Are there any builds in this game that dont spam one or two skills over and over and over and over yet?
You could try a martial arts assassin. Haven't made one myself, but they seem a lot more involved than other builds.
Yeah, they're pretty great. A lot of mobs will flat out waste you until you get dragon tail so you gotta use burst of speed and cloak of shadows and just try to get those charges and then release them to thin the crowd.
On any given encounter with my Tiger Strike / Dragon Tail assassin, I have to do all this: re-cast burst of speed and venom, double-check if my shadow master is still alive, switch to the charge up skill I want and switch my right click skill back to dragon tail. I will frequently have to switch to cloak of shadows and mind blast for mob control, and I also have three hotkeys to change charges, and typically mix tiger and cobra strike before releasing. A level 3 pheonix is good for mob control too since it freezes everything.
Just a small warning on Dragon Tail: It's nigh-useless in Hell, even when charged up with Tiger Strike and wearing upgraded Gore Riders. Fire resistance is a bitch. You can rip your way through Normal and Nightmare easily enough, but Dragon Tail in Hell is absolutely underwhelming.
Fuckin dammit, I've been wondering why no one ever mentioned that skill. I figured since shit worked out with my lightning-zon in all situations except LI's that Dragon Tail would be okay too though. I've played this build a bunch, but the ladder always rolled over before I could get to hell.
Also, why does everyone hate Act 3 so much? The wildernesses in other acts are infinitely more horrible since they're just square and boring and you have to fiigure some way to systematically search them, and once you get to lower kurast (which takes less time due to only having to search two linear wildernesses, and there's only like one thing to find in the spider jungle) it becomes one of the most fun acts due to the types of monsters and the difficulty involved. The temples are great, the council is pretty amusing to kill, all those heirophant thingies cast dangerous spells at the same time as massing together so you can kill them hilariously quickly, and there are thorn hulks. The only sucky parts are the sewer and bug swarms, but some people even like those (the swarms, not the sewer) so vOv.
Also I like the scenery and atmosphere the best out of all the acts.
I like act 3 a LOT more than Act 1. I can't remember if I mentioned this before, but Act 1 feels like a Lawnmower simulator to me. Big square mostly empty green maps that you traverse back and forth killing baddies in. Act 3 felt like you were actually GOING somewhere, and I liked it a lot as a result.
Also, I just reached level 30 with my Sorc... and only now do I truly understand what's awesome about Frozen Orb. It's... awesome.
You know, despite the hours and hours and hours (and on and on) I've spent with D2, I've barely played Act 3. What I played I liked, but no one ever seemed to want to stick around there, and so I never really played that much of it. I mean, I'm sure I've done all the quests, but it's still a bit of a blur.
So I have renewed faith in pub games. I entered a random game in act 5, ranted a bit about not seeing any 3 sock helms (I saw one at the merchants, only +19 to life, so I tried to find a better one, so I kept re-entering games, no luck) and the creator I guess asked if I was looking for MF, which I was, and gave me a flawless topaz, score!
That's not all though, it seems he was working on "Spirit" (is that a noun?) and I happened to have the last rune he needed, so I gave it to him. He then helped rush me through Izzy and Meph, and hopefully future runs as well.
p.s. If you find a 3 socket helm with decent stats, please buy it for me. I will pay you back in gold or gems if you like. Same goes with armor, but for 4 socket.

It's very easy to rush through Act 3 quickly with an organized group. And while I like the act, I certainly wouldn't stop and smell the roses until at least nightmare.

keep in mind you can't make a runeword in an item that has any magical properties; i.e. blue/yellow/gold/green.
It has to be straight up blank.
EDIT: I should note it can be ethereal. A few of the runewords make the item indestructible, so finding an ethereal item is actually beneficial. Another example is for your mercs. They don't lose durability on their items; so like the Insight runeword, find your elite polearm with 4 sockets ethereal for that bonus to stats, and it'll just be better.

Spirit is an killer runeword for swords or shields requiring relatively easy to find runes that gives AWESOME bonuses.

The downside is that the shield with the lowest strength requirements that you can make Spirit in is a Monarch (unless you're a Paladin), which requires something like 156 strength. It's still an awesome runeword though, but that requirement is steep.
I kind of wish Blizzard would have made some more runewords or retuned the old ones so players would have an alternative to MFing for hours on end to have gear that is actually viable for use in hell. Barbarians and bow using Amazons are probably the two classes that suffer the most from the "new" hell difficulty.

