Cruisin' thru Toronto

I'm going on a trip real soon and I have to pass thru Toronto to reach my destination and I wondered.. exactly how bad is the trafic on highway 401 in the GTA? Should I avoid it before or after a certain hour? I was told things get better after 7PM, but I want to double check. Thanks in advance for your replies.

The 401 can be pretty jammed between 7-11am and 3-7pm, but it's usually not too bad outside those hours. I usually try to avoid the 401-400 interchange, as slowdowns seem to occur there really frequently. If you really want to avoid the worst of the 401's delays, you can always take the 407 to go across the north end of the city. I've never seen the 407 more than half full, but it's a toll highway. It usually costs $10 or less without a transponder, depending on the length of time you're on the road. If I'm heading to my Dad's place and the free routes are jammed up, I'll take the 407 and they just send me a bill in the mail.
Also, expect some slowdowns near the airport no matter what time you are driving.
Ahh, yeah, forgot about that. I'm usually only in the eastern half of the highway system. The 427 is the highway that goes to the airport, there's often some kind of congestion around there, practically at all hours.
