I'd also recommend The Hiketia for a Wonder Woman story and Bruce Timm's work on Detective Comics for Batman stories.

    You mean Paul Dini?

the watchmen game was announced months ago, chief

Isn't that the one set in prequel times where you play Rorschach and Nite Owl cleaning up the streets?

    Could be worse.

If DC is behind the pussification of the fatalities, it's actually quite funny, since I can point to scads of DC comics in the past four years that put a lot of MK fatalities to shame.

That said, watching vids of this game only highlights to me how totally incongruous the two properties are. Ironically, Marvel characters would have been a better match with the MK crew.

Tell some stories of DC characters being brutal. I want to hear. No, really. I want to hear, because I don't read DC comics.

Also, Spider-Man vs Reptile (agility vs agility). Wolverine vs Scoprion (self healing vs flames and spears). Cyclops vs Kano (eye beam extravaganza).

During Infinite Crisis, Superboy Prime goes crazy and starts punching other heroes so hard his fist goes through them and heads start literally flying.

Black Adam Pushes his two fingers through Psycho-Pirates eyeholes so hard, Psycho-Pirate's head explodes.

Joker first squirts acid all over Alexander Luthor's face disfiguring him, and then uses a joy shock buzzer directly on his face, killing him.

Superboy Prime fights Earth-2 Superman and beats him to death.

The Injustice League surprise attacks Uncle Sam and his team and brutally kills them all, including blowing a hole through one of them and skewering another on a spike.

    To name some examples.

But there are actually more upsetting and violent things that happen. Like GL's girlfriend being stuffed in a fridge. Or the whole Sue Dibny thing.

Since I am a slacker and won't get my videogame blog up for awhile, I am giving my verdict. Worth $60? No. Worth half of that? A maybe, depending on what dlc they actually release. A yes if you own an arcade stick. I find this game unplayable with the 360 controller just for the fact that I have to transition between joystick and pad for jumping/side stepping (no way I use that dpad for all my movement).

And if so, for the DC characters, did they do anything inventive with it, or slightly different shades of their standard suits?

This would make good DLC considering how little effort it would take and how potentially could it could be. Some simple alternate skins could get you characters like -

    Black Adam
    Cyborg Superman
    Artemis Wonder Woman
    Hippolyta Wonder Woman
    Guy Gardner/John Stewart/Guy Gardner/Alan Scott
    Ultraman
Owlman (granted, the "summon bats" fatality would be a little off)
    Superwoman
    Power Ring
    Johnny Quick
    Jay Garrick
    Bizarro

That's just off the top of my head.

From what I've heard, using a stick is weird because you have to hold a button to jump. Or hold a button to move freely. Or something.

Either way I heard it was dumb.

But yeah, this isn't the worst game I've ever played. It's surprisingly fun, considering I hate Mortal Kombat.

When I use the Hori stick, I have the RT as the 3-d movement button. I rarely use it. I am all about playing this game ala MK1-3 (aka 2-d).

Ugh, I hate that this seems so obvious, but I can't find the question or answer anywhere-- I rented the game so I don't have the instructions. How do you do a counter, anyway? I've had limited success with forward + block as soon as an enemy attacks me--is that it, or is there more to it?

When you fill your rage meter up by half, you get a breaker that you use by holding block and pressing forward; you'll see the breaker icon on your rage bar if you have enough filled. When the bar is full, you have two breakers available. That's where some of the strategy comes into play: do you use a breaker, or do you save enough to be able to use Rage?

Just use Rage. It's just better in every way.

Also, I don't know if you guys talked about it yet, but you don't have to do any quarter circles motions. For down + forward moves, you can just press down forward on the d-pad. O_o

That's bullshit. I hardly ever use rage, nor does anyone really ever beat me by using rage.

Every second hit of a block string in Rage is completely unblockable, and unless you're the Flash or somebody with good mobility options, there's nothing stopping your opponent from just running into you and doing ridiculously stupid damage. The chances of avoiding a guy with infinite super armor aren't exactly in your favor. Not in a game that relies so heavily on low/mid/high mixups.

Plus, it knocks back, and is pretty much guaranteed damage, which makes it a round ender. It's a more efficient use of the rage bar. Not to mention I think it's the only way to avoid Superman's infinite.

Liu Kang originally had a non-fatal finisher on account of, being a monk, he did not kill people. That since has changed, obviously.

Pretty sure thats exactly how it is. Like with Shao Kahn (yeah, not a DC char I know, but Im guessing this is what was done for them all) it looked like he had a permanant shadow on him. So it was slightly darker. Not so awesome. I must say though Im finding this game extremely fun, a great rent indeed. I like it so much more than other MK games Ive played.

I'm glad I didn't pay for this. I was looking forward to it but inability to play straight through story mode with one character plus the fucking cheating AI have pissed me off to no end. The lack of unlockable characters has only served to compound this.

It is unfair. Sometimes I will absolutely trounce them but a good amount of the time they will spam the fuck out of moves and pull things off in succession with insane speed and precision and block all your moves.

God the fucking MK AI. This is the stuff of Legends here. Me and my friends talk of it anytime were playing a fighting game, we call it Mortal Kombat Syndrome. Basically its this.

    Round 1 - FIGHT!

"HOLY SHIT I JUST KICKED THAT GUYS ASS!"

    Round 2 - FIGHT!

"...WHAT THE FUCK DUDE! OH MY FUCKING GOD! HE WAS SO FUCKING EASY THE FIRST TIME WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!"

    Final Round - FIGHT!

    "FUCK THIS GAME!"

    THAT is Mortal Kombat Syndrome.

As annoying as the MK games got, nothing topped Street Fighter's AI which was basically "charging? what's that? no, I'll just use this move instantly". On the plus side, it's cause for some pretty hilarious sights if you're not concerned with winning the match. Things like Blanka rolling across the screen three times in a row (back, forth and back again) or Guile firing off his sonic booms so fast that the sound byte doesn't even have time to fully play out (sonic b-sonic boom!). Oh! And Flash Kicks from a standing position, that one always made me laugh.
