I have a handful of videos for my little brothers Zune. So what I was going to do was just drag them onto the Zune and have him add them himself from his PC. I've done this tons of times with peoples iPods but I can't get my laptop to see it. It connects but even when viewing hidden files and folders I can't see the Zune. So after getting pissed I downloaded the Zune software but I then couldn't get it to recognize the videos. Shouldn't the Zune software recognize any video file and be able play them at least? I've seen him converting files with the Zune software on clips he's downloaded from crap like youtube and what not.
There are .avi files, does it not work with .avi at all?
Are there any 3rd party programs like phPod?
Or hell, why can't I just access it like a hard drive?
I honestly just want to access the Zune like an external hard drive, that's it, WHY GOD WHY!!
zune won't show up as an external drive, it's protected that way and it's pretty gay.
It also will only let you copy files to/from it, from a single computer. So if you ever get a new computer, you have to switch the computer ownership for the zune and that formats it's memory.
no clue if theres any third party transfer software out there atm.
:edit:
did a little digging through google for you. this seems to be the only way.
1. Make sure your Zune is not plugged in and your Zune software isn't running
2. open up regedit by going to the start menu and selecting "run". Type regedt32 and hit "OK"
3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\
4. Search for "PortableDeviceNameSpace". This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above ...\USB\ The ##'s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Zune
5. Change the following values:
* EnableLegacySupport to 1
* PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
* ShowInShell to 1
6. Plug in your Zune, and make sure the Zune Software starts up.
7. Hopefully at this point you can open up "My Computer" and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.
8. Don't put anything in the root directory of the Zune though
as with any registry edits, please make a backup before you do anything.
Wow, that's ridiculous. I always wanted a nice big external hard drive and I always wanted a big portable media player for the car (I always take my laptop which doesn't work so well obviously).
I liked the Zune a lot to after playing with my brothers, but damn...
I don't even think I'll do that, I'll just burn them to some discs (a waste buttt I'd rather not mess with my registry).
If you have an older iPod, you can put RockBox on it and use it exactly like you are trying to.

The whole thing where it formats your zune on a different computer is bullhonkey.
There's a setting where you can choose what songs/videos/podcasts/pictures you put on your Zune, and when I go over to my grandma's to hook it up there, everything remains on.
In fact, in my little memory bar at the bottom of the software it says "Reserved Space from Other Computers"

well news to me than, when I got my new comp last year, it wouldn't let me put anything at all onto the zune from the new comp, until I formatted it
also, for the video part, Zune only support certain video formats/resolutions. You can't just drop a random DivX file into the software and copy it to the zune.
Seriously, you said you played with your brother's and liked it, then bought it. Did you not read anything about the product before you did?
The not being able to use it as an external drive(which is actually common in MP3 players now, fucking zune) and video codec limitations(which exists on almost all portable video players), are pretty common knowledge if you spend 5 minutes on the internet reading about the zune.
I have an Archos 605 wifi 160GB (hard drive, but there are also some flash versions.)
The UI is pretty bad, but it's got a nice, bright screen that can display videos at full DVD resolutions (it's 800x480) It's a touchscreen, too, and you can pay something like 30$ to unlock the Opera browser and then use it to browse the web, and even watch Youtube videos.
Apart from the wifi connection, you can also connect it to any computer that has a USB port. In that case, you have two options: it can show up as a media player and integrate with Windows Media Player (or Winamp or whatever other player/media manager you use) or you can set it up to show up as a drive, with drive letter.
Also, it plays many video formats, including even FLVs ripped from Youtube and similar sites. You have to buy separate codec packs for some video formats, though (H264 and aac sound come with the "Video Podcasts codec pack, and MPEG1/2 support, including direct VOB playback, comes in another pack.) But for DivX and XviD videos, you get that natively. The only non-H264 MPEG-4 format I tried that it didn't like used "quarter-pixel" or something similar.
Check it out. It has its faults, but at least, it's worked well for me so far.

You have to go into the software and check off "Let Me Choose What to Put On" before plugging in your Zune
Or, if it isn't working, still check it off before plugging in your Zune, but then take all of your Zune content off, copy it to the computer, and then format it.

Thanks though.
but the lack of being able to use it as a portable drive can be a bit of a downer.
