Yeah theyve all been pre-owned systems, and all apparently tested fine at EB before they gave it to me.
I stopped reading that thread right there. Maybe there was another story.
Anyway, the lack of reliability of the early 360s would be a good reason to not buy one. But it isn't a good reason not to buy one of the more recent models nor is it a good reason to try and sell the one you have since I doubt you could get a good price for it. But if the OP can, more power to him.

I'm not sure if it's just my ps3 or if this is likely to happened to you with a 60 gig model, but my machine is not all that quiet.
I don't consider it a huge negative but I wanted to put that out there.
Variable: You may wanna check that out. I have a PS3, and have 3 friends with them, they are all virtually silent. Would hate for you to have a bad fan or something.

I'm thinking that your machine may have a hardware issue, because my 60 gig is nearly silent when it runs. Its fan is quieter than my PC fan, and much, much quieter than my 360.
My first PS3 was very, very loud after about 15 minutes, it would just suddenly sound like an airplane was preparing to take off. I returned it and thankfully this is one is very quiet (so far). Both were 40GB models, and you do hear of this problem occasionally around forums.
Normally I'd agree that selling a system for another one is a bad idea.
Except this isn't just a system, the 360 is more like a time bomb.
Ya know this is a good point. Normally I don't like to sell consoles either, but in the 360's case this might be a good idea. You gotta figure that in the future the quality can only improve so if you feel you are missing out being 360less you can buy a new one and at least you'll be getting a new unit (w warranty) and have improved the reliability, presumably it would use less power and be quieter too. (Though the 12x dvd drive will probably always be kinda noisy, its not just fan noise that makes the 360 loud)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

It's the same thing with mine Variable. I wouldn't consider it a hardware issue though. At least, not one that is worth trying to fix.
After some research, you'll find out that there's 2 different fans used in the ps3 models. The older one having more blades and straight, and the newer one having less blades but curved. There's a theory that the older fan ps3s are quieter, but I couldn't find any hard evidence of this after a ton of research. Even if it is true, if you replaced your ps3, chances are that you'll just get another ps3 with the newer fan.
Also, you gotta be wary when people state that something is "nearly silent". When I first got my ps3, and quickly replaced it for a 2nd ps3, I thought mine was not "so quiet, I couldn't even tell it was on" as I read on the internet. My iMac, now that is "so quiet, I couldn't even tell it was on". Compared to that, my ps3 was pretty loud.
So I asked my friend about his ps3 and he said his was really quiet. I brought my ps3 over to his house and found out that my ps3 was actually quieter than his. Then my friend called me crazy for wanting to exchange my ps3. So ya, don't believe everything you hear.
Also, I've found that the game you test it with makes a big difference. The first game I got was CoD4. The ps3 fan will kick in fast and stay running when playing that game, but with other games, it runs very quiet in comparison.
The PS3 library may seem lacking but the 360 has a year on it and the Wii...well the Wii gets 15 shovelware and 5 PS2 ports and a sequel for every original game on it. And 3 bowling games per quarter. And a boxing game. Weekly.
I can never understand this logic.
If the reason 360 has a better library is because it's been out a year longer, then 360 will always have a better library because it will always have been out a year longer.
You're having trouble understanding the logic because you've somehow read that I said it had better games when I didn't and was instead referring to the quantity of games.
In two years the 360 will probably have more games, yes. By your logic.
They will not however be necessarily better.
From what I've seen both PS3 and 360 seem to put out quality games at about the same percentage of total games. If an A game on one console is no better than an A game on a competing console, wouldn't the one with more good games be considered to have the stronger library?
I have both. 360 for exclusives, PS3 for everything else. Honestly I could live without the 360, but it was an impulse buy and fuck it... Halo 3 is pretty fun for a console shooter.
Why sell a system to get another, why not have both if you can? But if you're absolutely broke, sell the 360 to get the PS3... my PS3 gets more time, about 80 percent of my console time unless I go on a rockband run which is one of the few multiplatform games I bought for the 360... if I had bought that for the PS3 my 360 would never get played.

