Yeah, I imported one of the DS games, and it was TERRIBLE. All the PS2 games I imported were amazing though, and Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 for the GCN was really sick too.
They really lucked out with the devs for the license.

Not only that but since its ninja it can be almost any type of genre they want. I mean the way the series is I can easily see it being a beat em up. But then a fighting game seems right too. I guess some RPG can be thrown in for getting your guys stronger but hey lets go and have some adventure/platforming and exploration. I mean it really can be nearly any genre and thanks to that it can succeed wonderfully.

I'm not really sure how this game ended up on my radar. I've never seen the show, am only a very casual anime fan, and I can get pretty easily frustrated with fighting games. But, I played the demo and freaking LOOOOVED it. My question is: how representative of the game is the demo? I was really blown away by the animation and such during the fight, but is that kind of a special encounter? Do you run around and talk to people and get in smaller fights for a few hours until something really cool happens? Or is the whole game pretty much like the demo (cuz if so : SOLD)?
Also, the gametrailers review mentioned the game is comprehensive enough for newcomers to the series, but I do see a lot of mention of the game hitting several major story arcs. Will I be confused? It there "implied drama" that I won't get like "oh my god I can't believe these two characters are teaming up/fighting to the death/etc."
The game does a terrific job fleshing out the story arcs and keeping you in the know. It leaves out little details that you don't need to really know otherwise, and the story is pretty simple to follow. The beginning is a LITTLE slow with a few BS missions, but after that, it's non stop. I had a BLAST playing this game, I think I put like 13 hours into it in 2 days, which is pretty ridiculous. Go for it! Let's play online
I was a huge fan of the first game and this one is even better, but not in every way. I do miss the over the top ultimate jutsu's. My major complaint was that Zabuza wasn't in. I have no idea why.
I do hope they release some dlc characters for this game, more assists, whatever. I will say this game has one of the greatest video game fights ever. I won't say which one, but I think it's so well executed every fan of the show owes it to themselves to play it.
edit:
I do like how the awakenings work in this game. Kabuto is a beast.

The demo is essentially one of the game's "boss fights". There's 8 of them in total, if I remember right. The rest of the fights are "normal" fights. the regular fights are pretty fun, too, though. There are some light adventure game stuff in between fights, with some running around and optional stuff, and the narrative stuff of course. But you can pretty easily blast through the adventure stuff to get to the story and fighting stuff.
The game does a pretty good job of following the story...but it starts at the halfway point of the series(the first UNS game covered the first half) so it wouldn't really be a bad idea to quickly skim a synopsis of the series before it became "Naruto Shippuden". Here's an incredibly brief one, though it skips over a lot of details:
Naruto Uzumaki is a young boy who has the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him. Twelve years before the start of the series, the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked the ninja village Konohagakure, slaughtering many people. In response, the leader of Konohagakure and its ninja military – the Fourth Hokage – sacrificed his life to seal the demon inside Naruto when he was a newborn. Konohagakure, however, regarded Naruto as if he were the demon fox itself and mistreated him throughout most of his childhood. A decree made by the Third Hokage, who replaced the Fourth Hokage after his death, forbade anyone mention the attack of the demon fox to anyone else. This included Naruto, who was not aware of the demon inside of him.
Years later, Naruto is tricked by the renegade ninja Mizuki into stealing a forbidden scroll, but he is stopped by his teacher, Iruka Umino. When Iruka almost dies while protecting Naruto from Mizuki, Naruto uses a Jutsu he learned from the scroll that creates multiple clones of himself, Shadow Clone Technique, to defeat Mizuki. This encounter leads Naruto to realize that he is the container of the demon fox.
The main story follows Naruto and his friends' personal growth. Naruto befriends two comrades, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, who are assigned with him to form a three-person team named Team 7 under an experienced sensei named Kakashi Hatake. Like all the ninja teams from every village, Team 7 is charged with completing missions requested by villagers, such as doing chores or being bodyguards. During the course of their missions, Naruto befriends other characters that he meets throughout the series. Team 7 learns new abilities, get to know each other, and experience a coming-of-age journey as Naruto dreams of becoming the Hokage of Konohagakure.
After several missions, Kakashi allows Team 7 to participate into a ninja exam in which they can improve their ranks, and thus, take part in more difficult missions. During the exams, Orochimaru, a criminal at the top of Konohagakure's most wanted list, attacks Konoha and kills the Third Hokage in an act of revenge. This forces one of the three legendary ninja, Jiraiya to search for his former teammate Tsunade, who has been nominated to become the Fifth Hokage. During the search, it is revealed that Orochimaru desires to acquire Sasuke Uchiha due to his powerful genetic heritage. Believing Orochimaru will be able to give him the strength needed to kill his brother Itachi, who destroyed his clan, Sasuke goes to him in search of power. Tsunade sends a group of ninja including Naruto to make Sasuke return to Konoha, but Naruto is unable to defeat him and bring him back to the village. Naruto does not give up on Sasuke, however, and he leaves Konoha to train for two-and-a-half years under Jiraiya's tutelage in order to prepare himself for the next time he encounters Sasuke.
Thanks for the info people. I had sort of figured the game wasn't necessarily 13+ hours of that quality (and had seen snippets of the "running around talking/collecting" portions. If the first UNS had more over the top jutsus and covers the first half of the series, now I'm thinking I should probably play that one first (which may be good since I assume it's cheaper).
I tried playing a bit online last night, and I got absolutely w-r-e-c-k-e-d. I mean, like dude would nearly perfect me 5 times in a row. I beat the game with basically no retries - there must be a serious curve I haven't started climbing yet!

I enjoyed the first one, though I will say that overall the second game's story mode is much better. But the over the top ultimate jutsus are hilariously awesome.

I need to check this thread, and add you.
There's some serious competition there. Also some really cheese moves.
I been maining Sasuske. Combine him with Kabuto as a support and I'm usually guaranteed 2-3 Ultimates in a match.

Like, regular Shippuden Sasuke or Taka Sasuke?
Regular Sasuske with Kirin as his Ultimate.
Kabuto as a support is like a 4 hit combo, with the last hit knocking the opponent up. It's long enough where it gives you time to activate your ultimate, 9/10 the oponent won't tech out of the air hit so it lands. It's beastly, and the strategy works on offense or when you use Kabuto to break a combo.
That's where lots of strategy of the game comes in. Picking the supports that compliment your jutsus/ultimates.
