If DC is behind the pussification of the fatalities, it's actually quite funny, since I can point to scads of DC comics in the past four years that put a lot of MK fatalities to shame.
That said, watching vids of this game only highlights to me how totally incongruous the two properties are. Ironically, Marvel characters would have been a better match with the MK crew.
Heh, right you are...especially during Infinite Crisis.
One majore example is when Black Adam kills Psycho-Pirate.
Is that the one where he like forces his fingers through the eyes of the other guys mask and blows his face out the back of his head? Because that was goretastic.
Tell some stories of DC characters being brutal. I want to hear. No, really. I want to hear, because I don't read DC comics.
Oh gosh. Where to begin...
Wonder Woman killed Maxwell Lord by twisting his head and snapping his neck.
Black Adam killed Terra Man by ripping him in half. He also tore Young Frankenstein's arms off, killed Psycho Pirate by poking his eyes back through his brain and skull, tore Father Time's face off, and slaughtered the inhabitants of an entire country.
Black Mask brutally tortured Stephanie Brown (then acting as Robin) to death with a drill.
Solomon Grundy graphically tore off the newly-human Red Tornado's arm. And ate it.
Superboy Prime tore off former Teen Titan Risk's arm. A year later, he tore off the other. Superboy Prime also punched Pantha's head off, sliced Bushido in half with his heat vision, punched a hole through Wildebeest, and beat Earth 2 Superman to death.
Green Arrow put an arrow through Deathstroke's (bad) eye.
During the war with the Sinestro Corps, many Green Lanterns have been brutally murdered and maimed. Once the restriction against killing was lifted from Green Lantern rings, a number of GLs have murdered and maimed Sinestro Corps members.
Mongul punched his sister Mongal's head off.
The Amazons killed a number of U.S. citizens (including children) in cold blood.
That's just off the top of my head. And these are all things that happened graphically on-panel (with the exception of Stephanie Brown's being tortured, but we saw the aftermath), not off to the side like the Joker's gunshot in MKvDC.
Speaking of bural DC characters, why the frag isn't Lobo in this?
Probably because he's not that popular anymore. That said, I'd be surprised if he doesn't make it into the inevitable sequel along with Black Adam, Doomsday, Hawkman, and a couple more Batman villains (Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy would work well, as would Bane).

Don't forget the classic Joker shooting Barbara in the spine and beating Jason to death with a crowbar.
Joker's fatalities are two of the best in the lot, but it would have been cool if he just went to town with a crowbar for one of them.
Yeah, the Joker's playing card fatality is even lamer because of all the stuff they could have drawn on instead. The crowbar thing would have worked, as would a face full of Joker Venom.
And while we're thinking about characters who should make it into the sequel: Harley Quinn.

You mean DLC. :P
Also, someone suggest me some good trade paperbacks of DC. Annnnnd go!

Clayface!
Shit, they could make one just using batman villians and have more then enough.
There really needs to just be a liscensed game with every possible person you could ever want in a fighting game. Yea, there is Mugen, but I want a real game.
Also, someone suggest me some good trade paperbacks of DC. Annnnnd go!
Oh, gosh. What are you looking for? I'm a huge DC fanboy and can give you recommendations in pretty much any area, if you have an idea what characters you'd like to read about, how recent you'd like them to be, what kinds of stories you're interested in (fantasy, sci-fi, etc.).
Shit, they could make one just using batman villians and have more then enough.
That's a good point. DC villains really fit into the MK universe a lot better than any heroes do, anyway.
Whether it be a sequel or DLC, I'd expect a sequel to include, from the DC side the afformentioned Black Adam, Doomsday, Bane, Hawkman and Harley Quinn, along with maybe Nightwing, Black Canary, Reverse Flash, Bizarro, Cheetah, and maybe some oddballs like Dr. Light and Aquaman.
And don't you dare laugh at that last one. The 90's Aquaman with the hook and the beard fits right into an MK game.

His fatality would involve summoning a land shark to devour his enemy.

