Gentlemen, welcome to EVE Online.
EVE Online is an MMO set in the space region called New Eden, irrevocably separated from Earth after an incident involving the Eve Gate, the one connection between New Eden and Earth.
The game world spans hundreds of solar systems, divided into several regions of varying security level from 1.0 to 0.0 -- the former being highly patrolled by NPC police, the latter being lawless territory for the largest player corporations to war over. It would take several hours at best to travel from one side of the galaxy to another.
Not only is the game world vast in a spatial sense, but in a player sense. Eve Online is entirely unsharded -- every single player shares the same game world, with between 15,000 - 30,000 players online at any given time.
The mechanics of Eve, allowing player corporations to claim sovereignty over resource rich 0.0 space, has led to the emergence of player-created geopolitics that, for many, are far more interesting than the game content itself.
Space is divided into three general security levels on a scale from 1.0 to 0.0. 1.0 to 0.5 is considered high security Empire space, where players who commit aggressive acts against other players will swiftly and inevitably have their ships destroyed by the NPC police organization CONCORD. High security space is not a TOTAL guarantor of safety, but it's close.
0.4 to 0.1 is considered low security Empire space, where aggressive acts can take place without CONCORD retribution, but your personal security status will dive and automated turrets around stations and gates will open fire for a time.
0.0 is lawless space; there is absolutely no retribution for aggression, and most players consider it to be where the real meaty stuff takes place. It also has the best resources in terms of NPC bounties and asteroids to mine in the game. It's completely player-run. Players hold sovereignty over space, and players make the wars.
Here is the map as of 11/15/07, resized so as not to rape your H-scroll. I will be updating it and the rest of this OP periodically (every week or two).

POLITICS
I will attempt to keep this section as accurate as possible, but feel free to correct any inaccuracies about allies/hostilies and update me on even minor wars that are going on.
THE SOUTHEAST - 7-K to Paragon Soul
The RedSwarmFederation - Red Alliance (Russians), Goonswarm (Goons and other shitposters [it's us we're the other shitposters]), Tau Ceti Federation (French).
RSF Allies - Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate (drunks), Against All Authorities (more Russians), United Legion (even more Russians), Knights of the Southerncross, VENOM Alliance, Black-Out, Ethereal Dawn, Intrepid Crossing (?).
Loosely tied to RSF or unaffiliated - Stain Empire (friendly only to AAA as far as I know, predominantly Russian?), Curatores Veritatis Alliance (very friendly with IAC, hostile to most others as they require people to operate NRDS in their space which few others will follow, Amarr RP alliance), Paxton Federation, Sylph Alliance (CVA allies), Kraftwerk (former D2).
THE SOUTHWEST - Period Basis to Fountain
The Greater BoB Community - Band of Brothers, Firmus Ixion, Mercenary Coalition. Non- (or minor) space claiming alliances include RISE, Executive Outcomes, Interstellar Starbase Syndicate, Red Moon Federation (?), STYX (?).
(As a note, I hate the generic terms "The Alliance" and "The Coalition," which is the only reason I'm calling them "GBC" here. I think it's a stupid name for a powerbloc but whatever.)
Unaffiliated - ev0ke and Outbreak (known as Krautbreak).
THE NORTHEAST - Cloud Ring to Deklein
Triumvirate. Others include The Reckoning., Scalar Federation, DeStInY, and Atrum Tempestas Foedus. I know some of those are Triumvirate-installed tenants, but I'm not sure which.
THE NORTHCENTRAL / NORTH DRONE REGIONS - Tribute and Branch to who knows what the fuck
The Old North - Razor Alliance and Morsus Mihi, with smaller allies and tenants including Combined Planetary Union, Phoenix Allliance, and Stella Polar.
As you move east, the friendly relationships start to weaken / blend a bit as far as I know. Hydra, Pure., Mostly Harmless, and Imperial Republic of the North are all either former Old North (MH, IRON) or long-time Old North allies (Hydra, Pure). They're also friendly to Roadkill / Smash though, who I'm not sure has much or any ties to Razor / Morsus Mihi.