PS3: MistaCreepy::Steam: MistaCreepy::360: Dead and I don't feel like paying to fix it.
I debated the 360 very seriously..but the 'win' of blue ray sealed the deal for me... and the number of 'red rings of death'.
Being out of console gaming since the ps1 days (and i dipped a toe in with the xbox original) I was VERY impressed with the current PS3 library. Out of all the demos and games i rented, only 2 or 3 games really were absolute crap. (*cough* timshift *cough*)
My PS3 is silent as well, but after a long gaming session or movie watching, i can hear the fan kick on... to be fair, this ps3 is sitting on top of a tivoHD.. in a somewhat enclosed cabinet.
PS3 40gb, for a very attractive price.. it was a very good decision.
I've been deciding on which to pick up, 360 or ps3 but to the OP I would recommend waiting until June, rumors are that Microsoft and Sony are doing new SKU's then. Well actually its not a rumor with sony, but there is a rumor of another price drop for both systems.
Personally I am torn, I care more about the games that are exclusive for the 360, but the Ps3 has alot more to offer in terms of none game related stuff.
i just discovered stardust HD, and the new PS EYE 'games' are looking pretty fun... I am 100% happy with my ps3.
AFAIK, the new SKU for the ps3 is the PS3 + dual shock + metal gear solid.. which i think is costing the same as buying individually.. because at the price show, i will spend the same with getting them all.

If I was looking for JUST a video game console, it would be a hard decision. The advantage of Mass Effect and Bioshock is pretty strong if those games appeal to you. I was interested in them, but I generally have a low amount of interest in a game that's in 1st person, so I was truly torn. The fact that most big games were cross-platform didn't help. So the blu-ray thing really did prove to be the tipping point for me, to the point that I use it more for Netflix'd blu-ray movies than playing games.

Favorite download ever. If those pseye games are as cool as advertized let me know was kinda thinking about getting one or two. Also, if your into CCGs at all then definatly look into getting Eye of Judgment comes with the eye and is one of the most intresting and most well balanced card games I've seen, at least before they added the new cards.

I just bought pixel junk monsters.. and this might be my next full purchase. I wish they weren't 9.99 though, since they put out 'expansions' .. $9.99 is a pause for a little game.. $4.99 would be boughted SO hard.
I am looking into the PSEYE .. the new stuff at the store looks interesting for my daughter to play with (she is 4) .. she LOVES the duck tub game..
I took the sensible advice of people on this forum and chose not to sell my 360, but I haven't even plugged it in since January. I might as well just call it a Mass Effect machine, because that's all I ever played on it.
To be fair, my PS3 is essentially just a Rock Band machine at this point.
However, I don't think my interests are in the majority. I fell in love with Persona 3 and went on a Shin Megami Tensei buying spree, and will probably not pick up anything else this year other than Fallout 3 and maybe GTA4.

You can't counter with games that aren't out yet :P If you're looking to play video games, you obviously want a console that has games you could play the day you bought the console.
Like, I've got a PS3 and I'm interested in those titles when they do eventually come out. But I'm not going to persuade anyone based on "potential." That's a bad investment.
I think konami's servers are getting bitch slapped. I don't think I've ever seen a download go as slow as the MGO beta. EVER. Seriously, getting like a 1MB a minute.