Ok guys, last time I played this with PA, we tried to get an all-pally game going, but we never played together more than twice. Anyone want to try it again? I'm on East but West is welcome to try it too.
The idea is to roll up 5-8 paladins and each focus on a different aura that you'll leave up all the time. Also everyone gets a different Act 2 merc for their individual auras as well, so when everyone is on you have 10+ auras active on everybody and each player is a tiny god.
You could also have two or three druids, each focusing on different aura spirits too. And there are a couple runewords that are fairly cheap that offer additional auras as well, including Insight (Meditation) and the Edge bow (tir-tal-amn, Thorns).
The downside is that usually you all have to be on for it to work well, and also progress together. Some people will have to take less useful auras, which may not be viable for single player. But then, there's nothing stopping you from mastering other auras too, and just having your one aura for group play.
Anybody interested? I would volunteer to take a crap aura if I need to.
If we can't get enough people to do it, it's still fun to play with three, each with one element aura, and name yourselves Frost_Lad, Shock_Lad and Fire_Lad. And then join random games online and roleplay constantly.
"Do you require my assistance, FROST LAD?"
"No, FIRE LAD, I have the situation well in hand!"
So, in a bout of dubious luck, I got two Lances of Yaggai ( http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/normal/uspears.shtml ) today. Unique Brandistocks. I gave one to my merc because, hell, I don't have anything better for him. Does anybody want the other one?
I also got a Steelclash kite shield... which I"m using on my assassin, even though it gives +1 to paladin skills. I got it from GAMBLING. Holy shit!

I'd recommend ignoring the existence of the merc and item auras. Cause if you remove Meditation, Thorns, Prayer, Defiance, Blessed Aim, Holy Freeze, and Might from the list of Paladin auras you're left with a lot of meh ones and not too many good ones.
Basically you'd have just the 'Resist X', Salvation, Cleansing, Vigor, Redemption, Holy Fire/Shock, Concentration, Sanctuary, Fanaticism, Conviction. Plus a PC would probably have a better aura than that granted from a merc/item anyway.

If anyone cares, I'm chilling in papally/wang while I look over my skills and decide which of the prayer synergy auras I'm going to claim. (as prayer is a synergy for Holy Bolt)
:edit: unsurprisingly, Meditation seems to be the best option. Of course, I could just grab Prayer, mana sucking as it is, so I could also synergize up Fist of the Heavens or something.
:edit2: wait, I can ALREADY fully synergize FotH while maxing HolyBolt and also grabbing Meditation. Hmmmmmmmm. Wait, or not, I suck at maths.

Some questions, because I've kind of dived into the deep end here:
I'm guessing Battle.net characters can't be used in a single player game, and all you need to do is start a one player game on B.net to play on your own?
I'm a level 21 druid right now, and all I see for weapon recommendations are for 70+ druids, in builds and whatnot. What kind of weapons should I be looking for right now, and what's the best way to go about getting hold of them? I'm on my way to being a Fury Werewolf Druid, if that helps.
Ive kinda wanted to try a thrower pally. You can throw a good javelin, have it be affected by a good aura, when not throwing you can zeal shit, and still be able to carry your shield. I wonder if that will all work though... hmmn

It'll probably get boring since you're hitting one monster at a time, with no fancy lightning damage and shit like an amazon. Even if you get yourself some pierce it'd be kinda lame.

Will Magic Find work with Minions and Hirelings?
Yes. When you make a kill, you get the Magic Find % of yourself only. When a Hireling gets a kill, it uses the combined Magic Find of the Hireling and you.

So apparently if your Merc kills something, it uses their Magic Find + your Magic Find.
And here I thought I was screwing myself whenever my Merc killed stuff (everything).
I really have no idea how MF works with mercs, and i'd love to know too. I wonder if it's worth putting some MF gear on my merc, he's got a 4slot armor that could use some perfect topaz.

I really have no idea how MF works with mercs, and i'd love to know too. I wonder if it's worth putting some MF gear on my merc, he's got a 4slot armor that could use some perfect topaz.