THE DRONE REGIONS - who knows what the fuck to who knows what the fuck
Lots of people live here, including the aforementioned Roadkill and Smash, IRON, Mostly Harmless, Rule of Three, Dark Matter Coalition, Ka-Tet, Intrepid Crossing, Ethereal Dawn, Chaos Incarnate., Ultimata Rati0, Project Entropy, and Invictus. If any drone region dweller wants to sort out the politics of it, I'll update this section.
WARS
The long-running war of RSF / Old North versus the GBC, going on for nearly a year now, continues in full swing. As of this posting, little else seems to be going on elsewhere; the North seems largely pacified territorially, between RZR/MM/friends and Triumvirate/friends, and the drone regions war between Roadkill/SMASH and FREGE ended in FREGE's removal from the area. ev0ke and Outbreak were independently attacking Exuro Mortis and other BoB allies in Fountain, but I believe they've won and that's largely come to a close.
Major Events / News of the past months
- GBC allies take 25s and FAT from IAC in Catch, but lose an MC titan in doing so
- RSF allies take 2 RMF stations, 3 RISE stations, and 2 DFC stations in Feythabolis, but lose a Goonswarm mothership in doing so
- MC withdraws from Catch, stating their contract has come to a close; IAC/AAA/RA forces prevent the loss of F4R
- Having lost half of Feythabolis, BoB finds out about a planned RSF attack on multiple stations across Feyth, Esoteria, and Paragon Soul and choose to pull their tenants back to Fountain, Delve, and Period Basis
- RSF proceeds to consolidate the new territory
- Rumors abound that at least a few higher-ups in MC and FIX considered plans to turn on and attack BoB, although how widespread the discussion or anti-BoB sentiment is within those alliances is unknown
Go ahead and make poast. This thread not strictly war / politics, but should be considered more of an Eve General Bullshit thread -- possible mechanics / patch changes, inane tidbits about what you did in Eve today, discussion of how awesome Gallente are, they're all fine here.
Newbies or non-players who like chatting about the game's politics or general news should feel free to hop in, but please keep newbie questions related to joining Merch Industrial or newbie questions related to basic Eve information like skills/fittings questions to the threads linked at the top (which I hope vets will post in, to help the newbies out both in-game and here).
It's also not an RSF vs. BoB thread. Merch Industrial is part of Goonswarm (and thus the RSF), so naturally the information and discussion will tend that way, but honestly I'm always curious what the fuck is going on up north, in the drone regions, or in Providence and Catch. So if you're from there, fill us in, and I'll try to keep the OP updated.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

I'll be making our CAOD [belated] standings reset page once I get back to my place and shop banner image for it. Any ideas for hurf blurf?
Wasn't there already something posted in CAOD about Goon standings reset?
I've always been interested in trying it out, and I've tried the tutorial a few times, but I inevitably end up skipping through it all and flying around until I get bored and delete the game again.
It seems that the only things to do in the game are:
A) Go mining in high security space
Go mining in low security space
C) Go mining in 0.0 space
D) PVP in 0.0 space
E) ????
What else is there to do in the game that would be interesting to do on a daily basis?
If you or someone else want to have a go at making a new OP, go ahead an PM it to me. I copied and pasted the one from the old thread.
Trading, missioning, production (think crafting), R&D, lowsec pirating, empire suicide ganking, import/export, logistics... there's a lot, you just need to get into the game before the puzzle comes together.
PvP exists in all security levels. Mining in highsec is for pubbies and macros. Mining in lowsec is crazy. Mining in 0.0 is for mining alts.
I don't understand why new players think mining is such a big part of EvE. Sure, there's always a dozen Chinese icemacros running in every belt in empire, but actual players spend most of the time shooting at eachother.
Edit:
What does "pubbies" refer to? Why is mining lowsec crazy? Why is mining 0.0 for mining alts? Sorry, I really don't know much about EVE beyond the basics, and I'm very interested to try it. Sadly, I don't know anyone who plays, and I'm afraid if I just jump into the game, I'll get demoralized because I don't know enough and don't know how to get the information I need.
I wish I could get into this, because its a neat concept
If you're flying solo, unless you're looking for a fight, which would entail looking for other people flying solo, you are basically going to lose every fight that you get into because 1) if you were going to win, they are going to know it and are going to try and warp out, and 2) if they didn't warp out, you obviously should have.
But like I said, if you're the one playing predator than you're going to have the outfitting to lock them down when they try to turn tail and run and that's usually going to be all that she wrote.
