Yes, but the quote implies that they're not having both, but ditching the wii after they "grow up" and buy a 360. Sales of smash would imply otherwise.
Also, since when was Samuel Beckett a French playwright?
The play was written in French.
In fact, most of Beckett's later work was written in French. He was in France during WWII as part of the French Resistance, and obviously decided that French was the language of choice for his work during this time.
Waiting for Godot is often called "one of the greatest English-language plays". Yet it is still unmistakably French.
Because they expect people who get into gaming because of the Wii might want to buy a second console?
It can happen, you know.
It rarely happens. Most people only buy one console a generation.
This generation is not comparable with any others.
It is entirely conceivable that the Wii is perceived as an 'entry level' console by some, who will later upgrade to PS360.
Or at least, that's what MS and Sony want to happen.
Indeed, it is what Microsoft and Sony want to happen. MS has actually said it more than once, openly.
The last statistic we got, though, I think was an NPD survey.. where they said that dual or triple ownership of consoles this generation is lower than it was last generation.
Thing is.. some people will go from the Wii to a traditional console. But.. I think something like that would take at least a full generation to occur. But of course there's no way to prove this point one way or the other.
It's interesting, because we're not really targeting the same consumer with the same kind of experience, but in many ways we're finding that as we grow and broaden...a lot of that audience is going to be graduating up from the Wii experience. We think we're a great complement to that. What Nintendo's doing is great for the industry, but it's great for us as well.
Why do they keep on saying this?
I'm sure it's true in some cases... but not most.
In fact, in my case, it's the opposite.
I used to be a hardcore PC gamer, and "graduated down" from that to the Wii and DS. I really don't have as much time for gaming these days, so I prefer to play games that can be played in short 20-30 minute burts between work.
I still own a 360 and gaming PC, but they get much less play-time than my DS and Wii.
edit: thanks, DMK. I just think that something so huge, with so much hype, for both systems, will have similar results. GTA is huge enough to garner the interest of the 360 fanbase like any other huge game at this point, if you ask me.
Sales of GTA
Split between the two consoles
360 to lead
(I say about 60 to 40)
I reckon closer to 65 35. The DLC is a pretty major thing.
That was my initial thought, but I don't really want to discount the silent PS3 masses. I think it'll do well on both, but favour the 360. I'd think the only way it would become a serious rout is if the DLC itself spawns massive sales or something with the release on PS3 fucks things up hard. (I read somewhere (here?) that it will require a five minute install before playing. I'd hate to think what that would mean if something goes wrong somehow...)
I pity the poor guy who had to write the Microsoft press release this month.
They could just point to Europe;
Xbox 360 European Sales
European leadership position strengthened following recent price adjustment
LONDON - Thursday 17th April, 2008- The momentum behind Xbox 360 continues to grow, as Microsoft today announced that European sales have more than doubled in the wake of recent adjustments of the estimated retail price (ERP), solidifying its leadership position as the number one next-generation console in Europe and significantly broadening the console’s audience.
“Xbox 360 is truly the next-generation console of choice among consumers, and today’s numbers are proof that we are delivering on our commitment to achieve critical mass in Europe,†said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. “The highly competitive ERP, coupled with entertainment content that’s appealing to everyone in the home, makes Xbox 360 the ultimate high-definition entertainment choice, and it’s clear that we’re already seeing this resonate with consumers.â€
Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 27 months on the market.
On Friday, 14th March, Microsoft lowered the ERP for its Xbox 360™ family of consoles in Europe. Now with an entry-level ERP of £159.99, Xbox 360 is a video game and entertainment system that is appealing to an even broader audience. Upcoming releases of blockbuster games such as “Grand Theft Auto IV,†“Rock Band,†“Lego Indiana Jones†and “Ninja Gaiden 2,†will continue this momentum and give consumers even more reasons to buy Xbox 360.
Bolded part for relevant positive news. I think the Wii is ahead in units sold by some margin, can't remember the numbers, but 360 is certainly selling something well.
They must have some good sales in the Middle East and Africa then (EMEA stands for Europe, Middle East and Africa), because they sure as hell aren't the number one next gen console in Europe alone. The Wii outsold it ages ago and the PS3 is pretty close to passing it.
PS3 Sales Up Nearly 100% Year-Over-Year; PS3 Momentum Continues

So wait for ... is now the official Sony line?

the White Engine has
actually been renamed
to "Crystal Tools" now
They've managed to get
the engine so that it can
work on the 360
as a matter of
fact, the tool-set will work for Wii and PC too
No, it won't. They want to port some of the engines tools to the Wii but that doesn't mean the actual engine will be running on it.
that's why I said "tool-set" would work for the Wii; because the "White Engine" isn't so much an engine any more as it is a uniform way of making 3D games. That doesn't mean that the exact same sort of thing will run the same on all of them. It just means that the tools they have available for making games on each platform are similar.
Anyway, I think the real winner this month is the DS. Looking historically, the best non-Nov/Dec month in NPD history is now the Wii at 721k, the DS at 698k, and the PS2 at 690k in June of '02. It's a very rare occurrence outside of Thankgiving/Christmas to sell this well. What makes the DS tally amazing is two things: the first is that it happened the same month the Wii went bonkers. You would think if one console was going to cross the 700k line and sell 2.7 million copies of a game the rest would suffer. The DS did not.
The second thing is what was powering DS sales. It had no Smash Bros, no Pokemon, no Zelda. It's only significant release was an over-priced Final Fantasy game (and maybe Ninja Gaiden). Straight ridiculous in my mind that the DS just keeps getting better especially given the competition this month.

"And some mountain dew."
This generation is not comparable with any others.
It is entirely conceivable that the Wii is perceived as an 'entry level' console by some, who will later upgrade to PS360.
Or at least, that's what MS and Sony want to happen.
This is considering the split of nearly 8:1 for Vegas 2, but 1.26 to 1 for DMC4.
Because there is some truth to it, and it is a pretty clever spin on being outsold by a competitor.
Not that they really need to spin, all they need to focus on is maintaining sales and continuing to sell a bunch of software.

Oh, and back on topic:
Nintendo, yay. Not a fad, etc.
everyone will grow up,
and play halo online.
Best I could do.

That actually seems pretty fair.

how about...4 mil in the first month? 3:1 split between 360 and ps3?
halo 3 sold 3.3 mill in less than two weeks...but it's hard for me to gauge whether GTA is just as popular with the 360 crowd as halo 3...
it's scary that my predictions are likely conservative
Edit: and around a 2:1 split in the 360's favour.
Its only in the reporting period for like 5 days.
It's getting a simultaneous release right?

Never... Sony might release it though... Oh and we're meant to get a ton of new info in the next month or so, according to Famitsu anyway.
Anyway, the only thing that kind of surprised me was God of War: CoO outselling FFVII: Crisis Core. God of War's more popular than FFVII? o_O
