    Diablo3.com becomes Diablofans.com! Blizzard acquires diablo3.com.
    Apr 30, 2008 - 8:26 PM - by mockery
    Ahoy there, fellow Diablo fans!

Well, there's no point in beating around the bush any longer, so let's get right down to it. A few months ago we were contacted by Blizzard in regards to the Diablo3.com domain name. While they appreciate all the work that's been put into running this big Diablo fan community over the years, they still want the domain name. Hmm, I wonder why? Now before you get all up in arms about it, allow me to explain a few things.

First off, this fan site isn't going anywhere, it's just getting a new name: Diablofans.com! Blizzard is actually being really cool about it, giving us all the time we need to make it a smooth transition before we hand the old domain over to them. So be sure to update all of your bookmarks and point 'em to diablofans.com instead. Your user accounts will all still be perfectly functional and, along with this new site name, we'll soon have a big site redesign up and running as well. A new name, a new look. Huzzah!

Secondly, while Blizzard is indeed acquiring the diablo3.com domain name, they told me that this shouldn't be considered an announcement for the Diablo 3 game we've been waiting for all these years. They acquire new domains all the time. While this is true, I personally can't help but think that this is a confirmation of sorts that they're working on the next Diablo game. Sure, they can claim it's because they want to protect their intellectual properties 'n what have you, but I can't imagine they would all of a sudden be so interested in the diablo3.com domain if they weren't working on a new Diablo 3 game behind the scenes.

On a final note, I want to thank all of you guys who've made this community so strong over the years. It's only going to get better around here and I hope you'll all stick with us. One of the nice things about this whole name-change ordeal is that Blizzard really appreciates the fact that we're a dedicated fan site and we'll be working with them much more closely in the future to bring you the latest Diablo game news.

It's funny, I've had so many offers over the years from people who wanted to pay a lot o' cash for the diablo3.com domain name and I wasn't even willing to consider then. I set out to have a great Diablo fan site because I simply loved the Diablo series. Fortunately, with the help of some great people on the staff and fans like you, we accomplished just that. But when Blizzard came around asking for the domain, I was excited about it both as a Diablo fan and for their recognition of all the work we've put into the site. Fortunately for us, the diablofans.com domain name was available and it fit perfectly in line with the intentions of this site, so I registered it and here we are. Diablo3.com will still be active for a few more months so everybody can have a chance to get used to the new Diablofans.com domain. After that, it will simply point to the Blizzard.com homepage... at least until they're ready to use it for something more worthwhile. One of the nice things about the new diablofans.com domain is that it's all-encompassing. Instead of the site just being for people waiting on Diablo 3, it can serve as the main hub for *all* current and future Diablo games. Isn't it nice to know you'll always have a place online you can call home? Hey, even Diablo's demon minions need a place to hang their hats too.

Alright, that's all the news for now. I'm sure all of this news is gonna get the Diablo 3 rumor mill running like a mad banshee... so have fun discussing the announcement with your fellow Diablo fans!

    Well, well.

I guess this is news and not news at the same time. Blizzard is indeed buying Diablo3.com, but they're not saying it's for Diablo 3. The countdown was just to let everyone know they're moving the fansite. OH WELL. I remain hopelessly optimistic.

Urahonkey, don't listen to those who praise WoW. If you found it boring at 60, hate raids, hate gear ladders, hate group dueling to be good at pvp, then just don't do it.

MMOS are very flawed because all it is in the end is Time = gear. Lots of people would love to get you to play their favorite mmo, because they want more people to be addicted like they are so they aren't the only ones stuck in the game.

MMOs are like crack. "Just try it once and you'll be hooked for sure" "Theres something for everybody"(2 flavors which boil down to gear).

So time = gear. It's an MMO, and a game driven by character advancement. Gear = success, then, because you're achieving your goal. Thus I am led to believe that you purport that time = success. Who would've guessed it? Putting forth your effort and time into doing something well, actually helps you do well at it...

The sheer genius of it confounds me! =p

Sorry to make fun, but that's a terrible argument for swaying people to not try a game. Any game - sports included. Almost anything you want to do..uh, ever, will require your time. Gaming(MMOs or not) is just another of those pursuits.

That doesn't mean WoW's end game couldn't be a lot better. I don't think going to EQ's extreme is the right way to do it, but there was a lot more mystery and it took players a lot longer to figure everything out in that game.

WoW, as you level up, is a really great and enjoyable experience, you have the feeling that you're getting equipment to accomplish something. In the end, you just feel like you're running on a hamster wheel getting equipment not so much to do something with it, but to keep up with everyone else who is also doing that hobby.

I guess I just feel that at the end game what you should be doing is something that's actually impacting the realm in a real way (as PVP made a real impact on you while you were leveling your character, constantly dealing with marauding groups or the always popular solo rogue... or it was this way on a pvp server anyhow). Battlegrounds are like... pretend MMO. Just like instances. They really are.

Massive realm impacting stuff. That's what I want the end game of an MMO to be about. Scores of horde nefariously trying to flood Lakeshire with lava while the Alliance desperately try to fend them off. Shit like that.

Level 60 should have been the rite of passage to enter a war that raged across Azeroth. Instead it was about lining up again to hope X dropped this time and checking the AH. When the expo came out I briefly tried it again, noting that now there apparently WAS some sort of war going on, for which I should collect cloth.

    ?

Yeah. The end game of WoW could be better. Time=Gear is not all an MMO is about.

That's why I miss Asheron's Call. Everyone could get gear, that wasn't the problem. It was the leveling that sucked!

I've never played Guild Wars, but didn't they try to solve that as well?