I'm still in Empire with all of my +3 implants plugged in doing my training before I reapp for Merch (I was kicked out in the end-of-summer cleanup in 2007), what the fuck is good nowadays
It's so BEAUTIFUL and I love the scale of the universe...and the whole player-run economy jazz.
I could play it if it had simulator style controls
A fight can be anywhere from half a second to hours, depending on player skill, ship fittings, and luck. Especially with small ships, where how well the players know how to maneuverer will affect how much damage their ship takes. A fight between two frigates or two cruisers would likely end in a minute or two.
A solo fight against two ships of the same class is very hard to win, unless the other pilots are incompetent.
Pubbies are non-Goons. Merch are technically pubbies, but I'm using it in the general sense of players that live their entire EvE life in highsec.
'Cause you'll get scanned down and blown up before you can blink, and the available ores aren't much better than in highsec.
'Cause mining is boring, and if you have access to 0.0 space, there are much more interesting things to do than mine. Some people, like myself, roll an alt specifically for mining so it can run in one window while I pay attention to fun stuff happening on my main.
A lot of people are used to games like WoW, where it is possible for one person to hold the entire thing in their head and understand all of it at once. This is simply not possible in EvE, and any attempt to try will just give you a headache. Start playing, join a group of players that aren't all about serious business, and don't worry too much about becoming spacerich.
More to come!
The Hyena and Keres can be good tacklers, I guess. Kitsune is just a wimpier Blackbird, I see no reason to fly it. The Sentinel gets bonuses to neuts, nos, and tracking disruptors (lol, amarr), don't bother with it.
Individual skill plays its biggest role before the fight even begins though. It involves knowing your ship's strengths and building a setup that plays to them. In the field it means awareness of your surroundings, identifying any threats or killable targets, recognizing a trap when you see one, and having an escape strategy if things turn to shit. Eventually you develop that little voice in your head that tells you when engaging someone is a bad idea.
EDIT: Are the Covert Ops (Buzzard, Manticore) ships any good? They sound really, really cool on paper and I've played a stealth-type character in every MMO I've ever played since Ultima Online, so I'm sort of drawn to that.
stealth bombers can be fun, but are really quite useless.
Can you target things? Scan things?
Also is there any reason to fly a regular Cov. Ops frigate over a Cov. Ops bomber for recon-type scenarios, aside from the fact it's slightly faster?
The Blackbird is arguably the best EW cruiser in the game.
Covops ships are something you do in addition to whatever, not as a main part of the game. Usually for stealthy stuff people train to use force recon.
You can avoid dying, which is very useful. Covops ships may warp when cloaked. All good fleets have a covops or two for spying on enemy fleets and scouting. You can't target, scan, activate modules, or anything else though.
Pretty sure bombers can't fit a covops cloak, meaning that you can't warp while cloaked.
you mean the boot.ini deletion thing? it was fixed in less than a day.
and it's deletion didn't break xp computers, boot.ini isn't really even needed unless your using the windows bootloader, or have some odd config. 99% of people could have it deleted and never notice.
they can't.
Bombers are a frigate that can mount cruise launchers (a bs class missile), and a bomb launcher. they look nice on paper but in practice are generally useless.
because they can't warp cloaked, getting in on a target without being noticed is impossible, unless your already sitting around waiting. They don't have enough alpha damage (alpha is the amount of damage you do per volley of all your weapons) to kill anything larger than a frigate. there made of paper so if you get in close and try and tackle while you kill you will be ripped apart. and as for bombs themselves there still too expensive to use(I think about 5m a bomb last I checked), and just don't do enough damage to bother anyway.
really there just a ship that for any role theres something better to use.
If you want to be the sneaky cloaked type of person, who can get actual solo kills, look at force recons.
Good to know. I dont see why they wouldnt have fixed it, but I just wanted to make sure. I am thinking about doing the trial again this summer.
HAHAHAHAHAHA WHAT
That's like saying your car doesn't need wheels, unless you want to drive it.
