...as gamers, we've historically set aside premise, story, graphics, and a whole hell of a lot as long as the game is awesomely fun...
...but seriously, what was the last good Mortal Kombat game? UMK3? What was that, like 12 years ago? I have no problem with MK vs DC, I have a problem with the fact that a good fighting game hasn't come out of this franchise in over a decade.
Agreed, I would like to be excited by this, but the 3D Mortal Kombats have all stunk more than a stable full of horses with very loose bowels.
I love how people are saying the 3d MK's have sucked but don't give any reasons for it, I still think that MK Deception was easily one of the best Mortal Kombats released, it just had the a decent fighting system, great fatalities and just was pretty fun to play.
I'd guess that those people haven't actually PLAYED any of the last 3 MK games. That's why they don't give any reasons. Bunch of parrots.
OH MY GOD....what has just happened, this has to be the best fuckton news ever...i think if like my family was killed in some freak car accident i would be okay. It would kinda of be like the universe is balancing it self out...wow omg this is to good. GOD I WANT IT ALL OVER ME

A friend of mine had Deadly Alliance and Deception. I don't how to describe it really, but to me the fighting engine just felt so stiff. We always would end up just putting in Soul Calibur 2 instead.
Puzzle Kombat was the best damn thing in their though, that was legitmately fun and awesome.
I think the main problem with MK is that the controls are more casual-oriented, but most casuals are turned off by bloody decapitations.
You're wrong. You're so wrong.
Dunno about you, but my mom, girlfriend and co-workers are all turned off by bloody decapitations.
areyou saying "casual" when you mean "female"?
I'm meaning "casual" as "not people who post on Penny Arcade, don't intimately know the ins and outs of the industry and would be willing to play video games but are kinda intimidated by most of them."
You know, the folks helping make the Wii a success.

There are people in the gaming world between your mom and Penny Arcade, you know.
Like, I don't know, every college student in the US. Or for that matter, pretty much every person between 13 and 23.
The roster will be critical to this game. People will buy a sub par fighting game with the promise of being able to play as cool DC favorites.
Green Arrow and Green Lantern will make this hard to ignore.
I wonder though if something will be in place to avoid making it a DC fighting game that ignores MK all together. Because I know my friends and I would just put Supes up against Batman, or Aquaman up against Green Lantern the whole time.

There's no way this can be good. It looks like it's DC's turn to have a Rise of the Imperfects.
Plus, no fatalities in a Mortal Kombat game? Fuck that, man.
Ahhh good to see the game already looks like shit from 10 seconds of game play, also lol at Evander's xbox live excuse of "dude I am too busy having sex with girls to be good at video games".

Video Interview with Ed Boon wherein he tries to explain the batshit crazy storyline the game follows and also how anyone could possibly fight Superman (it's magic!).
That trailer's only viewable in the US. Anyone have an alternative?

Also, interestingly... Boon said stage fatalities are out, meaning the stage hazards found in the previous couple MK games that can quickly end a round won't be in there. He didn't say anything about fatalities being out all together.

Better than my limited experience with the 3d mortal kombats. The animations didn't look as stuttered, like MK's dial-a-combos, so maybe they overhauled the whole system.
I really have no vested interest in MK or DC, so if the game is full of giant destructible environments, and you get to see dudes punching the crap out of other dudes while breaking through a wall and falling 4 stories to the ground, it might actually be kind of fun.
I just watched that interview - It sounded like he had NO IDEA what the hell he was saying. 'Magic or something makes Superman vulnerable to Scorpion.'* OR SOMETHING? Where did you hire your writers?
*Not exact quote. Close enough.
He uses 'Kinda' and 'Something' a lot. I don't think he has a clue what he's trying to convey, other then hyping the game.
I dont really think he needs to explain why Scorpion can fight Superman with anything other than "Because it's a videogame."
I'd like Superman to be one of the bosses, heat ray, really strong...but there's obviously a way to make him FEEL really powerful while making it balanced.

A Marvel vs. DC game would be the greatest thing to happen to gaming since Rock Band.
With the ENDLESS charecters, imagine a Marvel vs. DC game, with a "Charecter Store".
With weekly additions of new charecters.
Hell, the X-Men side of Marvel ALONE would be a year of DLC.
Quick, someone make a photoshop with Spiderman and Batman staring down each other! Marvel vs. DC would probaly outsell any game ever made. Just the annoucement of such a game would crash the internet.
This does not look necessarily bad.
I like the fighting-while-flying-through-the-air aspect.
kinda reminded me of the DBZ games.
My how the fighting game market has dried up when that comment is meant as a compliment.
So where is Tekken 6, anyway? And when are we going to get the Tekken/DOA crossover?

Never. Itagaki HATES tekken.
The hope is, however, that there will be a Virtua Fighter vs Tekken spin off. Sega has talked about wanting to do it before, Namco has talked about wanting to do it before. Both companies have collaborated several times, and Yu Suzuki is interested in it. I don't doubt that, one day in the future, we'll see VF vs Tekken.
Now, if that game is Fighters Megamix 2 or not remains to be seen.
EDIT: Likewise, VF vs DOA is also highly likely. Itagaki is a HUGE fan of Virtua Fighter, and said that his inspiration for the DoA series is a more modern, fast paced version of VF. DoA's history is very closely tied to VF, in fact. Itagaki originally wanted to work for Sega, but chose Tecmo because of location. He deeply admires Yu Suzuki, and went and asked permission personally to use the Fighting Vipers engine (which was a modified VF2 engine) in order to make the first DOA.
Itagaki compares VF to a fine, traditional japanese sushi meal, while DOA is a meal you'd get at a sushi bar. Both are good, but they're aimed at different markets.

That's the problem with the genre though. If you're not one of the established franchises, you aren't going to be able to put out something with the depth of Virtua Fighter right off the bat. How long has it been since a new challenger emerged as a legitimate threat to the fighting game crown?
As someone who really liked Deception though, I'll definitely give this a shot. The 3d MK games have been a good alternative to the more serious VFs and Tekkens of the world.

But the animation looks good. However, as we all know, you can't really judge a fighter based off animations.
I still maintain that this could be good.

(not ruling out that it could be good, but I'm having a hard time seeing why they'd even do this.)

man, even when I saw this I wasn't fully convinced it was real. it's so bizarre.

It is up at gamespot. Better quality too.
As long as it's balanced well.
Anyway, I'll probably ignore this unless it's casual-friendly.
Of course.

Mortal Kombat is the definition of casual friendly. The last few games have been some of the better post-drinking games I've found.