Shows you what people think of that kind of idea though, both those games are not played much anymore.

If you read the forums on the site formally known as diablo3.com, the owner is pretty convinced that Diablo 3 is going to be announced at Blizzard's paris event this year, which ends on the same day Diablo 2 and it's expansion came out. I think the day is June 29, but I could be wrong.

Edit: and Joystiq and Kotaku have yet to pick this up. I think Blizzard buying diablo3.com is a legitimate news item, I'd send in a tip but I really do not want to drop my email address and I'm at work.

Nice to know a guild that's not big enough to raid just gets lumped into the 'shitty guilds' category, apparently.
    Who said that?

I guess I read it between the lines every time someone said 'sounds like you're in a shitty guild!' to someone talking about the problems with WoW end-game.
At any rate, that's not right. My guild is about 8 or 10 people strong and we did raids just fine. Even organized 25 man raids with friendly guilds.
Well, great if that's possible for you. I played on Tichondrius. Before going live it was the beta server, after going live it attracted the most pvp-intense guilds, no doubt partially because it also had both the blizzard employee 'unofficial' guild and all their tag-along groups (friends or otherwise). Joining some big guilds raid group? Please, what a laugh, why would a big competing guild want to share loot and raid space with non-guildies? Pick-up? Obviously the game MUST have changed drastically, because that was never going to happen on Tich.
In fact, our regular Kara raids included 3 people from other guilds that came with us every week. There are fallacies about raiding that seem to be accepted as truth: 1, that you need to be a bunch of arrogant fucks to raid successfully and 2, that you need to be a big guild. I've seen those proven wrong again and again.
Well, the game wasn't like this when I played it at all, and such a thing as a 'kara raid' didn't exist. If it's fixed, great, but the end game was broken and boring when I played it. From the sounds of it the new end game lets you raid in smaller (MUCH smaller... 8 to 10 guys?) than the old end game did. If it's fixed, great, but that doesn't change how broken it was when I played.

There's nothing better than 'Kara' stuff end game? No end game that needs fifty guys or any stupid shit like that and drops loot that makes Kara stuff look like paper mâché? Good changes if so.

There is better than Kara, but for day to day playing, Kara gear is more than sufficient.

Also, from now on the biggest raids we'll see are 25 man. Blizzard themselves have pretty much forsaken 40 mans agreeing it became less "A bunch of friends working together" and more "faceless mass of people".
And there's still stuff like Zul'Aman which is a 10 man raid, and heroic dungeons which are fine if you only have a few hours (and Black Morass if you barely have ONE hour.)

Still, WoW's not for everyone and I make no apologies for it's bad gameplay ideas, nor am I gonna tout it as anything more than "kinda fun". It's not for everyone and if you don't like it? That's fine.

Back on topic: So the announcement was just "Blizzard wanted the name"? Was there a reason they waited if Blizzard insisted this was not confirmation of Diablo 3?

My guess: Diablo 3 will be announced soon. I mean, why else would Blizzard all of a sudden want the domain? Chances are they will use it for news updates on Diablo 3. They just don't want the guy who used to own the domain to be the one to break the news. But in the end, who knows? If they end up not using the domain, it will be very disappointing. Also, Blizzard cares too much about their fans to just not make the game. They see how popular the site was and know that people want a third game. I have the utmost faith Blizzard will not let me down. They haven't in the past ever.

There is definitely skill involved in playing. Your character effectiveness is a product of gear and skill. A lot of people try to stack gear to make up for deficiency in skill, but skill is still necessary and something that is refined with playtime. If you had no foreknowledge of the game and I let you log into my account and play my level 70 character you would suck hard for some time.

Now, just as gear can't completely replace skill, skill can't completely replace gear. I don't care how good someone is at their class, if they show up for a heroic difficulty dungeon in trash gear they aren't going to cut it.

As a side note, the last time I played a Tiger Woods game you had to grind for character stats and new gear. Sounds awfully familiar...

While this is clearly evidence that Blizzard have decided that they at some point in the future have an interest in making Diablo 3, or further diablo titles, unfortunately I imagine it might mean that they have decided it will be their next project after they finish wasting time on Starcraft, which would likely mean we would see a finished product in 2010/11 or something.

As such its a bit harsh to take the guys domain off him. At this stage it would have been far more reasonable to contact him and say "We'd like to have your domain back, but you can keep using it until we plan to exploit it ourselves, when that point comes we will inform you and assist you in transitioning to diablofans.com."

I guess theres a slim chance they are just being very nice and actually giving him time to establish a name presence at diabofans.com before they actually switch on their diablo3.com and make a big announcement. I do hope they have something to say, I was so sad when they didn't announce a new Diablo and announced Starcraft instead. The RTS genre has moved on leaps and bounds since Starcraft over the years, fans of it have many great new games to play. The dungeon hack item collecting and stuff genre? Not so much, Diablo 2 LOD is still its pinnacle, and I was hoping Blizzard might breathe some life back into it. Well, maybe Dungeon Siege 2 did good things too, but it didnt have the heart of Diablo 2.

In fact, if I'm not remembering it wrong, Blizzard themselves came out and said they were working on Diablo 3 at one point, but around the time Titan Quest came out, they took a long look at it and decided it wasn't going the direction they were wanting it to go.

Pfft. This is the last time I play your games. This is a big disappointment. I'm a patriot of the internet, I am. Where's my medal? My parade? No, all I get is abuse for my actions in the pursuit of betterment of humanity.

If you're a patriot of the internet, then this is exactly what you'd expect. Not the silly shit you just listed.
