Lets talk kit, my friends! Acoustics, Acoustic-Electrics, Electric Guitars, Bass Guitars...hell even BC Rich counts!
So you just welded a Theremin onto your Squier? Rad lets see it!
Well I just picked up one of these suckers last week.
Fender American Deluxe Tele--I really dig the noiseless pups and the S-1 switching system is
a neat thing to just sort of "have" but its nothing major, it may get you towards a decently
crunchy tone or a Franz Ferdinand sweet twang.
On the effect side of things--new toy!
Fuzz Factory! For that extra squealy and needly Muse sound--its a little finicky and spendy--but well worth it for experimental sounds.
Also, videos of gigs/ bedroom shred wanking/ etc. are encouraged

I recently bought one of these (410):
It's a pretty clean amp and after comparing it with the Vox AC30 I like it a lot better.
Are bass guitars allowed in this thread too?
Why not?
But man, I know absolutely nothing about the technical aspects of guitars like pick-ups and pedals and stuff.
Someone educate my arse.
The best thing about the bass guitar is that you can play it and be the lead singer.
I should dust off my old acoustic again. I do love the guitar, but my harmonica is just so much easier to carry around.

When I set the volume on the amp decently high, there is a constant, semi-annoying buzz that occurs.
Any idea why this happens or how it could be fixed?
Although the preliminary answer here is deal with it--since without noiseless pickups and some specific equipment there will be a cycling buzz with electric guitars
One sec as I run off to the garage to check...
ESP LTD B-50 bass guitar and an Ibanez Soundwave 20 Bass Amp.
Neither of them are particularly expensive pieces of equipment, so it might just be that.
Edit: Oh, I see. That's fine. Just making sure it wasn't something I was doing wrong.
I know nothing about the technical stuff, though I think Les Pauls are pretty. Myself, I play a Stratocaster knock-off by Peavey.
I would love a vintage 60's Ice Tea Les Paul though
I seem to have terrible luck with my cords in that they don't last very long for me.

Say hello to Fender buddy
http://www.fender.com/
Buy better cords :P
I'm playing a black SG Standard, black Epiphone PR5E, metallic blue Yamaha Pacifica, and a black '85 Ibanez Roadstar II. The Pacifica is about as good as a low-end Fender Strat, but I can never get the G-string to sound quite right. The Roadstar II was an old broken guitar we found on Vancouver Island and fixed up; I can't compare it to the stock models (haven't played them), but it has a nice twangy sound.
My cousin is picking up an SG Special either tomorrow or Tuesday (renting for a few weeks before he makes a decision). The Special is the cheapest Gibson SG model, is there anything in particular to watch out for?
Now though?
Try before you buy for sure.
Look out for bad seams between the neck and the body and make sure the frets aren't jagged/uneven
One of the last cords I got was supposed to be one of the high quality cords, lasted only 2 weeks.

Hmm, then I'd suggest learning something about electronics and fixing up your old ones. The kind with the metal covers that screw off are pretty easy to repair, because nine time out of ten (for me anyway), something came loose in there.
I think it was the wiring that screwed up in the cord, when it first starts screwing up I have to bend the cord around.
My guitar friend suggested getting a specific type of cord, I forget exactly what kind he said.
Also I don't think I have any of my old ones.

