, FFX, FFXII or God of War / 2 again without buying a PS2. Stupid Sony... they really fucked this one up, badly. All the greatness of the system has been cut so they can continue upping the HDD space and keeping the price consistant. Just kills me.

Actually, BC wasn't a huge expense; they cut it so people would stop buying PS2 games and buy more PS3 games.
No really, their execs said that in the Wall Street Journal.
Then again removing BC doesn't seem to have affected their overall sales, so I can't really blame them from a biz perspective. Their violent aversion to actual price drops is going to bite them on the ass now that the 360 is cheaper, though.

Amen, brother. I just caved in and bought a 60gb gamestop refurb online. Cost me about the same as most craigslist listings for a used one, but this way I don't have to worry about getting fucked over on the deal. As much.
Still would've much rather been able to buy new, but no. They had to go and gut the BC that they were strutting about when the console came out.

So just last week my PS3 died. So I went ahead and used some of that gift card to purchase another 2 year replacement plan on this new 80G... so if it breaks I'm covered, but also, if the PS3 price drops again in the next 2 years, I should not only be able to get a new PS3 but the price difference.

If you're going to be playing on a SDTV, the cables that come in the box should be fine.
If I try to upload SYS DATA the page just sits there. Do I have to export the game save a certain way or upload it in IE or what?
to generate the EXPORT file you have to manually save your game in the options, its not created by the autosave.
Also I imagine that it would be prudent to wait for the launch of the 160GB this month before buying one?

Yup, MGS4 bundles are gone, as are any new PS3s with BC. If you really, really want one, you'll have to go to, you guessed it, ebay or craigslist and pay through the nose.
Honestly it would probably be easier to just buy a used PS2 at this point.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
*sniffle*
Argh, forget it. I'll just get a PS3 when I finally get an HDTV. I want BluRay more than PS2 playability. It just kills me that I'll never get to play MGS3, FFX, FFXII or God of War / 2 again without buying a PS2. Stupid Sony... they really fucked this one up, badly. All the greatness of the system has been cut so they can continue upping the HDD space and keeping the price consistant. Just kills me.
I got one for less than what a PS3 game costs.