The Kingdom and Kingdom Come.
Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Those are awesome crossover titles in paperback form. Then perhaps see which characters intrigue you the most?
See, Crisis on Infinite Earths is the absolute last thing I would ever, ever recommend to someone new to the DCU.
Firstly, it isn't a good story. It's basically a giant nerdy orgasm. With fantastic art, mind you, but the story is a giant convoluted fanwank. I think of it more like a textbook than a story.
Also, opinions vary on Kingdom Come, but its follow up - The Kingdom - was awful.
I haven't read what people have posted since my last post, I just wanted to mention that I love the Joker in this game. He makes the story mode so awesome.
We'll have to agree to disagree there, then, because I think The Kingdom is putrid and would advise anybody - new reader or old - to steer clear of it.
In the interest of some broad recommendations, I figure I'll just give one for every DC character who appears in MKvDC -
Batman:Batman: Year One. Pretty famous story by Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli that revamps Batman's origin. A lot of this made it into the Dark Knight movie.
Superman:All-Star Superman vol. 1. Incredible, timeless Superman stories by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
Wonder Woman:The Circle. Written by Gail Simone with incredible artwork by Terry and Rachel Dodson. Wonder Woman versus super Nazis on Paradise Island.
The Flash:The Return of Barry Allen. Not going to spoil anything, but this is the best Flash story ever.
Green Lantern:Green Lantern: Rebirth. Sets up the neo-classic GL we've got going on now, and is worth it if only for the gorgeous artwork. Plus, see Jon Stewart take out Superman by firing lazers through his eyeballs!
Captain Marvel:Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil. Retelling of the Captain's origin in a modern setting. Whimsical, but not childish.
Catwoman:The Dark End of the Street. Revamps Selina Kyle as an urban vigilante who helps others in her own way. Fantastic art and writing.
Lex Luthor:Lex Luthor: Man of Steel. A great look into the mind of Lex, why he hates Superman, and the lengths he'll go to to hurt him. Great art, too.
Joker:The Killing Joke would be the classic example here, but I'm going to go with The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told. I think it works better as an introduction to a character who varies wildly with every appearance.
That's a decent primer for the various characters.
Brainiac gives a good recommendation in Red Son.
Rather than Crisis on Infinite Earths, I'd recommend DC: The New Frontier and JLA: New World Order as better introductions to the DC characters at large.
Well, I've watched them again and have to admit I really kind of like the one where Wonder Woman spins you like a top and you drill into the ground. Other than that, very, very weak - Kano and Shang Tsung especially got spanked with crappy fatalities. Are there unlockable bosses and if so do they have fatalities?
shyguy, are those all trades? I definitely have All-Star Superman vol. 1. I totally forgot. I don't think I ever finished it. I will be sure to check out most of that.
And as for bosses, you can unlock Shao Kahn and Darkseid. I don't think they have fatalities, but I could be wrong.
i'll wait for Marvel vs DC vs Capcom vs Street Fighter: Neo Geo Coliseum edition. That is the day i will simultaneously vomit piss and shit myself while crying in joy.
Hush you! Or do you want Moore to turn us all into frogs?
I'm wondering if they'll continue the franchise like this, or branch out into a DC only game. I'm still really surprized Zatanna isn't in this game. She's perfect for it.
Yep. Well, The Circle is only available in hardcover at the moment, and that may be the case with Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil as well (can't remember), but a softcover edition will be along soon enough. The others can all be found in softcover under the names I provided.
If you're a Batman fan, you may also want to check out All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder. It's a riot, and the art is fantastic.
I am pretty sure I just added all the comics in this thread to my Amazon wish list. Can't wait to read these eventually.
BTW, fuck these kombo test thingies. I hate you Superman. I HATE YOU!
edit: I just jumped online. Played as Superman since I have been using him in practice mode. Guy also picked Superman and does the cheap infinite. Ugh. Now it is me (Superman) vs Scorpion. I am gonna mess this guy up!
edit: Annnnnd he beats me because they spam moves. Does no one go for combos in this day and age?
edit: Fought another Scorpion after that. He did the same thing, I just countered. When he does the teleport punch, I would block and then either use the shoulder charge or try to do the backhand+freeze combo. I HATE that they can do the teleport thing and then the fire from underneath without a hitch. I have no chance to defend myself from the fire (maybe side roll?).

Oh, the famous "I'm the goddamned Batman" line.
I read the new Joker book (which is, simply enough, Joker) right after it came out and I really enjoyed it. It pulls a lot from Dark Knight Joker, which is awesome, and there's practically no Batman at all. It's like a character piece, which is great because his character is so... inscrutable? I don't know if that's the word, but that's what comes to mind.
The new Joker book is pretty good; it's by the same creative team that did Lex Luthor: MoS.
Anyhoo, I tried to stick to books that are still largely relevant, recent, and readily available. I could blather on for hours about great Wonder Woman, Superman, Captain Marvel, and Flash stories.
More on topic (sort of) - I never understood Liu Kang's "Fatality" in the first MK. Like, WTF? As a kid I hated Liu Kang just because of his weaksauce spin kick/uppercut shit.
Also, I kind of keep harping on this, but watching vids of the game just keeps reminding me how much better the over-the-top Capcom style of fighting game worked for comic book superheroes. In a Capcom game, Wonder Woman could have supers where an army of Amazons rushes across the screen or the Invisible Jet opens fire on your opponent and nobody would bat an eye.
The Mortal Kombat aesthetic just seems so pedestrian for these larger-than-life characters.
I think the Mortal Kombat style lends itself well to these Alex Ross-esque DC characters. They're very beefy and heroic looking, and MK has always been more about power hits rather than finesse, so I think the two work well together.
I've finished both the MK and DC sides of the story, and the MK side was hilariously stupid (as I'm sure was intended), but the DC side was actually pretty cool.
As for the next game, I'm pretty sure I remember reading that this game is sort of a side-story that's not supposed to kick-off the next Mortal Kombat series. It's just a fun little diversion, and they'll look into making more if it does well. The next proper MK is supposed to be built from the ground up with next-gen in mind, and I think they've been working on it since before they even started on MK vs. DC. Hell, iirc, they were working on it before they even finished with Armageddon.

Kingdom Come was definitely better than The Kingdom, but it wasn't awful by a long shot. There have been waaaay worse elseworlds.

Also wonder if some will make it into this as DLC, as mentioned last page.
