I think the reason I keep coming back to this game is the fact that I love hiding in boxes while enemies walk past, completely oblivious.
Once, I was the last person alive in TDM, and there was one enemy. I got on my back and feigned death. He walk right by and while on my back, I shot him down with my pistol. It always gives me that adrenaline rush.
It helps that people rarely use the same tactics, which is odd, given the fact that it's a Metal Gear game.

Whenever I join a losing team, I choose to play this way. It's really fun with a teamate notices what you are doing and hides in a box parallel to your own. Springing some horrible double trap on an enemy.
Also sneaking up behind enemies held up at a chokepoint is so fun. You just start knocking dudes out and slashing like crazy. Moments like that keep me playing.
Or when I get blown up with a grenade, so I just stay on the ground and wait for a sucker to come around a corner. Turning a bad situation into your upperhand because of placement, equipment, or general mindfucking makes this game amazing.
The latency, strange hitbox detection, and shit support totally turn me off though.

I sent a clan application for the character DremAgain. My PSN is PooglyWoogly and I do have a mic.
There was an update today to 1.11. The Survival match lobby is now open, but when you try to create a team it says the survival match is not open. It sounds cool, though.
What kind of player are you guys? I mostly play support, watching sniper flanks and open chokepoints.
Usually rocking an assault rifle and enemy locators.
We got any trappers? That will come in handy for sure.
Remember guys, hunker down, camp, head towards enemy spawn, but not too far in. Should be pretty fun.
Smashism's Super Lazy MGO Beginner's F.A.Q.
This assumes you have read the online manual.
I also assume you have beaten the single player, and have a few games under your belt.
This is also half assed and put together one night while bored. Future fixes can/will be made and additions from others are more than welcome.
I put this together to save first timers from the initial frustrations a lot of us had (heh still have) with the game. MGO gives the players a lot of tools, sometimes it's hard to tell which to use.
Latency Why is my game so laggy?
Well buddy, MGO in general isn't the smoothest of games. Situations where both an opponent and you die at the same time will happen a lot. A few things can be done to circumvent this, mostly choosing a game with the best latency and without laggy participants.
How do I check latency?
MGO doesn't provide proper ping numbers like a good online game should, but it does give you a vague connection meter in both the server browser and the actual game room.
<||| This is what the latency(ping) looks like.
<||| is a full meter. This means your headshots should hit fine, and your enemies will die soon after you shoot them.
<|| This can be a bit vague. On the upper end of the spectrum, it can be almost as good as double-green. Once in a while you'll see an enemy skip or both users die at the end of every gun battle. It might be better off finding a full green room.
<| Prepare to be frustrated. Think you got him in CQC? Wrong 2 seconds later he is miraculously headshotting you. Someone just killed you? Oh the connection is so bad it thinks you died twice. So when you spawn, you die right away, once again entering the queue. Avoid at all costs.
Setup/Options Lock-On? I don't need it, I am amazing.
Turn it on in Gameplay options. Even if you are a headshotting god, the knife is practically useless without it. I will explain in the weapons/tactics section.
Weapon Switch/Item Switch
Set Weapon Switch to Cycle Mode. This allows you to tap R2 to quicky switch weapons. Set slot C to Knife or Support depending on your preference.
Item switch can be set to your own preference. Tapping L2 will take the box on/off. If you choose to do Recall mode it will switch between your last chosen items. I prefer this in case I pick up the NVG's so I can still use my box on the fly. I find cycle mode to cumbersome for items
Headsets?
For some reason, MGO's headset options are a bit funky. You should try setting them up in a practice room or something before using it online. The default settings leave most peoples mic's sounding like a garbage bag, or not even picking up. Once you setup your options, Hold select to use the mic.
Honestly though, most people use the select > d-pad commands, they are pretty useful and easy to use on the fly.
Game Basics Spawning/Enemy Spawning
Learn spawns. So you can camp them. Simple as that. Pay attention to how far you can go into enemy territory before the spawns easily outflank you. Pay attention to teamates, they usually camp the right spots.
If you are being spawn camped, try telling your teams to stay together on the radio and start tossing grenades around corners. Not much else you can do.
How do people get so many damn headshots?
First things first, if you played the old MGO do not try to line up every headshot in First Person, this is usually slower and inefficient.
Tips for third person headshots:
The reticle is gigantic, but this doesn't mean the spread is that wide, you can still aim pretty far as long as you know where the general "center" of the circle is.
Line up the reticle to where the head will be, then pop off the first few rounds. That first shot counts because its your most accurate.
To have the upperhand on your enemy try to +1 whatever he is doing. So if he is standing and moving while shooting, you try staying still and shooting for the head. Statistically you should hit him first.
Alternately, if he is standing and shooting, try crouching to once again out do your enemy.
Always cut corners with R3, this will allow you to get the first shot off around corner and see easier.
Only go full auto if they are within like 4 feet, or if you have a submachine gun. If not, burst.
Tips for first person headshots:
The recoil in first person makes it tough to do long bursts with assault rifles.