The main reason to fly a covops is because of its ability to probe out hostile ships due to its bonus using probes. That 15 to 25 % bonus or whatever depending on your skills is huge when you're trying to get a warpin on a hostile that's jumping around safespots, catching an idling hostile, or catching someone that's logged off and you're trying to gank them before they disappear. (I say "you" but really you're just going to be providing a warpin point for the rest of the gang to kill them, unless you want to take in your meager dps of a light drone and a small gun or something)
And as for things to do, there's a lot of things that aren't documented intentionally to let players figure out for themselves. I do a bit of gas cloud mining, which was a right pain in the ass to figure out because no one wants to tell you anything, and it's a fairly big investment to get into. I now have the entire setup for cooking off my own e-meth, but getting to that point was a lot of research and trial/error. Mining with COSMO or whatever, and scanning down encounters for hacking or archeology is also surprisingly rewarding.
I mean I love twitch fps games like css, 2142, bf2, cod, whatever, so I wouldn't have thought that launching a probe from my ___ and waiting for the bar to count down, warping to the result and repeating it up to 10 times trying to find an elusive site, is surprisingly satisfying. Plus making hundreds of millions for minimal effort is something I like too.
As for pvp skill, it depends. I lag like shit at the worst possible times. I lost my deimos [expensive t2 heavy assault cruiser] jumping into a fight, and all I got to do by the time the damn game loaded grid was watch it go down by the last half bar of structure then explode. Skill at maneuvering when you're in smaller ships does factor in, and there are different ways you can try to outmaneuver your opponent to land hits.
Are all cov-ops ships able to mount cynosural field generators (these are what make the warp points?), or is it just a specific kind (the cruiser-class ones, maybe)?
you don't need anything to make a warp-in, you can warp to any fleet member, or the cov-ops gang-warps(and than aborts for himself) onto the probe results.
cyno's can be mounted on any ship and are what capitals (carriers,Dreads,Motherships,Titans,Rorqual,Jump Freighter) use to move around, they jump from wherever they are to a cyno or cyno-beacon on a pos as they can't use normal gates.
but cov-ops don't probe all that often even, mostly they sit cloaked a distance away from gates, enemy pos's, or wherever the enemy fleet is and relay that info back to the fleet commander.
I've got all my learning skills taken care of now, I can blitz through all of the Astrometrics stuff in about three days, so I'll probably do that for the heck of it ... it'll take the better part of a whole week to get Cloaking up to IV, and then with the skills I already have I'll be pretty much done skilling up for CovOps/StealthBomber.
Probably going to get back to the basics after that, blitz through EW skills and then improve on my nuts and bolts stuff like some extra ranks in Navigation. I figure I'll reapp for Merch about the same time.
Thanks again for all the info!
I was in a few corps. Had a stint in something before moving to Stain. Left the game after a good year and a half. Alliances had kill boards. When you PvP it's often a competition against your alliance/corp mates to try and get the most enemy kills. It builds up the drama because you can often mosey to another alliance's kill boards (bragging rights so why not post it?). This gives you an idea of who "hot targets" are. EvE is vast, and there's nothing like getting the killing blow on their #1 guy or taking him out in a small group/1v1 hunt.
There's also a lot of smack talk that goes on the EvE boards. Lots of neat advertising and videos. The community really thrives. There used to be real life events that players could apply to help GM. I never got into one of those. They were kind of infrequent. The website posts lots of news about NPC empires etc. and I think thats what they run these events on. If you want in on that type of play, it's available and there are those dedicated to it.
99.9% of the people are looking to claim their own space...or merc for isk and the thrill of the kill. It's created a solid "community". Maybe it's not a helpful one but you'll get "old timers" telling you about epic battles and some of the crazy stuff they've seen.

Other than that, just keep playing and training up those learning skills. The adage is that player skills are more important than character skill points, but if you can't fit a module you're still SOL.
I heard a story one time that some russian players flew out to some uncharted region for like 4 months and then came back all super powerful and started taking over the known space. Did that actually happen?
A group flying off to nowhere returning super powerful? No, not unless they reached the magical land of tinfoil hats (and suits too).
Of course you have to make allowances for some things in EVE. A modern space shuttle on your average space mission orbits the earth at a speed faster than the top speed of a full T2 fit inty (without rigs or implants). The average interceptor also has a mass of around 10x greater than the space shuttle..
Ships do not behave in Space like they would inSpace. That is ok though. EVE is a game and it would be pretty damn boring to play NASA space combat simulator.