I'm guessing you've never owned a modem? :P

I was a Sony fanboy for a long time. I bought the PS2 when it launched, and actually bought an XBOX when it launched as well, but returned it. I didn't like the machine, the controllers, or having to pay for online.
I got a PS3 shortly after launch, and have been in sort of a love/hate relationship with it lately. I bought Uncharted and couldn't put it down until I beat it *twice.* Ratchet was the same way, and I played a LOT of EoJ before i burned out on having to set it up all the time.
When Mass Effect and Bioshock came out, I lamented not having a 360. Last christmas, I finally caved and bought a used Elite. Since then, my PS3 has been woefully underused (save for MLB '08 The Show). The draw of achievements is much more potent than I thought it would be, and never underestimate the lure of a really good online system. As much as I dislike the company, XBL really knows what they're doing when it comes to online functionality. HOME promises to contend with XBL, but that's been a giant tease since it was announced at E3 2006. I keep hearing the open Beta is coming, but...
In the end, it really does all come down to the games, as it should. What I play(ed):
360 - Mass Effect, Bioshock, Carcassone, Catan, Viva Pinata
PS3 - Uncharted, Ratchet, EoJ, MLB The Show
There are great games that are multiplatform (CoD4, Orange Box, GTA IV, etc), and in the end, it all comes down to feel. Since I love online, I tend to err on the side of the 360 for now. When HOME finally launches, who knows.

I gotta say this is an excellent console war, really. Other than the PS3 still needing to flesh out its library a bit more and refine its online experience, things are pretty competitive. I ended up going Sony primarily because I'd rather die than not be able to play a Free.Radical game- I refer here to Haze, and potentially Timesplitters 4- that and for some reason I can't fucking stand the asymmetrical analogue stick design.
One can't deny the 360 is still stronger in many respects. *shrug*
can anyone give me details on the PSeye ? whats the going price ?
has anyone with the thing bought the 1.99 'games' for it? Are they dumb, or fun for a 4 year old? This would *really* solidify my wife's relationship with the PS3, which she calls, "that thing"

£24.99
Its not a bad price really and from the looks of it is a big step up from the original EyeToy.

The bought the camera with Eye of Judgement. I probably would buy it even if I didn't like EoJ but mostly for the voice chat, microphone array, and the because some of the SONY concepts using it look awesome.
I bought a couple.
Mesmorize is kinda neat, but its more like an interactive screen saver. My kids (4 year old twins and a 2 year old, have fun with it) but I don't really use it because you can't play music off your ps3 while "playing" it. (Has its own music, not custom soundtrack. If it was a visualizer for your music it would be pretty awesome) Still most adults find it kinda cool for a few seconds to a couple of minutes.
Trials of Toroq, or whatever the hell its called: This one is actually kind of fun if you don't mind looking like an idiot. You move a marble around a course by using your body. You see yourself superimposed on the play field and wherever you make movement it raises the field causing the marble to roll. You have to avoid various obsticles, enemies and falling off the board.
Eyecreate Free: Ok so I didn't really buy it, but decided to include it. Eyecreate is a pretty neat little video recorder but its a bit limited. You can't do much editing, just splice different movies together and add sound etc. It also has various filter and effects you can use. However you can export video so you could always use your computer to do the real editing. If you could record with it while playing a game like rockband it would be totally awesome. (I suppose if you played rockband on the 360 you could )
I might have bought another game or two but I don't remember off the top of my head. If I find that I did I'll edit my post.

Whoa whoa whoa, Haze is Free Radical? I am suddenly interested in that game.
To rephrase one of my earlier questions, how is linux under the ps3, anyone here give it a shot? Is the software selection decent or is there still a lack of stuff ported to the cell processor?

Thanks for this.. I would love to try them, but $40 for the eye and $2 a game for something that won't be used, is well, dumb. EOJ seems cool, but i don' think i would get into it.
It would have cost me $160 to get online with the 360 (wireless adapter and live), and that is retarded. This, plus bluray and a hate for console fps's made it a fairly easy choice. Also, if you like baseball games The Show is the only option.

Get both if you can.
PSN: Broichan
The slip says download April 17th, playable April 21st. It's only the 16th today, so did it get released early or only for different regions?
I will buy PS3 / MGS4 bundle woo
has anyone with the thing bought the 1.99 'games' for it? Are they dumb, or fun for a 4 year old? This would *really* solidify my wife's relationship with the PS3, which she calls, "that thing"

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
But it is the 17th... in Japan.
So hopefully will be able to play it come saturday.
Whats that monster one? I forget the name..

While it would have been nice to have included WiFi with the console, there are cheaper solutions than the official wireless adapter.