Useful for very long range shots. Iron sights can hit a sniper easily if you are good enough.
Use the D-Pad to peek around corners. Very useful as a sniper and sometimes more useful for potshots around corners than third person.
First person is the most situational out of the two-views. You will learn when to use it the most with experience.
S.O.P. aka Why am I glowing and seeing people through walls?
When next to a teamate, tap triangle to login to SOP. Basics are in instructions. Keep in mind a few things when using SOP.
You get more information from SOP when proned or crouched.
You must manually login to SOP everytime you die and respawn.
If you are going behind enemy lines for some melee, sometimes it's better to stay out of SOP. In case the enemy team grabs you and scans you like crazy. Giving away your teams positions.
How to use Radio Commands effectively.
Before I start the match off I like to remind everyone to stick together. Sometimes using this radio command twice helps. If its a target match I remind the team to protect the target.
If in team sneak I keep open the "Attack" radio command rose. Sometimes its easier to notify the team an enemy is close, than to actually run out and shoot that floating knife or gun. So as soon as I see an enemy I tap Right on the D-pad, wait for backup and move out.
Communication is key, the command rose is both simple to use and teamates do respond to it.
How do I sneak as Snake in SNE or with stealth camo in Team SNE?
Follow the rules of the SP game. In MP if your in a stealthy spot, you'll appear to the enemy as a vague outline.
Stay crouched or proned.
Stay still when an enemy is looking your way.
Sometimes avoiding enemies is better.
Stay with a buddy or get MK II to work with you.
Rolling, and you!
Roll into enemies that are crouching to knock them down.
Rolling into enemies depletes their stamina.
Only roll into cover. Not out of it. You are stunned for a split second while recovering to stand up. During this time it is REAL easy to line up a headshot to where your character's standing animation will finish. Making you one easy target. Use this to your advantage too!
Equipment and Weapons tactics Huh? It's just a box.
The box is a life saving, all amazing, bag of tricks. Tap L2 to quickly pop it on and off. Use it for everything.
Since you are crouched when in a box, you get a better readout from SOP.
You move faster in a box than when crouch running.
Wearing a box between cover keeps your head hidden. Saving you from headshots. Use this to your advantage... A LOT.
If you get blown away by an explosion in a box, you lose it for the round or that life.
A box can deflect the shotgun stun. So use it to block the shot, wait for the pump action, pop out of the box, headshot that bitch.
Wearing a box protects you from playboy magazines too.
Boxes also screw up opponents using CQC against you.
Last but not least, hide in a spot where a box has pre-spawned. Players know where boxes should appear and where they shouldn't. So don't go setting up in a random spot.
CQC... A real Big Boss, huh?
CQC can be a tricky proposition. Obviously try to approach an enemy from behind.
Countering CQC can be pretty hard but here's some tips for practicing.
Standing enemies using CQC can't throw enemies crouching or even better, inside of a box.
Range on the standing CQC grab is better than the crouching.
Rolling into someone crouching knocks them to the ground.
After grabbing someone, press x to crouch lower while holding an enemy in a chokehold. Press and hold R1 again and forward to bring the enemy to the ground while choking. This makes you less of a likely target.
Never use a rifle for CQC, it is rare that you ever will. Always use a pistol, grenade, or knife. Always. Switch back to your main weapon after you throw them to the ground.
Sometimes it's easier and less disorienting to lock onto a target after throwing them instead of manually aiming.
If someone throws you, it may be easier to just stay on the ground and fire from your back or belly.
Counter-Balance the KNIFE, quck slash. Retract.
Whenever you pull out the knife, use auto lock. This allows you to stab people who are proned while you aren't proned yourself.
Tap R1 for a quick slash, Pressing it with more pressure gives you a 1-shot stab. Slower to use, but more effective at times.
If someone is rolling like crazy, try to read their next roll into you, and stab them right out of the air. Do this while standing of course.
Throw an opponent. Crouch, wait for lock on beep, stab. Or wait for them to get up and R2 stun them. Then stab them.
If someone is trying to stab you with the above technique it can be countered. Try to ground-roll left or right out of their range, then stand up and dive away.
Grenades, just like every game, spamming them is awesome.
Grenade quicktips:
Pretty straightforward stuff.
Pull one out before an enemy CQC's you. He might hesitate because you can go suicide bomber on him. If he grabs you, you drop the grenade and both of you die. This leads to some hilarious split second stand offs.
Hold a grenade while being hit by one or being stunned by a shotgun, causes you to drop the grenade at your feet. Resulting in your imminent death and probably the death of your teamates.
Use enemy locators to line up headshots through cover or around walls.
Traps and Magazines.
Set these up where the enemy will be and where your team won't want to push up too far.
USE SIXTH SENSE OR FUCKING DIE. If you go around leaving magazines for your teamates to find without warning them via sixthsense. Your team will be slaughtered and they will be pissed.
Sleepy, adding weapon tactics tomorrow.
If you guys have anything to add, do it. I would love it.
I love this game.
Actually I hate it.
both?
Ok faq is pretty updated. I could add more weapon tips but I have no experience outside of the assault rifles and handguns. Which are very straightforward.
Before I PM the FAQ to be added to OP anything you guys wanna add or change?
Blue mapHello darkness, my old friend.Registered Userregular

