Aren't the 360 and the PS3 both a price drop behind in NA, compared to Europe?

Now would probably be a pretty good time to cut prices.

When the hell do you play any of those games? I've got like 10 Wii games and I've only played half of them.

Though I do have like 30 DS games and 28 out of 30 are beaten already. But my DS games are $30-35.

    Still. Deep pockets.

It's more a case of spending my entire life playing video games.

No, there is no fantastical excuse involving some cool and legitimate reason.

Yeah except this summer when I'm abroad for 2 months and probably wont be playing much of anything.

    Ironically of all places Edmonton.

Wont have time to go to PAX though, which is depressing.

In all reality both consoles are selling fairly well for this time of year. When you compare them to the Wii they look like dismal failures but its been like that since the Wii dropped. Thats why I usually block out the wii sales when I look at these. Its a safe bet theyre far and above anyways.

Yeah, none of the systems are really doing poorly, it just that while the 360, PS3, and PSP are having decent sales, the Wii & DS are having jaw-dropping record-breaking sales.

Depends on your perspective. If you want to spur sales? Yeah, it's a goddamn necessity. Financially however? From the point of view of Sony who has to export all their units for sale in the US, they've ALREADY had a 20% pricecut on the PS3 over about the past year thanks to the nosedive of the dollar - they lose all of the per sale revenue, but gain none of the increased sales volume or consumer goodwill! Hooray!

I can see why a pricecut is a tough sale right now, even if I personally think their pricing strategy this generation has been an abomination. If they're really committed to marketshare, they'd still be well advised to do it but I think they're realized it's not in the cards this time around, and having vanquished HD-DVD on the shoulders of the PS3 already I think they'll be content to hold steady with the soild PS3 sales they have now instead of striving for the Wii stratosphere. Which is probably their best course of action, really.

    360 should get a pricecut.

The European one from what we hear has been a success. GTA4 is like a week away.

Just announce 50 dollars off and I think thats all they need for a year or more.

Oh, yeah. The weak dollar has got to be fucking Sony's shit up.

Some guy at Nintendo HQ in Japan is probably chugging a jug of Jim Beam or something over the extra profit that could have been.

edit: re, microsoft... I'd imagine the manufacturing is happening overseas so they're probably not lovin' it either.

The HD consoles are both tracking the Gamecube if you align on launch dates. That's not exactly horrible, but keep in mind HD games cost a lot more to develop than CG games did. As a successor to the PS2 the PS3 is a huge, huge failure. I'm not really sure what MS expectations going into this gen were.

Consumers continue to make the ultimate vote for Xbox 360 as the console of choice by investing $9.4 billion to date this lifecycle in the Xbox 360 experience, far outpacing that of other game consoles. (March NPD data)

Going into March, some key U.S. retailers were still experiencing the trickledown effect of Xbox 360 console shortages. By the end of March, supply issues had improved and we expect retailers to be fully stocked with Xbox 360 consoles in time for the “Grand Theft Auto IV” launch. According to NPD, 262,000 Xbox 360 consoles sold in March, reclaiming the #2 position in the next-gen console category.

In just two weeks, Xbox 360 will extend its industry lead with the year’s most anticipated game launch, GTA IV. Launching April 29, GTA IV will be coming to Xbox 360 on day one. GTA IV will feature the first ever online multiplayer for the franchise and Xbox 360 is also the only place you can earn GTA IV Achievements and increase your gamerscore.

Starting this fall, only Xbox 360 owners will have access to exclusive GTA IV episodic content. Whether it’s the results of online polls or data from pre-sells, consumers have made it clear that the benefits of Xbox LIVE and exclusive access to GTA IV episodic content are making Xbox 360 the chosen place to play GTA IV.

My problem is I made the mistake of going "Okay, I'll buy a DS and a PSP. That'll be my videogame systems for this generation. DS for the Nintendo stuff, and the quirky stuff, and then the PSP for the games only the PSP hardware could handle." I thought it was a pretty good plan.

Then the option came up to get a Wii, so I picked one up.

And then I made a great fucking deal on a 360 so I picked it up too.

Now I've got every goddamn current console except for the PS3, and I can't keep up with any of them.

In fact I'll likely end up selling my PSP because I haven't touched it since October. Though that's largely because I have yet to find a Slim screen protector and I'm worried about scratching the screen any more than it already is.

    Clamshell FTW.

What the high Wii sales demonstrate is that there is a lot of people ready to buy a new console.

Due to the recent price cuts, in England, the 360 Arcade can be bought for less than a Wii, and supposedly sales have gone right up.

The Wii is pounding both 360 and PS3 in monthly sales at the moment in NA, and the next couple of months look strong for it too. So I'm thinking both the 360 and are overdue a price drop in the US, given that Europe has recently received one. Combined with GTAIV, like Scarab said above, a price drop could really shift units, and let's face it, both companies have extra potential cash revenues which open up when hardware is sitting in homes (Sony with Blue-ray, Microsoft with Live subscription and a plethora of peripherals).

    Some thoughts:

Looks like the 360 was really supply-constrained during the start of the year after all. Apparently sales between the PS3 and 360 are settling back where they were before.

God of War and Final Fantasy PSP did well, though it had absolutely no effect on hardware sales.

Jesus Christ Smash is a monster.

Nintendo must be making Wiis like crazy, because they sold that many before Wii Fit came out (which the company is obviously planning big things for, considering it will have the biggest ad budget of anything Nintendo ever).

I pity the poor guy who had to write the Microsoft press release this month.

At this point, somebody could make a computer program to write the press release. If 360 sales are greater than PS3 sales, mention how it is the number 2 best selling console. If 360 sales are less than PS3 sales, downplay them. Insert useless information on sales of hardware, software, and accessories.

I don't know your definition of high, but the stock nearly doubling in a year and a quarter is pretty fucking good to me and if you happen to have bought the stock 2.25 years ago it would have nearly quadrupled.

    They could just point to Europe;
    Xbox 360 European Sales

European leadership position strengthened following recent price adjustment

LONDON - Thursday 17th April, 2008- The momentum behind Xbox 360 continues to grow, as Microsoft today announced that European sales have more than doubled in the wake of recent adjustments of the estimated retail price (ERP), solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in Europe and significantly broadening the console’s audience.

“Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe,” said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. “The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers.”

Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market.

On Friday, 14th March, Microsoft lowered the ERP for its Xbox 360™ family of consoles in Europe. Now with an entry-level ERP of £159.99, Xbox 360 is a video game and entertainment system that is appealing to an even broader audience. Upcoming releases of blockbuster games such as “Grand Theft Auto IV,” “Rock Band,” “Lego Indiana Jones” and “Ninja Gaiden 2,” will continue this momentum and give consumers even more reasons to buy Xbox 360.

Bolded part for relevant positive news. I think the Wii is ahead in units sold by some margin, can't remember the numbers, but 360 is certainly selling something well.

So, Vegas 2 did 750k sales on the 360, and 100k sales on the PS3?

    wtf.

Also, Crystal Chronicles did a little bit better than I expected. I was expecting 60k sales.

Hot Shots looks pretty low, and indeed it is, but I want to say that those particular games usually have legs, but I could be wrong.

If I was Sony PR my press release would be 5 words long:

    Just wait till June assholes.

    A million seller
    on PS3: almost like
    waiting for Godot

What in the fuck does that mean?

You aren't a fan of French plays?
