Why? They aren't in competition comparing them doesn't really make any sense.

Of course it does. A Console being outsold by a peripheral? That's epic.

No.. thats retarded. I can almost garuntee that more wiimotes have been sold than all 3 consoles combined. Probably more spare 360 controllers or sixxaxis controllers have been sold than Wiis... so what?

    standard controllers =/= peripheral controllers

it's like if the eye toy or eye of judgment outsold another console. it would be just as strange. what if the DK bongos had outsold the oxbox? that would have been bizarre.

GH should probably fall in the same category of unique peripheral related game sales madness if not for the fact that it's multiplatform and that it's only tailor made for one game. it'd also be more or less impossible for GH on any platform to outsell the LTD of a rival console. Also, I don't think this phenomenon could happen in America.

on a somewhat related note, whats the possibility of the 360 GTAIV sku outselling the ps3 console LTD in the US? pretty slim, eh?

Plus, it's $100, which is what the DS costs. It's not as far removed as a $50 controller.

Yeah, it's a bit pointless, but still interesting to see. Isn't that what most of this thread is anyway?

There have already been many games that have outsold the PS3 US sales. Last time I checked there were about 4 and a half million PS3's in america. Shit even motorstorm sold 3 million something. OMG MOTORSTORM>PS3?!?!?!

It seems likes less conjecture and more like pointless wii(fit) wanking and lolsonyism is all. I would find it pointless if it was wiifit versus any console. (Well other than the wii, outselling that would be very strange indeed)

Why the hell does this always happen? Good lord. I'll repost the Sony FR from this morning since we seem to have blown by it in our rush to argue about WiiFit. Surely there's some discussion here.

    http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/info/presen/index.html
    Sony - Gaming Division FY07

    Profit: - $1.24 billion

    LTD Hardware sales
    PS2: 131.62
    PS3: 12.85
    PSP: 39.28

    LTD Software sales
    PS2: 1,394
    PS3: 71.2
    PSP: 157.04

    Attach rates:
    PS2: 10.6
    PSP: 4
    PS3: 5.54

    FY08 Hardware Forecasts
    PS2: 12 (sold 13.73m in FY07)
    PS3: 10 (sold 9.24m in FY07)
    PSP: 15 (sold 13.89m in FY07)

Previously I commented that I thought the 10m projection for the PS3 is a bit low. They sold 9.24m in FY07 so getting to 10m seems like a small jump. Additionally, while they had a net loss for the whole year the report states they were profitable in the last two quarters. Now everyone's in the black, hurrah.

Shipments of Sony's PlayStation 3 games console came in under target at 9.24 million units in the financial year to the end of March, and Sony's gaming business remained in the red, Sony said Wednesday.

The company sold a total of 2.3 million of the consoles in the first three months of this year to take the full-year total to just shy of Sony's target of 9.5 million units. Sony had originally forecast sales in the year of 11 million units but three months ago revised to the more conservative target when it realized it wouldn't make its original estimate.

Some consolation for Sony will be that its PlayStation Portable business now appears to be on the right track following a lackluster debut. Shipments of the handheld gaming device came in ahead of target at 13.89 million units. Sony had been anticipating shipments of only 13 million consoles in the year.

PlayStation 2 shipments showed weakness, which had been expected as consumers focused on the higher profile and higher power PlayStation 2. A total of 13.73 million PlayStation 2 consoles were shipped in the year.

"The PlayStation 3 platform expanded worldwide with an enhanced software line-up and a new model," Sony's chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda said at a Tokyo news conference on Wednesday. "Due to a reduction in the manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 3 and reduction in software prices, operating losses shrunk significantly and the business was in the black in the second half of the year."

Overall Sony's games business saw sales jump 26.3 percent during the year to ¥1.3 trillion (US$12.3 billion) and losses retreated from ¥232.3 billion a year earlier to ¥124.5 billion.

For the current year Sony expects its games business to record a profit.

Shipments of the PlayStation 3 are expected to be 10 million units, those of the PlayStation Portable 15 million units and those of the PlayStation 2 9 million units, Sony said.

Not meeting their shipping goals = bad.
Being in the red = bad.
Expecting to make a profit this year = good.

Lots of information to look over.

I'm still not entirely sure why everyone wants Nintendo to fail.

Because Nintendo is making video games in a slightly different way than the others, which of course means the downfall of humanity for some reason. At least according to countless internet posters. Wii Fit is the pinnacle of this Fear of a Casual Planet.

Many of these people who equate "casual" with "evil" are also PS3 zealots -- we're not talking about people who LIKE the PS3, we're talking about people who devote their entire posting energy to the utter destruction of everything that is not Sony. NeoGAF has a LOT of these.

Put the two things together, and you can see where some people might giggle at the thought of the violent nerd rage that will break out when Wii Fit overtakes the PS3 in Japan.

    Having to replace multiple PSOnes
    Having to replace multiple PS2s.

My dad owns a furniture and electronics chain. Back in the mid - late 90's Sony TVs were complete shit and their business end of things were very uncaring.

    There's also Bernie Stolar.

    And rootkit.

And their associate with the RIAA.

And their urge to push restricted and expensive proprietary formats.
Pretty sure neither microsoft or nintendo are free of sin here.

Yeah, well, the question wasn't "Why do you hate Nintendo?" But for the record, Nintendo never sold me a shitty TV and MS never tried to sue the consumer.

I appreciate the honesty. But really I don't want any console to fail. Competition is good for the industry. Look at what total assholes Nintendo was during the NES era and later Sony was during ps1/ps2. All these companies are out to make a profit, and if they don't have to compete they will do so by screwing you over. That being said its funny that sleep hates sony for the rootkit and riaa stuff because that really doesn't have much to do with the games division. Also Sony seems to be moving in the right direction with the ps3 by creating the most open console to date.

Also noone makes you buy $600 console at launch... I sure as hell wasn't going to pay that. (I bought mine after the price drop and with a $150 promotion so it was $350) And it wasn't like they were ripping people off they were selling them at a loss. Personally I think people that buy launch consoles are eaither rich or idiots since you know you are paying a price premium and first gen games aren't all that great.

Well, if a console fails, the exclusive franchises must move to a successful system. A PS3 failure would lead to MGS4 360 version. A 360 failure would lead to PS3 Halo etc. That requires Sega level of failure though and is not going to happen for any of the big 3 anytime soon.

Heck, I work for the competing platform and I don't want to see Sony fail. Competition is good.

Also, I <3 my PS2. Someday the PS3 will have enough games that I'll buy into that as well (I am a Squeenix fanboy, after all).