Edit:You might want to add the fact that in TSNE when your on the sneaking team your weapons dont go invisible, so dont take out a bigger weapon than you need as it will just make you a easier to spot, also you might want to add in the fact that you can shake down enemies for lethal guns. On the non sneaking side of things one of the best ways to spot a sneaker is to look for a floating knife.
Good games back there geestack.
A kid was trying to tell us that a red bar has nothing to do with latency, just connection rate. Which is essentially the same thing. He kepts swearing a GM told him so and that bar is not related to latency.
I don't even know why I bothered, he was obviously confused on his terminology.
Still quite funny watching him try to convince an entire room that its Connection Rate which is NOT latency or Ping. Just some special measurement of time and space us mere mortals cannot understand.

Who's coming?
Haha yeah, it was fun; unfortunately I got disconnected from PSN and it forced me to log out. I'll be on for survival as soon as I finish dinner
Servers keep freezing the game. Trying to create survival now.
Inviting from clan freezes the game. God what the fuck is wrong with this game?
So yeah I can't invite you to my room. I don't really know what to do.
Giving up. Survival host functionality is crap. Half the options make the game restart. Making me relog over again. I've done it for about 20 minutes now. Giving up.
I am really over this game today. The fact that survival is STILL broken makes me so fucking mad. The fact that things dont function in the MAIN menu make me so angry too. What the hell konami? What kind of fucking QA is this?
What pisses me off even more is I can't call for support.
yeah its pretty fucking broken. Imma hang around for another 20 min if we still want to try to get a room going else i'll just try it with a bunch of randoms.

A 1up podcast a month ago with Ryan Payton had him bitching about the shitty konami support for online. He gave an email adress to who you could complain too. I can't remember it for the life of me.
It seems to me that MGO was cobbled together with little thought or sincere design consideration so Konami can make a grab for some DLC coin. This game is broken and will continue to be for a long while to come.
and I still have the urge to play it... damn love hate relationships.

We are all in this boat.
I'm wondering if stepping away from it for a month or two can keep my love for the game alive.
I hope this is growing pains.
I really enjoy the game, but everything they've implemented so far has been a complete clusterfuck, dating way back even to the beta. I mean, I just can't understand how they can underestimate the popularity of the game, it's freaking Metal Gear, it's like they didn't learn anything from the beta and just said fuck it, we'll make do. When the expansion hit, as soon as it went up the Konami store went down and they had to do that IP block bullshit so people could even access the store. And, they still haven't even gotten the reward shop up, so survival is even more gimped because you can't use your points for anything yet, which is hilarious because the reward shop is a feature they've been touting along with the new expansion. Maybe they've never done a serious online game like this before, but to not fix the issues that the game had since way back from the beta just feels like they're lazy as all hell.
