You can probably avoid building a good military for a bit, but you do of course take the risk of being an easy beat. People using the OP linked Firefox script will look for people with 0 military score and attack them mercilessly. So I advise you to build at least a couple of naval ships in each port plus a couple of Phalanxes. It won't take a lot of resources to do this and it should discourage at least casual raiders.
Lets see. I've got crystal on my island...do I want to expand to marble, sulfur, or wine? I mean, I'm still researching wealth, so I don't know exactly -how- to colonize yet, but when I can.

You won't have to worry about it for some time if you haven't researched wealth yet. But, when you do, it's either marble or wine. No doubt.
Does either candidate island have a bonus to production? That's the one I would go with.
I just researched the Wine Press, but I'm hesitant to put a Tavern in my only colony since I don't have a reliable source of wine. I've only got the 50 from researching Wealth so far... Should I wait until I know where my next drink will come from?
On that matter, what's the best way to secure a resource? I have no military might so far, so I'm guessing expansion isn't the best option.
I prefer the sulfur route, with that you can then pillage the wine and marble from others around you.
Edit: Just got my 8 swordsmen (thank you Blue Map!) up and running, sending them at people in a double wave crunch of 4 and 4 and being a general ass to others around me.
I've got 30 swordsmen in queue. Add on top of that 20 archers 10 battering rams and a cook and there's my main assault force. I love having a sulfur island.
I've started a colony! About 6 hours to travel, though. Unless trade ships move faster than colonies?
Now taking names for it:
It's hard to get more badass than Dreadfort--flayed man and whatnot. Just stay away from Deepwood Motte.
My people at Pyke probably couldn't resist raiding the shit out of that place.
In other news, I had a guy attack me with multiple accounts yesterday. Not terribly bright. This morning I awoke to another attack queued up from a different person. Ten Towers on the NPAX marble island is bracing for an unsolicited force of 41 coming from Darnassus (24:30). I'll send a few spies his way and suss out what manner of defenses he might have left behind.
Wait, so I sent 2 slingers at an undefended city. They pillaged it, won, and are on their way back, but I don't seem to have gotten anything. How do I check? My trade ships (I have 2) didn't seem to do anything.

You don't get anything until they get back. Once they are back, the battle summary will list the haul at the bottom.

Build the tavern anyway. Even with no wine flowing, just having a place to come together and complain about the lack of wine gives your people a +6 happiness boost per tavern level.
Similarly, empty museums are worth +20 happiness per level.
Oh man, I can't wait to get home. I'll have enough resources to finally build up a defense, and I will conquer some other assholes on my island. They will like it.

Actually, you can see what you will get right now by clicking on your trade ship icon, then mouse-hovering over the appropriate ships. If you don't have any trade ships (or didn't have any available when the battle won), then you would receive nothing. Note that the trade ship doesn't let you know how much gold they are bringing back.

You can also check your trade ships button. Hover your mouse over the returning fleet and it'll tell you how much they've pillaged.
Well everything's back, and I didn't get anything. I have 2 trade ships, and they werent' doing anything. So I think I just wasted 40 wood by having a slinger die. That sucks.
Darnassus (24:30) is ripe for the picking. Level 10 city with a level 3 wall. He's sent just about his entire army at me leaving a paltry defense behind.
Navy: 2 ram ships
Army: 2 slingers, 2 swordsmen

All received apps to NPAX have been accepted. If you have not been accepted to NPAX, then, I have not received an app. Please remedy this on your end if you wish to join our fine establishment.
Also, I've got a colony ship on the way to 43:11 to join the marble team. Ask anyone who is on my islands, and you'll know this is a good thing, as much of my plunder gets added to the local mill and quarry. 43:11 will also be the local distribution point for your sulfur needs, so hit me in game when you are running too low. Once it's established and such.
Waiting on apps from: genericfan, kingslayer, hellbunny, zarcath, mattmoss.
Solysp/Kayne, how is the embassy situation looking? And what can we do to help you get to the 4th colony?
Map will be updated this weekend; hit the post in my sig and make sure all your colonies are listed; post or pm me details (here or ig) if they are not. Proper format is:
player name @ xx:yy / city name / resource
As usual the logjam continues to be the fact that I can't build more than one thing at a time, resources aren't a huge issue yet except for making certain that I send off enough marble back to Altenfeuer. I'm going to queue up an upgrade to all three of my embassies when I get back from work (currently working on upgrading their town centers), which should help out a little bit, then maybe one more embassy upgrade or two and I'll start trying to get my warehouses up to snuff in preperation for another colony. Wine this time I think.
I could use some, I'm about 12 hours from being able to use it though.
Guess what? I'm sending you 300 anyways!

You sir are a gentlemen and a scholar. Need any Marble?
Oh, always eventually I do. Only at your extreme convenience, however.
Are you pillaging Dragoinovo at 9:97? You oughta be; he has no defense and I have taken:
5260 Gold
781 Wood
41 Wine
259 Marble
76 Sulfur
6 times today already! Get in on the action.
Cheers
Oh shits, let me get in on that. Just sent my forces out to two different people with no defense to see what the pickings were there. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Edit: Turns out that I attacked that dudes second colony at 10:96 named Puldin.

raidersbso from floppy donkey 1 has won the battle and pillages Blue map. Loot, 4 gold, 2 wood, 53 marble
I wonder if the 1000 something gold he spent in upkeep was worth it.

Well, considering marble can be sold for 20 gold a piece around here, I'd say its close.
To Cycloptichorn: I just got the raid report and I got 701 gold, 157 wood, 5 Marble and 36 Crystal from the same guy you were attacking, but his colony instead. This dude is not going to be happy when the day is over.
