I kept getting confused as to what software version I should get so I ask ye members of the forums what I should get from newegg. I cannot tell what version is best, all I really need is Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and publisher, which I assume are all under microsoft Office. Someone please provide a newegg link with your advice.
So theres:
Home and Student AE Retail: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote $249 AUD Retail (3 pc license)
Professional AE Retail: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, OutLook $299 AUD Retail (3 pc license)
Then there is office SBE, Basic and Pro normal retail editions starting at $399 AUD
Then there are the Medialess Kits (MLK Really just means OEM) that start at $229
The AE versions can be used by anyone as long as its not for business use, the MLK/OEM versions can only be used for business, hence much more expensive.
Then you have Uni/Collage book shops that can sell them VERY cheap, if you are enrolled there.
So yeah, looks like you're stuck with Office Pro AE Retail. Unless you're a uni student.
A complete guide to Office Editions. Note that "version" refers to the year (2003, 2007, etc...) while "edition" the features (Standard, SBE, Pro).
The suggestions above are good. Small Biz Edition is the only one that has everything you're looking for, but is more expensive off the shelf (and licensed for business/making money off it use). If you're a student, there are "Academic Retail" types of the regular Editions that are quite a bit cheaper, or you can piggyback on some educational institutions' Volume Licensing agreements. Or the Ultimate Steal thing.
Call 800.426.9400 and follow the reseller prompts if you want someone to walk you through all the options over the phone.
Also, the "MLK" (media-less license kit) is meant to be a key that upgrades a manufactuer-installed trial version. Be careful with those.
I didn't realize the Ultimate Steal was still going on (and I work for Microsoft), it was supposed to end in April. If anyone is interested, you better jump on that fast.
A thousand times yes. Go for the ultimate steal. I made the purchase a couple weeks ago after I had an all-nighter with open office for a systems analysis assignment. It was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in college so far. Buying Office Ultimate is probably the best 70 CDN I've spent in some time.

Ends April 30. Definitely get it now.
Ha, it actually didn't occur to me that we were still in April. Man, am I'm out of it.
This whole thing just throws into relief how fucked Microsoft's Office product line is. We don't need three different editions as well as being able to buy each component individually.

Don't forget components that are theoretically part of MS Office, but aren't part of any package...like Visio.
Good point. OneNote, too? I don't even know anymore.

OneNote is included in Ultimate, but I'm not sure what other packages it's in.

ProTip: Any time you have to turn something in electronically, turn it in as a .pdf if allowed. I've had too many headaches with wrong file extensions.

The fact that the chart exists is insane. And yes, OneNote is the best note taking program out there. The OS X programs for taking notes don't even come close.
for those who have bought the ultimate steal, will the license work on my second computer? it did for when i bought office 2003 but am unsure about this.
how long does it take for the ultimate steal thing to send you details on how you get Office once you've registered? my sister used her law school e-mail address to register, and so far she hasn't gotten anything...
re: Ultimate Steal
Mine came right away, they don't actually send you the key, you get a link where you put in your order number to access the key, so you don't technically need to wait for the email, you can get your order number off the page and go to the other page. Sorry I can't be more specific or link to these, but I bought it when the program started and don't remember them exactly.
*Snippity-doo-dah* OneNote is also the most amazing program ever.
Limed for absolute truth.
OneNote is the nerdcrack!
I pretty much dump everything in it for work, personal, etc. and keep it on a thumbdrive when I travel. It's like Pimp my Trapper Keeper.

Thank you good sir. You helped me save a bundle on this bundle.
I do what I can.
For me, I saved over $1000AU (Seriously, the Ultimate version was around $1,100 or so and I think it's still about that much.. maybe a tiny bit lower) getting the Ultimate version.
I'm sure I've checked that offer before and it wasn't available to me as it was only certain institutions in the UK, but now it's any @ed.ac address which is pretty awesome.
Microsoft is taking forever to ship out the DVD's I paid a little extra for. Maybe I'm just insane, but I like having physical discs for my PC software/games. Hurry up and get heeeerrreeee. :P
i got my ship notification within a couple days, haven't gotten it yet but its on its way

Actually, My friend needed this and she is the one that saved the bundle. I was very unhappy the "Download now link" didn't show for us. But, we did get the backup dvd ordered so its not a serious issue.
Slight derail, a couple of weeks ago a work colleague brought her computer into work from home saying how it wasn't working. Turned out the motherboard was toasted, anyway.. I recovered all her files like word docs etc from her machine.
Checking them out I was amazed at just how little of the features were used, each document features used were essentially font, underlining and occasional use of bold. Same with excel stuff, really simple stuff.. she hadn't even used stuff like =sum(a1:a10).
So many people buy Office and yet don't have any real use for it. Wordpad or a free office suite is more than all the features they'll ever use. It boggles the mind how MS get people to buy something they don't even need.

If you can upgrade the whole shebang, Small Business Upgrade ($245) is what you want. Full version here for $390.
Do you have any previous versions of Office?
And what specific need for Publisher do you have? Word 2007 has most of the features if you just need simple page layout or brochure work.

edit: for the link-lazy -
Pro Plus and Enterprise are only available in volume programs and built to work with Exchange and Sharepoint.

'Course, one-size-fits-all is pretty much illegal for MS.
My favorite part about OneNote is the Win + S hotkey. Especially with the "convert picture to text" function. That's saved my ass many a time.