edit: 8 string for reference and cause why the hell not
only if you steal them from guitar center though
I care less about how complicated my bassline is, and rather care more about how well it compliments for the song. If it calls for something complicated awesome, if something simple is what's needed though, that's cool too.
This is all you need to know about my goals with guitar
Well, pickups simply are how the notes you play are picked up and sent to the amplifier. Single pickups are generally brighter in sound (what you see Strats or Teles) and humbuckers are double pickups that produce a warmer sound (Les Paul, Jazzmaster). Some guitars have both or different alignments with a selector to pick a particular pickup or all.
Pedals affect the signal that goes from the guitar to the amp. The original sound effects on guitar were either created through the amps themselves or through studio play. Eventually pedals were developed to allow these sounds to be turned on or off at will. There are still analog pedals out there but many pedals now are digital. Some people swear only by the analog, but digital seems to be cheaper and easier to use out of the box.
There's all kinds of effects you can achieve with pedals, and it depends on your imagination and musical style for what you'd want to use. I'd suggest if you're looking for a mix bag of effects to have is a distortion/overdrive (if your amp doesn't already do this), a delay, and a phaser or echo to taste.
There are technical differences between how a tone is overdriven and distortion, but the basics is that distortion generally gives you a brighter sound, while overdrive can be anywhere from a little fuzz to full on noise, something warmer.
A delay pedal simulates what used to be done in the studio, tape delaying and looping. So with a good delay pedal you can play something, loop it or delay, and then play something else over it. You can also use it to create soundscapes from simple chords or arpeggios.
A phaser or flanger creates a sweeping sound from splitting the signal.
Part of the fun of playing with effects if finding ones you like and combining them in strange ways.
Oh god do I want it
And I learned a good lesson today, pissing off the drummer by playing natural harmonics on a bass can be funny as hell
Dudes got some awesome stage moves.
And thanks for those explanations, thanimations.
Spoiler'd for huge.
Of course when I picked up my baby I ripped out the crapola pick ups and threw in the EMG 81/85 set. Now she's a screamer. I'm in the process of a luthier burning "Melinda" in cursive writing on back of the headstock and possibly putting some sort of material in it to match the same effect of the "Ibanez" logo. I'm a fan of .11 gauge Nickel Wound DR strings. They have an awesome sound to it and the EMGs just pick them up so damn well, being active pick ups and all.
My amp? It's an embarrassment. I bought it due to lack of funds and have been using it since but I am not a fan. It's the old Crate GT1200 head with a GT4X12 cab. The cab is sick but the head is garbage. I'm running the Boss Noise Suppressor through it along with the infamous Boss Chromatic Tuner pedal. My dream rig would be,
A Peavey 6505+ head with matching cab, but the Crate cab does just fine. I'd use that for all my metal shredding needs.
But my more "interesting" idea that a friend of mine recently showed me is picking up the new Boss GT10 effects processor and running it through two Fender Hot Rod 40w 1x12s. Just put the GT10 on stereo mode and the combo can fill up a chamber hall. The effects sound amazing, it can get fucking loud, and it just sounds so god damn clean. That would be used for my more Opeth, Devin Townsend, and Porcupine Tree needs.
On a side note, I've been the Assistant Manager at a Guitar Center for over two years now. In the past people would always buy me Guitar Center gift cards for holidays. But now that I work there and I get an awesome discount? I haven't received a single gift card.
EDIT: And if I had to buy a Fender guitar, it would be the new Telecaster American standard, in white, with a maple neck. But if I had thousands of dollars lying around? Oh god. In Charcoal....
Here is my guitar:
Gibson Les Paul Vintage Mohogony
played through a Roland Blues Cube BC-60
Got that Roland for free too
I can't find a picture of the actual guitar I have, I think the company's stopped making it.
However, I would like something more metal as a future purchase.
Something like this:
Tell me more.
This is the guitar I want:
The problem is Fender doesn't sell it in Daphne Blue in North America anymore, another great color slowly disappearing from their catalog. In order to get it with the matching head, I'll have to find it used.
Nevermind, found it at:

Fernandez Sustainer bucker in the neck
Bare Knuckle Nailbomb bucker in the bridge
3 way killswitch
The covering is a cracked mirror finished over with clearcoat of some kind
Most importantly, its got a Midi XY pad built into it.
Aaaand
heres whats left of it after Matt threw it into a strobe light :x
I remember that from chat, it definitly is a beauty.

My bass rig is a GK backline head (300 watts solid-state) running into an Avatar 2x12 cab (4 ohm), coupled with a cheap SWR 100 watt 1x15 combo amp to make a quasi-stack. For effects i've got a boss bass overdrive and chorus pedals. My basses are an MIM fender jazz with a badass bass II bridge and DR strings, and an epiphone t-bird also with DR strings.
It's a decent rig considering it's on the budget for the most part. Im hoping to buy a legitimate stack once I have enough disposable income consisting of a GK 700rbII head (480 watts) with an Avatar 2x10 and 2x12 cab each in 8 ohms.
I've played several instruments in my life, however i have dedicated myself to bass for the past two and a half years, i've played in a community jazz ensemble, and the one at my current college. I am in a band which is probably more of a project now since we've only had two gigs ever and haven't rehearsed since january.
At some point in my life I want to learn the upright-contra bass to fully manifest my developing love for jazz.
I need to drop some monies into this and stop buying pointless crap.
Also stupid bills, I hate you.
I have a MIM fat strat and was thinking about getting something a little different. This seemed a lot different, but I don't know if it's just a gimmick.
If I could buy a guitar for under $800, and I am pretty beginner (but getting pretty decent at running through blues scales and playing some solo riff tabs) but just want to blow some poker money on something...what should I get?
